A Neural Network MLSE Receiver Based on Natural Gradient Descent: Application to Satellite Communications

Abstract: The paper proposes a maximum likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE) receiver for satellite communications. The satellite channel model is composed of a nonlinear traveling wave tube (TWT) amplifier followed by a multipath propagation channel. The receiver is composed of a neural network channel estimator (NNCE) and a Viterbi detector. The natural gradient (NG) descent is used for training. Computer simulations show that the performance of our receiver is close to the ideal MLSE receiver in which the channel is perfectly known.
Determination of fast electron energy dependence of magic angles in electron energy loss spectroscopy for anisotropic systems

Abstract: We present an accurate determination of the magic angle conditions at which the sample-orientation induced fine structure variation is eliminated in the core-level electron energy loss spectroscopy of anisotropic systems. Our result paves the way for the application of magic angle electron energy loss spectroscopy (MAEELS) in material characterization. It also highlights, for the first time, the importance of the quantum interference effect between longitudinal and transverse interactions for medium energy fast electrons, and its connection with the anisotropy of the electron transition.

Abstract: Online advertising has become a key source of revenue for both web search engines and online publishers. For them, the ability of allocating right ads to right webpages is critical because any mismatched ads would not only harm web users' satisfactions but also lower the ad income. In this paper, we study how online publishers could optimally select ads to maximize their ad incomes over time. The conventional offline, content-based matching between webpages and ads is a fine start but cannot solve the problem completely because good matching does not necessarily lead to good payoff. Moreover, with the limited display impressions, we need to balance the need of selecting ads to learn true ad payoffs (exploration) with that of allocating ads to generate high immediate payoffs based on the current belief (exploitation). In this paper, we address the problem by employing Partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs) and discuss how to utilize the correlation of ads to improve the efficiency of the exploration and increase ad incomes in a long run. Our mathematical derivation shows that the belief states of correlated ads can be naturally updated using a formula similar to collaborative filtering. To test our model, a real world ad dataset from a major search engine is collected and categorized. Experimenting over the data, we provide an analyse of the effect of the underlying parameters, and demonstrate that our algorithms significantly outperform other strong baselines.

Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study is to analyse the clinical characteristics of 32 patients with severe drug-induced hepatitis, reinforce the practice of unique nursing and holistic nursing, improve the therapeutic effect, reduce the patients’ mortality, and increase their quality of life. Methods: We give patients individualized dietary guidance, medication nursing, and psychological care according to the characteristics of severe hepatitis and its complications, using com- prehensive medical treatment and combined signs of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Results: Overall, 22 (68.8%) out of 32 cases were improved, 8 (25.0%) cases died, and 2 (6.2%) cases were discharged of free will. In addition, the average hospital stay was 28.75 days. Conclusion: This study indicates that dietary guidance for the patients with severe drug-induced hepatitis varies with the individual. The result embodies the concept of Traditional Chinese Medicine that different treatment for the same disease and different diet for the same disease. Special nursing enriches the connotation of holistic nursing. Both of them are vital for improving the survival rate and promoting rehabilitation of patients with severe drug-induced hepatitis.
Design of Equal Precision Frequency Meter Based on FPGA  [PDF]

Abstract: To overcome the shortcoming that the traditional frequency measurement method does not meet the requirement of equal precision, a design method of equal precision frequency meter based on FPGA is proposed. The system modules are all realized in Altera’s FPGA chip EP2C35F672C8. Experimental results show that the system can measure frequencies with equal precision in the whole frequency range, and the measurement error is small. It achieves the requirement of equal precision measurements.
