A Natural Seismic Isolating System: The Buried Mangrove Effects
Philippe Gueguen,Mickael Langlais,Pierre Foray,Christophe Rousseau,Julie Maury
Physics , 2011, DOI: 10.1785/0120100129
Abstract: The Belleplaine test site, located in the island of Guadeloupe (French Lesser Antilles) includes a three-accelerometer vertical array, designed for liquefac- tion studies. The seismic response of the soil column at the test site is computed using three methods: the spectral ratio method using the vertical array data, a numerical method using the geotechnical properties of the soil column, and an operative fre- quency domain decomposition (FDD) modal analysis method. The Belleplaine test site is characterized by a mangrove layer overlaid by a stiff sandy deposit. This con- figuration is widely found at the border coast of the Caribbean region, which is exposed to high seismic hazard. We show that the buried mangrove layer plays the role of an isolation system equivalent to those usually employed in earthquake engineering aimed at reducing the seismic shear forces by reducing the internal stress within the structure. In our case, the flexibility of the mangrove layer reduces the distortion and the stress in the sandy upper layer, and consequently reduces the potential of liquefaction of the site.
L’intégration du cinéma hollywoodien en classe de langue : réflexions sur quelques points de convergence disciplinaires Hollywood films in the language class-room : sketching out the objectives common to film studies and English learning

Based on an experience of teaching English to non-specialist students conducted at a French university in humanities, this paper uses some of the theoretical principles laid down by researchers in Content-Based Instruction (CBI) to present an approach devised to facilitate language learning through film. It draws on examples from A History of Violence (Cronenberg 2005) and the Hollywood film noir genre to identify the points of convergence between film studies and English learning. The receptive and productive skills that underpin language acquisition are analogous to those which form the usual steps of film analysis. The argument is that these points of convergence are necessary to achieve true integration between the two subjects.
Detectors for New Neutrino Experiments
Maury Goodman
Physics , 2004,
Abstract: There has been great progress in understanding the neutrino sector in the last few years. One mixing angle has not yet been measured, theta-13. Detectors for the current round of long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, for future long-baseline off-axis detectors, and for two detector experiments at nuclear reactors are reviewed.
New Projects in Underground Physics
Maury Goodman
Physics , 2003,
Abstract: A large fraction of neutrino research is taking place in facilities underground. In this paper, I review the underground facilities for neutrino research. I discuss ideas for future reactor experiments being considered to measure theta_13 and the UNO proton decay project.

Physics , 2002, DOI: 10.1016/S0920-5632(03)01308-2
Abstract: The history and recent progress of atmospheric neutrinos are reviewed. An emphasis is placed on results from experiments other than Super-Kamiokande.
Searching for the Neutrino Mixing Angle Theta-13 at Reactors
Maury Goodman
Physics , 2007,
Abstract: Two neutrino mixing angles have been measured, and much of the neutrino community is turning its attention to the unmeasured mixing angle, $\quq$, whose best limit comes from the reactor neutrino experiment CHOOZ.\cite{bib:chooz} New two detector reactor neutrino experiments are being planned, along with more ambitious accelerator experiments, to measure or further limit $\quq$. Here I will overview how to measure $\quq$ using reactor neutrinos, mention some experiments that were considered and are not going forward, and review the current status of four projects: Double Chooz in France, Daya Bay in China, RENO in South Korea and Angra in Brazil. Finally I will mention how the neutrino observer can gauge progress in these projects two years from now as we approach the times corresponding to early estimates for new results.
The Maximum Detectable Momentum for cosmic ray muons in the MINOS far detector
Maury Goodman
Physics , 2007,
Abstract: A magnetic detector such as MINOS which is measuring the sign of muons has to deal with issues of bending, which depend on the magnetic field configuration, and multiple scattering, which depends on the amount of material which is traversed. Above some momentum which depends on these factors, the momentum cannot be resolved. Issues related to measurement of the muon charge ratio in MINOS are discussed.
Stability of Join the Shortest Queue Networks
Maury Bramson
Mathematics , 2010,
Abstract: Join the shortest queue (JSQ) refers to networks whose incoming jobs are assigned to the shortest queue from among a randomly chosen subset of the queues in the system. After completion of service at the queue, a job leaves the network. We show that, for all non- idling service disciplines and for general interarrival and service time distributions, such networks are stable when they are subcritical. We then obtain uniform bounds on the tails of the marginal distributions of the equilibria for families of such networks; these bounds are employed to show relative compactness of the marginal distributions. We also present a family of subcritical JSQ networks whose workloads in equilibrium are much larger than for the corresponding networks where each incoming job is assigned randomly to a queue. Part of this work generalizes results in Foss and Chernova [12], which applied fluid limits to study networks with the FIFO discipline. Here, we apply an appropriate Lyapunov function.
