Abstract: Binge drinking and alcohol toxicity are often associated with myocardial dysfunction possibly due to accumulation of the ethanol metabolite acetaldehyde although the underlying mechanism is unknown. This study was designed to examine the impact of accelerated ethanol metabolism on myocardial contractility, mitochondrial function and apoptosis using a murine model of cardiac-specific overexpression of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH).

Abstract: Alcohol abuse is a serious medical and social problem. Although light to moderate alcohol consumption is beneficial to cardiovascular health, heavy drinking often results in organ damage and social problems. In addition, genetic susceptibility to the effect of alcohol on cancer and coronary heart disease differs across the population. A number of mechanisms including direct the toxicity of ethanol, its metabolites [e.g., acetaldehyde and fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs)] and oxidative stress may mediate alcoholic complications. Acetaldehyde, the primary metabolic product of ethanol, is an important candidate toxin in developing alcoholic diseases. Meanwhile, free radicals produced during ethanol metabolism and FAEEs are also important triggers for alcoholic damages.
RORα, a Potential Tumor Suppressor and Therapeutic Target of Breast Cancer

Abstract: The function of the nuclear receptor (NR) in breast cancer progression has been investigated for decades. The majority of the nuclear receptors have well characterized natural ligands, but a few of them are orphan receptors for which no ligand has been identified. RORα, one member of the retinoid orphan nuclear receptor (ROR) subfamily of orphan receptors, regulates various cellular and pathological activities. RORα is commonly down-regulated and/or hypoactivated in breast cancer compared to normal mammary tissue. Expression of RORα suppresses malignant phenotypes in breast cancer cells, in vitro and in vivo. Activity of RORα can be categorized into the canonical and non-canonical nuclear receptor pathways, which in turn regulate various breast cancer cellular function, including cell proliferation, apoptosis and invasion. This information suggests that RORα is a potent tumor suppressor and a potential therapeutic target for breast cancer.

Abstract: Isolated adult cardiac ventricular myocytes have been a useful model for cardiovascular research for more than 20 years. With the recent advances in cellular physiology and transgenic techniques, direct measurement of isolated ventricular myocyte mechanics is becoming an increasingly important technique in cardiac physiology that provides fundamental information on excitation-contraction coupling of the heart, either in drug intervention or pathological states. The goal of this article is to describe the isolation of ventricular myocytes from both rats and mice, and the use of real-time beat-to-beat simultaneous recording of both myocyte contraction and intracellular Ca2+ transient.

Abstract: This paper proposes a novel image mosaic method based on SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) feature of line segment, aiming to resolve incident scaling, rotation, changes in lighting condition, and so on between two images in the panoramic image mosaic process. This method firstly uses Harris corner detection operator to detect key points. Secondly, it constructs directed line segments, describes them with SIFT feature, and matches those directed segments to acquire rough point matching. Finally, Ransac method is used to eliminate wrong pairs in order to accomplish image mosaic. The results from experiment based on four pairs of images show that our method has strong robustness for resolution, lighting, rotation, and scaling. 1. Introduction Recently image mosaic [1–4] has been an important subject in image processing researches. Image mosaic technologies hold extensive potential applications in remote sensing image processing, computer recognition, medical image analysis, artificial intelligence, and other fields. And also there are a number of techniques for capturing panoramic images of real world scenes [5]. Since, in real word application, the input images are taken at varying orientations and exposures, a feature-based registration technique similar to the pieces of literature [2, 6] is used to automatically align the input images. The image matching accuracy will have a direct influence on quality of panoramic image. Currently, there are two types of methods for image matching: one is the grayscale-based method that uses the correlation of grayscale in overlapping regions of two images to obtain optimal matching through correlation maximizing. The grayscale-based method is easy to implement, but it is relatively sensitive to grayscale changes in images, especially under variable lighting. The other matching methods based on image features use image pixel values to extract features. Because these features are partially invariant to lighting changes, matching ambiguity would be excellently resolved in the process of image matching. As for the extraction of image feature points, there already have been many proved methods, for example, Harris method [3], Susan method [7], and Shi-Tomasi method [8]. This feature-based image mosaic method has two main advantages as follows: (1) the computation complexity of image matching will be significantly reduced for the reason that the image feature points are far less than pixels; (2) the feature points have strong robustness for unbalance lighting and noises; as a result, the quality of image mosaic

Abstract: This paper explores the optimal licensing contract, in which the manufacture firm holds the equity of the retail firm and licenses the cost-reducing innovation to the vertically integrated firm. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of the retail firm’s equity on the manufacture firm’s licensing decisions. The paper shows that the manufacture firm prefers royalty (fixed-fee) licensing when the manufacture firm holds large (small) equity of the retail firm.

Abstract: The Dicke subradiance and superradiance resulting from the interaction between surface plasmons of a nanosphere and an ensemble of quantum emitters have been investigated using a Green function approach. Based on such an investigation, we propose a scheme for a deterministic multiqubit quantum phase gate. As an example, twoqubit, threequbit, and fourqubit quantum phase gates have been designed and analyzed in detail. Phenomena due to the losses in the metal are discussed. Potential applications of these phenomena to quantuminformation processing are anticipated.
