Gorgiasza meontologia vs. nihilizm
Seweryn BLANDZI
Argument : Biannual Philosophical Journal , 2012,
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to challenge Gorgias’s image of being a ‘nihilist existentialist’. Theoriginal thesis ouden estin, too frequently rendered as ‘nothing exists’, thus reducing the verb ‘tobe’ to denote ‘bare’ existence, and ouden to denote ‘nothingness’. On close inspection it turnsout that in Gorgias neither do we have a negation of reality nor an affirmative treatment ofthe word ‘nothingness’. Therefore, ouden should not be understood as a negation of all realityor a kind of affirmative ‘nothingness’, whereas estin should not be reduced to ‘bare’ existence.(When existence is negated, we obtain annihilation). Such practices still affect the varioustranslations of Gorgias’s treaty On the non-being or on Nature. Gorgias’s ‘sophist’ thought istypically interpreted as a joke or a parody of the dialectical thinking of the Eleatics. In fact, asit turns out, he made no parody of the dialectic but applied the elenctic, apagogic method inZeno’s masterly manner. He did so not for an artificial purpose but to prove the absurdity of thehypothesis of an absolute, transcendent (hence incognizable) one Truth-Being, which eliminatesthe non-being of becoming as an absolute non-being. Gorgias argued in earnest in favourof a relative being as such, Becoming like the only reality, which from the point of view of anabsolute being is after all a non-being, but not-this-being, or relative non-being but not a nonrelativenon-being, as the Eleatics had claimed. Gorgias’s positions appears to be an apologiaof non-being which is that of Becoming. We do not transform the ‘nothing’ into a ‘no thing’.The main question of the treaty is: what is predicated by the word ‘nothing’? Gorgias’s positioncan be recapitulated as nothing is sc. true, there is no criterion because, after all, everythingis opinion. It is reinforced further by Gorgias’s meontological, i.e. anti-eleatic emphasis: ‘Nothing is Being (substance)’, because everything is Becoming. Thus the title of Gorgias’s treatycan thus be seen as an antithesis to that of Melissos’s, which – in our opinion – is to emphasizethe ‘non-beingness’ of nature, the non-substantiality of things. Therefore, if Gorgias’s text waspolemical, and it questioned (while at the same time maintaining the positivity of Becoming asnon-being) only the immutability of things, and thus we cannot speak of the existence or thecognizability of natures or of the essences of things. In sum, the reasoning of Zeno and Melissoswas of a kind that is apt to cut both ways, and that is what Gorgias showed. The argument givenas peculiar to himself was to this

Camilo Botero,Seweryn Zielinski
Anuario Turismo y Sociedad , 2010,

Abstract: the tourism development in small destinations is more sensitive than in the case of larger ones, thus it is necessary to have an early warning tool to inform about the conditions that can accelerate the destination's decline. the butler's tourism area life cycle model - talc defines the development stage of a destination, although numerous studies have established that new variables should be included, which difficult its quick application. the objective of this research was to establish residents' perception ranges for small tourist destinations, in order to facilitate the determination of the exact stage of development and foresee the destination's decline. the methodology consisted of determination of the level of tourism development, based on the talc model, and through the community's perceptions of the tourism development. the results of the application of the talc model demonstrate that the research area is in the mid-development stage. the main conclusion of the research is that the community's perception study is an easier and more effective tool to determine the development level of a small tourism destination than the talc model, while it is also useful as an early warning sign for a destination's decline.
An impact of the electrical pumping scheme on some VCSEL performance characteristics

Optica Applicata , 2009,
Abstract: A comprehensive theoretical model of an operation of vertical-cavity surface-emitting diode lasers (VCSELs) is used to compare anticipated room-temperature (RT) continuous-wave (CW) performance of three modern VCSEL designs: the MESA VCSEL with the upper ring contact on the upper p-side DBR structure and the bottom broad-area contact as well as the single and the double intra-cavity contacted VCSELs. The MESA VCSEL has been found to demonstrate the best mode selectivity because its desired single fundamental mode operation is expected even for the largest 20-μm diameter devices. However its RT CW lasing thresholds are by about 30% higher than those for both intra-cavity contacted VCSELs because of increasing free-carrier absorption and heat generation. Therefore large-size MESA VCSELs cannot operate at higher temperatures and/or for higher operation currents. On the contrary, although both intra-cavity contacted VCSELs ensure single-fundamental-mode operation for smaller devices only, they seem to operate properly also at higher temperatures and operation currents. Therefore, with an exception of some special applications, intra-cavity contacted VCSELs currently seem to be the best VCSEL designs.

Model for Diversity Analysis of Antigen Receptor Repertoires
Grzegorz A. Rempala,Michal Seweryn,Leszek Ignatowicz
Quantitative Biology , 2010,
Abstract: In most of the recent immunological literature the differences across antigen receptor populations are examined via non-parametric statistical measures of species overlap and diversity borrowed from ecological studies. While this approach is robust in a wide range of situations, it seems to provide little insight into the underlying clonal size distribution and the overall mechanism differentiating the receptor populations. As a possible alternative, the current paper presents a parametric method which adjusts for the data under-sampling as well as provides a unifying approach to simultaneous comparison of multiple receptor groups by means of the modern statistical tools of unsupervised learning. The parametric model is based on a flexible multivariate Poisson-lognormal distribution and is seen to be a natural generalization of the univariate Poisson-lognormal models used in ecological studies of biodiversity patterns. The procedure for evaluating model's fit is described along with the public domain software developed to perform the necessary diagnostics. The model-driven analysis is seen to compare favorably vis a vis traditional methods when applied to the data from T-cell receptors in transgenic mice populations.

Tourism & Management Studies , 2011,
Abstract: the main purpose of the paper is to identify changes in the meeting industry in krakow. one of the reasons for the changes was the global crisis. an attempt to prove the thesis has been undertaken. research on the meeting industry in krakow was conducted on the basis of a questionnaire addressed to operators of facilities that can organise business events of this type. the respondents were asked about quantitative data connected with the business tourist traffic, but the questions also concerned opinions connected with the development of this market segment. at the beginning of the study, a review of literature devoted to the issues of shaping the demand for business tourism, with special consideration of the impact of the economic crisis on it, was conducted. in the empirical part, research results conducted in krakow in 2008 -2010 were presented. they illustrate the number of mice type events in the city, their structure and seasonality. the sectors of the parties ordering mice type events in the city were listed. the number of participants of the events was analysed, divided into national and international participants. the results of the research conducted in krakow allowed for the ascertainment that the economic crisis affected the changes of the level, and above all, the structure of mice type events organised in the city, which was visible in 2010, therefore with some time delay. fewer events were organised in the city, but they were more numerous in terms of the number of participants. this has an economic and psychological justification, and it can be deduced that the aforementioned changes were induced by the economic crisis.
