Max-Margin Nonparametric Latent Feature Models for Link Prediction

Abstract: We present a max-margin nonparametric latent feature model, which unites the ideas of max-margin learning and Bayesian nonparametrics to discover discriminative latent features for link prediction and automatically infer the unknown latent social dimension. By minimizing a hinge-loss using the linear expectation operator, we can perform posterior inference efficiently without dealing with a highly nonlinear link likelihood function; by using a fully-Bayesian formulation, we can avoid tuning regularization constants. Experimental results on real datasets appear to demonstrate the benefits inherited from max-margin learning and fully-Bayesian nonparametric inference.
A Cellular-Assisted Efficient Handover Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks  [PDF]

Abstract: Heterogeneous network convergence and handover have become very hot in recent years. This paper proposed an efficient handover scheme in Multi-PAN Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). A number of edge nodes are set at the edge of each Personal Area Networks (PANs). A user equipment (UE), which has WSN and cellular network interface, acts as sensor node or mobile cluster head in WSN area. Thus, edge early warning can be acquired from edge nodes and neighbor channel information can be acquired with BS-assistance. Simulation results show that low transmission interrupted delay and low energy consumption can be achieved compared with conventional scheme in WSN.
Nurse Staff Allocation in a Multi-stage Queuing System with Patients’ Feedback Flow for an Outpatient Department  [PDF]

A general multi-stage queuing system model with patients’ feedback flow is developed to address the behavior of patients’ flow in an Outpatient Department (OD) in a hospital. The whole process includes registration, diagnosis, chemical examination, payment, and medicine-taking. Focusing on nurse resources, the formulas of performance indicators such as patient waiting times and nurse idle times are derived by using the system parameters. A mathematical programming model is developed to determine how many nurses should be allocated to each stage to minimize the total costs of patient waiting times and nurse idle times. The neighborhood search combined Simulated Annealing (NS-SA) is developed to solve the model, which is essentially a natural number decomposition problem. Numerical experiments are conducted to analyze the discipline of nurse allocation and the impact of patient arrival rates and the probability of patient’s feedback flow on the system costs. The research results will be helpful for hospital managers to make decisions on allocation of nurse staff in practice.

The effects of comprehensive nursing interventions on sexual functions in young and middle-aged patients with coronary stent implantation  [PDF]

Abstract: Objective: To study the effects of comprehensive nursing interventions on sexual functions in young and middle-aged patients with coronary stent implantation. Methods: 96 cases of coronary stent implantation were randomly divided into control group and intervention group (experimental group) with each group of 48 cases. The control group received the routine nursing measures after the coronary stent implantation and the experimental group was treated by the comprehensive nursing interventions such as psychological nursing, education of sexual knowledge, playing the full enthusiasm of spouse and appropriate exercise therapy on basis of the routine nursing measures. The two groups were given the questionnaire of brief male sexual function questionnaire (BSFI), Chinese patients with premature ejaculation sexual function score (C-ISFPE) and the international index of erectile function (IIEF-5). The scores of BSFI, C-ISFPE and IIEF-5 were compared between the two groups. Results: There were 29 cases who were satisfied with sexual life on the whole (≤1), 26 cases with different degrees of premature ejaculation symptoms and 21 cases with erectile dysfunctions, which were respectively 27.08%, 30.2% and 21.87% of the total number. The scores of BSFI, C-ISFPE and IIEF-5 inthe experimental group were significantly increased after the interventions (P < 0.05). The BSFI scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group (P < 0.05) and the C-ISFPE and IIEF-5 scores in the two groups were significantly different (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The comprehensive nursing interventions can effectively improve the sexual functions and enhance the quality of life of young and middle-aged patients with coronary stent implantation.

Separation/Analysis Rhodamine B by Anion Surfactant/Ionic Liquid Aqueous Two-Phase Systems Coupled with Ultraviolet Spectrometry  [PDF]

Abstract: A novel method for the separation/analysis rhodamine B has been described. The ionic liquid (1-tetradecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide)/anion surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate)/NaCl two-phase systems (ATPSs) is presented as a simple, rapid and effective sample pretreatment technique coupled with ultraviolet spectrometry for analysis rhodamine B in soft drink. The effects of parameters on the ATPSs extraction of rhodamine B such as amount of surfactant, ionic liquid and salt, pH, temperature, stabilization and centrifugal time have been studied in details. Under the optimized conditions, the linear range of calibration curve for rhodamine B was 0.05 - 7.0 μg·mL-1 and the detection limit was 3.2 ng·mL-1. The phase equilibrium and the mechanism of phase separation for ATPSs have been discussed. This method has been applied to the determination of rhodamine B in soft drink.

Statistical approaches in QTL mapping and molecular breeding for complex traits

Abstract: Most of the important agronomic traits in crops, such as yield and quality, are complex traits affected by multiple genes with gene × gene interaction as well as gene × environment interaction. Understanding the genetic architecture of complex traits is a long-term task for quantitative geneticists and plant breeders who wish to design efficient breeding programs. Conventionally, the genetic properties of traits can be revealed by partitioning the total variation into variation components caused by specific genetic effects. With recent advances in molecular genotyping and high-throughput technology, the unraveling of the genetic architecture of complex traits by analyzing quantitative trait locus (QTL) has become possible. The improvement of complex traits has also been achieved by pyramiding individual QTL. In this review, we describe some statistical methods for QTL mapping that can be used to analyze QTL × QTL interaction and QTL × environment interaction, and discuss their applications in crop breeding for complex traits.
Modification of gravitational redshift of x-ray burst produced by pulsar surface magnetoplasma

Abstract: In this paper, the propagation of x-ray bursts in the magnetoplasma of pulsar magnetosphere is discussed. The electromagnetic interaction between x-ray bursts and magnetoplasma is described as some geometry. The electromagnetic effects of surface superstrong magnetic field and dynamic effects of outflowing magnetoplasma of pulsars are treated as an optical metric. The Gordon metric is introduced to represent the gravitational metric and optical metric. So the propagation of x-ray bursts in magnetoplasma of pulsars can be described as x-ray bursts transmitting in an effective space characterized by Gordon metric. The modification of gravitational redshift, attributed to the flowing magnetoplasma of pulsars, is obtained and it is shown that the modification is of redshift and can reach the same magnitude as the gravitational redshift for ordinary pulsars.
