The Role of Phytonutrients in Skin Health

Abstract: Photodamage is known to occur in skin with exposure to sunlight, specifically ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Such damage includes inflammation, oxidative stress, breakdown of the extracellular matrix, and development of cancer in the skin. Sun exposure is considered to be one of the most important risk factors for both nonmelanoma and melanoma skin cancers. Many phytonutrients have shown promise as photoprotectants in clinical, animal and cell culture studies. In part, the actions of these phytonutrients are thought to be through their actions as antioxidants. In regard to skin health, phytonutrients of interest include vitamin E, certain flavonoids, and the carotenoids, b-carotene, lycopene and lutein.
Interconnecting Networks of Practice for Professional Learning

Abstract: The article explores the complementary connections between communities of practice and the ways in which individuals orchestrate their engagement with others to further their professional learning. It does so by reporting on part of a research project conducted in New Zealand on teachers’ online professional learning in a university graduate diploma program on ICT education. Evolving from social constructivist pedagogy for online professional development, the research describes how teachers create their own networks of practice as they blend online and offline interactions with fellow learners and workplace colleagues. Teachers’ perspectives of their professional learning activities challenge the way universities design formal online learning communities and highlight the potential for networked learning in the zones and intersections between professional practice and study.The article extends the concepts of Lave and Wenger’s (1991) communities of practice social theory of learning by considering the role participants play in determining their engagement and connections in and across boundaries between online learning communities and professional practice. It provides insights into the applicability of connectivist concepts for developing online pedagogies to promote socially networked learning and for emphasising the role of the learner in defining their learning pathways.
Mechanisms of Fetal Programming in Hypertension

Abstract: Events that occur in the early fetal environment have been linked to long-term health and lifespan consequences in the adult. Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), which may occur as a result of nutrient insufficiency, exposure to hormones, or disruptions in placental structure or function, may induce the fetus to alter its developmental program in order to adapt to the new conditions. IUGR may result in a decrease in the expression of genes that are responsible for nephrogenesis as nutrients are rerouted to the development of more essential organs. Fetal survival under these conditions often results in low birth weight and a deficit in nephron endowment, which are associated with hypertension in adults. Interestingly, male IUGR offspring appear to be more severely affected than females, suggesting that sex hormones may be involved. The processes of fetal programming of hypertension are complex, and we are only beginning to understand the underlying mechanisms.

Introduction Hypertension is a powerful independent risk factor for the development of well-known cardiovascular and cerebrovascular morbidities that include myocardial infarction, stroke, atherosclerosis, and death. It is a prevalent disorder that affects close to a quarter of the adult population worldwide [1]. Although often considered as a late-onset chronic disorder, hypertension is now recognized to afflict the young population, from neonates to adolescents. While the diagnosis of hypertension in adults is based on empirically determined cut-off values for both systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP), the diagnosis of pediatric hypertension is not as straightforward since it is based on normative data [2]. Hypertension in the young is defined as the average systolic or diastolic BP that is ≥95th percentile according to age, sex, and height on three or more occasions [2]. There are no target BP values that indicate high blood pressure in children, since BP changes with age; neonates have low BP that gradually increases with age [3]. The prevalence of pediatric hypertension is estimated at 1-2% [4] and seems to have steadily increased during the past decade, which correlates with the increase in the prevalence of obesity [5]. Abstract: The management of lesions of uncertain malignant potential has become a more common and complex problem in recent years. The introduction of first core biopsy and then vacuum-assisted biopsy devices has led to an increase in the nonoperative diagnosis of such lesions. These lesions may be incidental findings that do not represent the clinical or radiological abnormality.In the past, such lesions were managed by surgical excision (radial scar, papillary lesion and ADH) or by mammographic follow-up (lobular neoplasia). It is now recognised that the upgrade rates to ductal carcinoma in situ or invasive cancer vary in proportion to the degree of cellular atypia present and by the amount of tissue removed at percutaneous biopsy. Vacuum biopsy excision is also an option for some of these lesions.In this session we shall discuss a number of such cases to highlight the difficulties and dilemmas found when managing these lesions.
Effects of Fructooligofructoses Chain Length on the Bifidobacteria of the Human Colon: A Pilot Study  [PDF]

Abstract: Human gastrointestinal health may be improved by the consumption of prebiotic food ingredients such as fructooligo-fructoses. A study was initiated to determine the effect of fructooligofructoses of different chain lengths on gastrointes-tinal parameters. Nineteen healthy subjects aged 20 - 57 y took part in a 10-week cross-over designed study. Subjects consumed either inulin or oligofructose for 3 weeks followed by a 2-week washout period between treatments. Stool samples were collected five times (baseline, 2 treatments, 2 washout) and analyzed for bifidobacteria. Daily records were kept for stool frequency, stool consistency and flatulence frequency. Bifidobacteria counts (cfu/ml) were higher (trending toward significance) during inulin and oligofructose intakes (1.2 × 107 ± 4.8 × 107 and 2.0 × 108 ± 4.7 × 108) and washout periods (2.9 × 106 ± 6.5 × 106 and 1.1 × 107 ± 1.6 × 107) than baseline counts (2.2 × 105 ± 5.1 × 105 and 2.9 × 106 ± 6.5 × 106), respectively. Inulin and oligofructose treatment periods had a significant effect on stool consistency (watery/very hard) and flatulence frequency, but not stool frequency, when compared to baseline (P < 0.05). Further research is needed to confirm these results due to small sample size and the need for a longer washout period between treatments.

Abstract: Concurrent dural and leptomeningeal metastatic carcinomatosis are very rare and have a poor prognosis. Here we present a woman with advanced estrogen receptor (ER) positive and progesterone receptor (PR) positive breast cancer who presented with leptomeningeal disease. Patient underwent multi targeted epigenetic therapies applied in a protocol called MTET. She continued to respond to the interval treatment, which consisted only of the nutraceutical agents. Here we discuss her case in detail and we believe that such an example might be applied to other patients in this situation resulting clinical improvement and less toxicity.

Abstract: Laurel wilt (LW) is a lethal disease of trees in the Lauraceae plant family, including the economic significant commercial crop avocado, Persea americana. To date, an estimated one-half billion native trees have been destroyed by the disease in the southeastern United States, including the loss of significant and diverse taxa in the Everglades. In the US state of Florida, laurel wilt has spread rapidly throughout the South Florida commercial avocado production area. Since its arrival in 2011, LW has been responsible for the death of about 7000 trees or 1% of the production area. Given the destructive nature of this disease, there are major concerns over the future of the Florida avocado industry. Cost-effective management of LW remains an elusive goal, and current recommendations rely heavily on the early detection and destruction of affected trees (sanitation) in an effort to slow the spread of the disease. An empirical economic model is used to determine when all trees in an orchard affected by LW would need to be destroyed due to negative net returns.

Abstract: Young people worldwide are participating in ever-increasing numbers in online fan communities. Far from mere shallow repositories of pop culture, these sites are accumulating significant evidence that sophisticated informal learning is taking place online in novel and unexpected ways. In order to understand and analyze in more detail how learning might be occurring, we conducted an in-depth nine-month ethnographic investigation of online fanfiction communities, including participant observation and fanfiction author interviews. Our observations led to the development of a theory we term distributed mentoring, which we present in detail in this paper. Distributed mentoring exemplifies one instance of how networked technology affords new extensions of behaviors that were previously bounded by time and space. Distributed mentoring holds potential for application beyond the spontaneous mentoring observed in this investigation and may help students receive diverse, thoughtful feedback in formal learning environments as well.
