Structural Properties of length biased Beta distribution of first kind
K.A. Mir
American Journal of Engineering Research , 2013,
Abstract: In this paper, a new class of Length-biased beta distribution of first kind is introduced. A Lengthbiased beta distribution of first kind is a particular case of the weighted beta distribution of first kind, taking the weights as the variate values has been defined. The characterizing properties of the model are derived. The estimates of parameters of Length-biased beta distribution of first kind are obtained by using method of moments. Also, a test for detecting the length-baisedness is conducted.

Physicochemical Attributes of Nigerian Natural Honey from Honeybees (Apis mellifera adansonii) (Hymenoptera: Apidae) and its Shelf Life in Storage at Room Temperature

Pakistan Journal of Biological Sciences , 2012,
Abstract: Nigerian honey competes globally in the world honey market. The physicochemical parameters of honey samples sourced from colonies of Apis mellifera adansonii were studied with the effect of storage-time over a period of two years. This was done by analyzing and evaluating eleven common physicochemical parameters including colour, moisture content, ash content, sugar content, acidity, pH value, hydroxymethylfurfural, diastase activity, nitrogen content, insoluble matter and viscosity of honey samples with the effect of storage-time on the physicochemical parameters using Association of Official Analytical Chemists methods. Most of the honey samples showed proper maturity considering the moisture content (17.9±2.0%). The total acidity (21.5±5.6 meq kg-1) indicated absence of undesirable fermentation after harvest and extraction. The Mean±SD pH value (3.9±0.2) of the honey samples was within acceptable standards of Economic European Community (EEC) and Codex. The ash content (0.4±0.2%) (0.2-0.6%) was slightly higher than 0-0.50% of EEC and Codex standards. The fructose and glucose mean values were 38.9±0.8% and 28.3±2.4%, respectively. The Mean±S.D value of hydroxymethylfurfural content (8.5±2.7 mg kg-1) was low, while the Mean±SD value of diastase activity was high depicting freshness. The evaluated physicochemical parameters of two years old honey samples exhibited no significant deviation (p>0.05) from that of the fresh samples. This study showed that natural honey if properly harvested, extracted hygienically, preserved and stored can maintain their stability relatively for at least two years at room temperature without undue interference.

Body Mass and Conformation Traits in Four Breeds of Guinea Fowl
K.A. Kozaczynski
Pakistan Journal of Biological Sciences , 1998,
Abstract: The records for body mass at one day, one, four, twelve, sixteen, twenty, twenty four weeks of age and conformation traits (Shank length, shank diameter, keel length, breast angle) at four, twelve, sixteen, twenty, and twenty four weeks of age were collected from 114 guinea fowl. There were highly significant differences in body mass between breeds and a significant difference between sexes from 4 weeks of age up to 20 weeks of age. At 24 weeks of age the difference in body mass was significant for breeds but not significant for sex. All the conformation trait measurements were higher for males than for females. A steady increase in shank length, shank diameter and keel length was observed from the 4th to the 20th week of age in all the breeds and sexes. During the study greater average breast measurement angles were recorded for females than males.

Screening of the Insecticidal Activity of New Recombinant Preparations of Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki Against the Egyptian Cotton Leafworm
Zaied K.A.
Pakistan Journal of Biological Sciences , 2000,
Abstract: In the present work, two cultures of Bacillus strains belonging to two serotypes and four of their transconjugants were screened with respect to their activities against lepidopterous cotton pest. Two strains of Bacillus were screened for their drug resistance to be used as a genetic markers to identify bacterial strains in the conjugation process. B. subtilis was found to be sensitive to all antibiotics and drugs, and also resistant to crystal violet. Although, B. thuringiensis was found to be sensitive to all antibiotics, drugs and crystal violt, except for it was resistant to hiconcil. Bacterial transconjugants isolated from conjugation between both strains were more resistant to both crystal violet and hiconcil. Two groups of crystals and spores have been isolated within Bacillus strains and their transconjugants. This because -endotoxin gene of B. thuringiensis codes for the insecticidal crystal protein (ICP) specific for lepidopteran insects, since the N-terminal half of the toxin is sufficient both for insect specificity and toxicity. The potency of two Bacillus preparation was determined against Spodoptera littoralis. The toxicities of these two groups against larvae of Spodoptera littoralis expressed as; average consumption of fed leaves, average weight of surviving larvae, survival percent of the larvae and mortality percentage are also differed. Mortality levels of larvae caused by the different isolates varied from 20.83 to 79.17 (crystals alone) and from 58.33 to 83.33 (crystal and spores). Higher levels of mortality were observed if a mixture of relatively pure crystals and spores was used compared with the mortality resulting from either fraction of crystal alone. -endotoxin recombinant crystalline protein and endospores from bacterial transconjugants were highly toxic effective against S. littoralis than from their parental strains.
The methodology of corona air ionizer usage when correcting the indoor air ion composition
K.A. Chernyy
Magazine of Civil Engineering , 2012,
Abstract: There is a need of the solution of two inconsistent tasks connected with features of technical characteristics assignment when using electrical corona air ionizers for correction of air ion composition. On the one hand, for providing sufficient generating ability of the air ionizer the increasing of corona voltage is necessary. On the other hand, increase of the corona voltage leads to increasing in generation of concomitant harmful chemical compounds. Results of research of small air ion concentration and volume concentration of ozone O3, nitrogen oxide NO and nitrogen oxides (in terms of NO2) are presented. The received empirical dependences allow to carry out calculating of change of foregoing above characteristics for formed air ion composition.
