In seeds harvested by farmers, the influence on the timing of the diameters of stems was studied in common and reciprocal grafts using chilies, jalape o, chilaca and Cayenne as grafts and, landrace Morelos CM-334 as the rootstock. CM 334's stem diameter showed high compatibility with jalape o and chilaca, and was very distant with Cayenne. Abundant callus formation between the unions of the tested grafts showed good aptitude and affinity which allowed the firm connection of the vascular cambium. The rates of graft survival were of 90% with chilies, which is within the acceptable range for commercially purposes. Using CM 334 as a rootstock resistant to P. capsici could be part of an integrated control for wilt in these types of commercial chilies. The reciprocal graft can be used to study genes associated with regulatory processes of signais able to move from the roots to the sprout, such as branching, flowering, systemic resistance and abiotic stress responses.

Abstract: objective: to characterize tobacco use according to level of poverty in a random, nationally representative sample of adolescents (10 to 21 years old), living in urban areas with less than 50 000 inhabitants. the study was done in 2001 as part of the baseline assessment of the evaluation of the governmental program, oportunidades. material and methods: a questionnaire was applied to 29 548 adolescents living in 30 000 selected households and it included specific questions on individual tobacco use among other questions. results: the prevalence of smokers was 3.5% (95% ci: 3.3%-3.7%) and experimenters 9.9% (95% ci: 9.6%-10.2%). a logistic regression model for clustered data was constructed in order to evaluate the associated factors that distinguish a smoker from an experimenter. after adjusting for level of poverty of the household and use of alcohol and drugs, a significant association (or = 1.5, p <0.01) was found with having a paid job and a differential association was found between gender and age group. conclusions: the results of this study suggest that the additional availability of money that an adolescent has, could increase the prevalence of tobacco smoking and that the program oportunidades should include prevention campaigns directed specifically at this population group.

DESPOBLACIóN Y ENVEJECIMIENTO: GALICIA HACIA EL A O 2020

Reduced Dynamic Models in Epithelial Transport

Journal of Biophysics , 2013, DOI: 10.1155/2013/654543
Abstract: Most models developed to represent transport across epithelia assume that the cell interior constitutes a homogeneous compartment, characterized by a single concentration value of the transported species. This conception differs significantly from the current view, in which the cellular compartment is regarded as a highly crowded media of marked structural heterogeneity. Can the finding of relatively simple dynamic properties of transport processes in epithelia be compatible with this complex structural conception of the cell interior? The purpose of this work is to contribute with one simple theoretical approach to answer this question. For this, the techniques of model reduction are utilized to obtain a two-state reduced model from more complex linear models of transcellular transport with a larger number of intermediate states. In these complex models, each state corresponds to the solute concentration in an intermediate intracellular compartment. In addition, the numerical studies reveal that it is possible to approximate a general two-state model under conditions where strict reduction of the complex models cannot be performed. These results contribute with arguments to reconcile the current conception of the cell interior as a highly complex medium with the finding of relatively simple dynamic properties of transport across epithelial cells. 1. Introduction The transport of water and solutes across epithelia is a relevant physiological property of higher organisms. To perform transport, epithelial cells develop a polarized distribution of membrane molecules, which localize at distinct apical and basolateral domains of the plasma membrane [1, 2]. The analysis and interpretation of quantitative data about solute and water transport across epithelia have constituted a major objective of cell physiologists. The majority of the models classically developed to represent solute transport across epithelia have considered that the interior of the epithelial cells constitutes a well-stirred, homogeneous compartment, characterized by a single value of concentration of the transported species [3–5]. This view implicitly assumes that the intracellular diffusion coefficient of the species remains constant and that diffusion occurs freely and rapidly, so that the intracellular solute concentrations attain a single equilibrium value at a faster time scale than the overall process. This conception differs markedly from the current view about the structural and functional characteristics of the cell interior. In this conception, the intracellular compartment is
