Abstract: the objective of this work is to develop a genetic improvement program for guava (psidium guajava l.) in cuba, which may contribute to a more efficient use of its genetics resources. it begins with the establishment of the collection, taking into account the prospection of native genotypes, as well as the introduction of wild relatives and accessions with a diverse geographical origin from the main producer countries. these activities are vital for the posterior collection enrichment and maintenance, as well as the different sexual and asexual propagation procedures, which guarantee material multiplication and allow to create new variability sources. once established, characterization can proceed. for this, a group of minimum descriptors that can be useful to homogenize such studies to an international level and for cultivar catalogues confection are referred to, the latter of great demand from producers and specialists. for a rational germplasm management it is necessary to know the existent variability. in this sense, highly discriminative morphological characters, as well as aflp and ssr molecular markers, are recommended, whose combination allows to identify accessions and to form diversity groups, not only in guava but also in other myrtaceae members. all this integral analysis guarantees a more efficient selection process of promissory genotypes for different purposes (breeding, conservation and commercialization). from them, crosses that can serve to evaluate hybrids with desirable commercial characteristics are recommended, as well as the development of a genetic linkage map and qtls association, as the a step towards a future marker-assisted selection implementation. the role of tissue culture is also stressed, as an alternative conservation method and for guava improvement, considering the main results obtained in the country.

Control comunitario de las infecciones endémicas: pensando los haceres sanitarios colectivos de los campesinos de los Andes peruanos
Wong-Un, Julio Alberto;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1998000600008
Abstract: discussing four rural experiences with leishmaniasis and malaria control in the peruvian andes, this paper analyzes concepts of peripheral health cultures and underlying logic in practical action. peripheral health cultures in this case refer to the planning, organizing, and intervention abilities used to cope with relevant local health problems. the logic of practical action refers to the constant creation of specific action modes, different from those of other groups. in conclusion, this paper suggests the transformation of official disease control programs by incorporating such forms of logic, characterized by solidarity, inclusion, and cultural appropriateness.

Convergent flow in a two-layer system and mountain building

Physics , 2009, DOI: 10.1063/1.3431740
Abstract: With the purpose of modelling the process of mountain building, we investigate the evolution of the ridge produced by the convergent motion of a system consisting of two layers of liquids that differ in density and viscosity to simulate the crust and the upper mantle that form a lithospheric plate. We assume that the motion is driven by basal traction. Assuming isostasy, we derive a nonlinear differential equation for the evolution of the thickness of the crust. We solve this equation numerically to obtain the profile of the range. We find an approximate self-similar solution that describes reasonably well the process and predicts simple scaling laws for the height and width of the range as well as the shape of the transversal profile. We compare the theoretical results with the profiles of real mountain belts and find and excellent agreement.
Synthesis and Characterization of Alumina-Zirconia Powders Obtained by Sol-Gel Method: Effect of Solvent and Water Addition Rate  [PDF]

Materials Sciences and Applications (MSA) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/msa.2012.39095
Abstract: The influence of solvent and the rate of addition of water on the characteristics of alumina-zirconia powders obtained by sol-gel method were investigated. The Al2O3-ZrO2 powders (1:1 molar ratio) were prepared using aluminum tri-sec-butoxide and zirconium n-propoxide as precursors. Ethanol (EtOH), isopropanol (iPrOH) and isobutanol (iBuOH) were used as solvents. The Al2O3-ZrO2 powders were characterized by nitrogen physisorption (SBET), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Prepared oxides calcined at 700℃ showed high specific surface area (200 - 240 m2/g). Obtained results suggest that the homogeneity of the mixed oxides is favored by using a water addition rate of 0.06 and 0.10 mL/min with ethanol as solvent.
IgG recognizing 21-24 kDa and 30-33 kDa tachyzoite antigens show maximum avidity maturation during natural and accidental human toxoplasmosis
Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de S?o Paulo , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-46651999000500006
Abstract: we describe the avidity maturation of iggs in human toxoplasmosis using sequential serum samples from accidental and natural infections. in accidental cases, avidity increased continuously throughout infection while naturally infected patients showed a different profile. twenty-five percent of sera from chronic patients having specific igm positive results could be appropriately classified using exclusively the avidity test data. to take advantage of the potentiality of this technique, antigens recognized by igg showing steeper avidity maturation were identified using immunoblot with kscn elution. two clusters of antigens, in the ranges of 21-24 kda and 30-33 kda, were identified as the ones that fulfill the aforementioned avidity characteristics.
