HAYATI Journal of Biosciences , 2011,
Abstract: Human brain posseses the ability to create a concept to assist the process of grouping individual object or events into different classes or categories. We call this grouping process as categorization. In addition to humans, the ability to categorize has also been proposed for animals. Being able to identify, visually or otherwise, a new object as a member of a category is an advantage for animals. Present experiment aims to test the categorization ability in discriminating species by Macaca fascicularis. Using match-to-sample task with photographs of monkeys and human as stimuli, we tested whether monkeys able to categorize monkey individuals as a class against human individuals as another class. We found that monkeys categorized humans differently from monkeys. The monkeys used physical characteristic such as shape and colors from the photographs to create different concepts of human and monkeys.

Dimensi : Journal of Architecture and Built Environment , 2003,
Abstract: The peacefulness of Candra Naya ancient building has lately begun to be disturbed again because of many kinds of polemics on printed and electronic media as well as on millis. This happens because there is a present decision made by the owner, namely PT Bumi Perkasa Permai to Indonesian Chinese Fund. It happens that at present this Fund wants to build Indonesian Chinese Museum at TMII (Mini Beautiful Indonesian Park) and that Fund makes a request that it is allowed to move the Candra Naya building to TMII so that it can be a part of the Museum building. This writing is meant to give information on the process side of field observation having been done for years. The nature of this writing is neutral that there is no siding with anyone. And thank you to PT Bumi Perkasa Permai to give me opportunity to research the conservation building. The review includes historical and temporary demolition data. It also does the data of conservation accomplishments which have been done till the crisis era in 1998. After all, however, the activities stop Abstract in Bahasa Indonesia : Kedamaian bangunan kuno Candra Naya akhir-akhir ini terusik oleh adanya polemik, baik dari media cetak maupun elektronik. PENYERTAAN PERAN SERTA MASYARAKAT DALAM PROGRAM REVITALISASI KAWASAN LAWEYAN DI SURAKARTA (Sebuah Strategi Untuk Mewujudkan Pelaksanaan Revitalisasi)
Naniek Widayati
Dimensi : Journal of Architecture and Built Environment , 2000,
Abstract: Revitalisation problem is a complicated problem in its finishing. The process is very often unable to get along with the planned program. This can happen because the dwellers are often not taken to participate in its planning and accomplishing. Laweyan is the revitalitation-try- out area in Surakarta, which take its dwellers directly both in its planning and accomplishing. Without being presumed, Laweyan society/dwellers support this program very much. They want to participate actively in its planning and accomplishing. This fact is very pleasing because the work team/work connection among the Regional Government, the society, those who pay much attention to this revitalitation and who donate can help each other for the accomplishment of this program. Comparison of Wind-Induced Displacement Characteristics of Buildings with Different Lateral Load Resisting Systems  [PDF]
Chinwuba Arum, Akinloye Akinkunmi
Engineering (ENG) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/eng.2011.33028
Abstract: Due to excessive displacements of tall buildings occasioned by lateral loads, lateral load resisting systems are usually provided to curtail the load effect. The resistance may be offered by Frame Action, Shear Walls, or combined Walls and Frames (also known as Dual System). In this study, finite element based software, ETABS, was used to generate and analyse three-dimensional building models for the assessment of the relative effectiveness of the various lateral load resisting systems. Three models were used, one each for the three resisting systems. Each model consisted of three samples representing three different building heights of 45 m, 75 m, and 99 m. Wind Design Spreadsheet complying with the appropriate British Standards was used to compute preliminary wind load coefficients using the wind speed values from the relevant wind isopleth map of Nigeria as primary data. Lateral wind load was then applied at floor levels of each of the building samples. Each building sample was subjected to three-dimensional analysis for the determination of both the lateral displacements of storey tops and interstorey drifts. The results of the work showed that the dual system was the most efficient lateral-load resisting system based on deflection criterion, as they yielded the least values for lateral displacements and inter-storey drifts. The moment frame was the least stiff of the resisting systems, yielding the highest values of both the lateral displacement and the inter-storey drift.
Verification of Properties of Concrete Reinforcement Bars: Nigeria as Case Study
C Arum
African Research Review , 2008,
Abstract: An investigation was conducted into the level of conformance of ribbed steel bars used in Nigeria's structural concrete practice to relevant international and local provisions. In this research, all bars imported into Nigeria from member countries of ISO as well as bars marked with the identity of the local producing mill are classified as steel of recognizable origin. On the other hand, bars imported from ISO non-member countries as well as those without identifying mark of the producing works are classified as steel of non-recognizable origin. The results of the investigation showed that steel of recognizable origin satisfy both local and ISO requirements for strength and ductility. On the other hand, steel of non-recognizable origin failed to satisfy the above requirements for high-yield ribbed bars but satisfies the local specifications if used as mild steel.
Modeling, Behaviour Prediction, and Control – Tripartite Essentials of Contemporary Structural Engineering Education
C Arum
African Research Review , 2008,
Abstract: Computers have today permeated every sphere of human endeavour and structural engineering is no exception. Multiply-hyperstatic structures which relatively recently took teams of structural engineers several months to analyse can now be elegantly analysed in a matter of seconds using computers equipped with readily available and userfriendly analysis/design software. This paper examined the contemporary structural engineer and the shift his education must accommodate in order for his relevance not to diminish in the face of the new realities posed by the computer. The results of the study showed that there should now be an orientation shift in the education of the structural engineer. More time should now be apportioned to learning the intricacies of structural modeling, understanding structural behaviour, and controlling same to achieve the desired design objective. On the other hand, although the classical analysis methods should still be taught, the time allocated to them should now be significantly reduced. Examples were given for quantitative illustration of the issues involved. In conclusion, the paper argued that the above three essentials should form the cornerstone of modern structural engineering education.
Women NGO’s and Women Empowerment in Nigeria
I Arum
African Research Review , 2010,
Abstract: An investigation was carried out into the activities of various women non – governmental organizations (NGO) in Nigeria, as a veritable tool for women empowerment. The results of the research revealed that women NGO’s have ventured into areas that were previously ignored by government such areas include female genital mutilation, women trafficking, widowhood rites, women reproductive health, among others. In other for these NGO’s to be more effective and offer greater benefits in the development of Nigeria and Nigerian women. The study recommended that the NGO’s or government should design programmes between the women in developed countries and those in Nigeria. The research further recommended that customs and taboos averse to women education should be dismantled.
Molecular Detection of Endophytic Bacteria on Plantlet Tissue of Sugarcane
WIWIK EKO WIDAYATI,JOKO WIDADA,JOEDORO SOEDARSONO
HAYATI Journal of Biosciences , 2007,
Abstract: Endophytic bacteria live in plant host tissues without causing any symptoms. The aim of this study was to examine the indigenous endophytic bacteria on sugarcane plantlets produced from the young leaf cells by using tissue culture techniques. To detect the existence of endophytic bacteria in the plantlet tissue, a series of molecular method based on PCR were applied by using ribosomal intergenic spacer (RIS) primer followed by 16S rDNA partial sequence and single strand conformation polymorphism (SCCP). The results showed that the molecular method could detect the existence of bacteria in the tissues. Using the same methods, the bacteria were also found in other developmental stages of sugarcane (explants, differentiated tissues and callus).
