Electronic Structures of MgB{$_2$} under Uniaxial and Hydrostatic Compression

Abstract: Electronic and lattice properties of MgB{$_2$} under uniaxial and hydrostatic compression are calculated. Lattice properties are optimized automatically by using the first-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) method. Features of the electronic band structures under uniaxial and hydrostatic compression are quite different each other.

Methods: We analyzed the probability relationship between grade of upper and lower tooth decay for men and women using the two new models, and tested goodness-of-fit for the models. Results: The probability that a woman's (man's) grade of lower tooth decay is i (i = 1,2) and her (his) grade of upper tooth decay is j(>i), (j = 2,3) is estimated to be at most 13.52 (10.23) times higher than the probability that the woman's (man's) grade of upper tooth decay is i and grade of lower tooth decay is j. Conclusion: From the data on tooth decay, decay of the upper teeth is worse than of the lower teeth in women and men, and the tendency becomes stronger as the numbers of decayed upper and lower teeth increase.

Abstract: Quantum analysis is made on the dynamical system consisting of the cosmic axions, photons and Rydberg atoms which are interacting in the resonant cavity. The atomic motion in a continuous incident beam is taken into account properly in order to make a precise estimate of the efficiency of the Rydberg atom cavity detector for dark matter axion search.

Abstract: the purpose of this paper is the study of fuzzy control applied to a dynamic positioning system (dps) of semi-submersible platforms. a numerical simulator program in time domain was coded using mathematical models of the floating platform dynamics and the external forces (wind, current, wave and thruster) that act on the platform. subsequently, a fuzzy controller applied to dps was developed. the fuzzy controller and the proportional-integral-derivative (pid) controller were then subjected to the same environmental conditions in order to compare their performance.
Therapeutic results of acromioclavicular joint dislocation complicated by rotator cuff tear.

Abstract: PURPOSE. To evaluate the operative findings and postoperative results of one-stage repair on patients with acromioclavicular joint dislocation complicated by rotator cuff tear. METHODS. Between 1992 and 1999, one-stage repair was performed on 5 patients with acromioclavicular joint dislocation complicated by rotator cuff tears. Modified Cadenat procedure for acromioclavicular joint dislocation, and McLaughlin procedure for rotator cuff tear, were performed on these patients. Postoperative results at the final examination were assessed according to the criteria for therapeutic effects on shoulder joint disorders of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association. RESULTS. There was partial-thickness cuff tear in one patient, and full-thickness cuff tear in the remaining 4 patients. In all patients, tears were located only in the supraspinatus tendon, and were medium or small ones with maximal diameter of 3 cm or less. After a mean follow-up period of 56 months (range, 36-79 months), all patients were assessed to have excellent results. No patient showed a good reduction of the acromio-clavicular joint. CONCLUSION. For patients successfully treated by one-stage repair, satisfactory results were obtained without pain or disturbance in activities of daily living.
Improved search for $ν_μ\to ν_e$ oscillation in a long-baseline accelerator experiment

Abstract: We performed an improved search for $\nu_\mu \to \nu_e$ oscillation with the KEK to Kamioka (K2K) long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, using the full data sample of $9.2 \times 10^{19}$\xspace protons on target. No evidence for a $\nu_e$ appearance signal was found, and we set bounds on the $\nu_\mu \to \nu_e$ oscillation parameters. At $\Delta m^2$ = $2.8 \times 10^{-3} \mathrm{eV}^2$, the best fit value of the K2K $\nu_\mu$ disappearance analysis, we set an upper limit of $\sin^2 2\theta_{\mu e}$ $<$ 0.13 at 90% confidence level.

Simultaneous ionospheric and magnetospheric observations of azimuthally propagating transient features during substorms

Abstract: During the 6th August 1995, the CUTLASS Finland HF radar ran in a high time resolution mode, allowing measurements of line-of-sight convection velocities along a single beam with a temporal resolution of 14 s. Data from such scans, during the substorm expansion phase, revealed pulses of equatorward flow exceeding ~600 m s–1 with a duration of ~5 min and a repetition period of ~8 min. Each pulse of enhanced equatorward flow was preceded by an interval of suppressed flow and enhanced ionospheric Hall conductance. These transient features, which propagate eastwards away from local midnight, have been interpreted as ionospheric current vortices associated with field-aligned current pairs. The present study reveals that these ionospheric convection features appear to have an accompanying signature in the magnetosphere, comprising a dawnward perturbation and dipolarisation of the magnetic field and dawnward plasma flow, measured in the geomagnetic tail by the Geotail spacecraft, located at L = 10 and some four hours to the east, in the postmidnight sector. These signatures are suggested to be the consequence of the observation of the same field aligned currents in the magnetosphere. Their possible relationship with bursty Earthward plasma flow and magnetotail reconnection is discussed. Key words.
