Abstract: two local varieties of roselle (hibiscus sabdariffa l.), jamaican green and jamaican red, were grown to determine the amount of natural cross-pollination. two planting arrangements (alternating rows; alternating individuals in a row) and two planting dates, a month apart, were used for the outcrossing experiments. stem pigmentation, red (r-) vs. green (rr), was used as a genetic marker in the estimation of outcrossing. homozygous dominant and recessive genotypes of jamaican red and jamaican green, respectively, were grown in both of the planting arrangements and dates. seeds from open-pollinated capsules of randomly selected jamaican green plants were planted to score the frequency of cross-pollination. estimates of natural cross-pollination ranged from 0.20 ± 0.09% to 0.68 ± 0.34%. roselle outcrosses at a low rate in jamaica.

Abstract: The present study was aimed to investigate the antioxidant activity of extracts of dried root powder of Capparis grandiflora Wall ex.Hook.f & Thomson. (Capparidaceae). In evaluation, methanol extract of the root powder was prepared and screened for in-vitro antioxidant activities by 1, 1-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity and by reducing power assay method. The results of both the methods were compared with a natural antioxidant ascorbic acid (vitamin C) as a standard. . In DPPH free radical scavenging assay, IC50 values of methanol root extract and Ascorbic acid was found to be 50.1μg and 22.0 μg/ml respectively. The results concluded that the extract has potential source of antioxidants of natural origin.

Abstract: DNA microarrays allow biologist to measure the expression of thousands of genessimultaneously on a small chip. These microarrays generate huge amount of data and newmethods are needed to analyse them. In this paper, a new classification method based onsupport vector machine is proposed. The proposed method is used to classify geneexpression data recorded on DNA microarrays. The proposed method is tested by usingbenchmark datasets and it is found that the proposed method is faster than neural networkand the classification performance is not less than neural network.
