Audiology Research , 2012, DOI: 10.4081/audiores.2012.e8
Abstract: The aim of the study was to establish the extended high frequency thresholds (EHF) of school-age children with no hearing complaints. The study was conducted on 50 children aged 8 to 12 years with pure tone thresholds (0.5, 1 and 2 kHz) of 15 dB HL or less, with normal speech discrimination and tympanometry and with the presence of contralateral acoustic reflexes of 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz. The children were tested for EHF at frequencies of 9, 10, 11.2, 12.5, 14 and 16 kHz. No significant differences were found between the right and left ear for female and male groups. The results allowed us to group the children into a single sample with mean thresholds (dB) of 8.6 (9 kHz), 6.2 (10 kHz), 8.2 (11.2 kHz), 7.1 (12.5 kHz), 0.4 (14 kHz), and -3.6 (16 kHz). We conclude that, for school-age children, the extended EHF below 15 dBHL could be used as an indication of normal hearing sensitivity.

Ciência e Tecnologia de Alimentos , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-20612003000200029
Abstract: the process of osmotic dehydration was applied in order to reduce the losses post-harvest, to diversify the industrial utilization of the jenipapo (genipa americana l.), and to obtain a product with good organoleptic characteristic and good microbiological stability. the fruits were purchased in the street fair of afogados, a district of recife, in the conditions in which they are sold. they were cut in cubes and submitted to several conditions of processing, through a factorial design 23 to determine the influence of independent variables: temperature, kind of sugar and osmotic agent concentration over moisture loss, sugar uptake and weight reduction. the process was complemented with drying in stove, with forced ventilation at 60oc±5oc for 3h±10', after which the products were packed in polyethylene packaging and stored at room temperature (28oc±3oc) for ninety days. the results demonstrated that: a significant solids uptake occurred; none of the obtained responses was influenced by the type of sugar used, whereas the osmotic agent concentration not only reflected on all of them it also interacted with the temperature influencing over moisture loss; during storage time, the products were microbiologically stable, without significant differences, in the organoleptic caracteristic, although the scores have showed a preference for the products obtained under the 60obrix, 60oc and a blend of demerara and crystal sugar. the high solids uptake occurred points to a necessity to achieve the optimization of the products in order to reduce it.

Abstract: several public health problems are due to environmental work, which, associated with sedentarism, contribute to reduce the quality of life of the worker. therefore, this study aimed to describe the profile, evaluate the physical condition and cardiovascular risk factor of health workers. health workers (198) from bauru and jau cities (46 ± 10 years old) were assessed. they answered a questionnaire and participated in antrophometric and functional assessments. values are presented as means ± sd. qui-squared (x2) analysis, odds rate and pearson correlation were used (p < 0.05). from all workers evaluated, 54% presented high body weight, 33% high blood pressure and 56% were sedentary. total cholesterol (tc), low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides (tg) above normal values were found in 49%, 41% and 24% of the individuals, respectively, and 75% presented low values of high-density lipoprotein. qui-squared analysis and odds rate confirmed that tg and blood pressure (bp) were higher for men compared with women. physical capacity was bad for 56% of men and 23% of women. also, flexibility was unsatisfactory for men and women. body mass index correlated positively with bp, tc and tg. aging was an important risk factor for bp, tc, blood glucose, body mass index and flexibility only for women (p < 0.05). the prevalence of multiple risk factors among these health workers shows that this population is not adequately assisted. for this reason, a program from the government in order to make this population recognize such problems and avoid premature retirement is suggested

Abstract: background: nasogastric intubation (ngi) has been used after abdominal surgery to prevent complications. however, the classic concept that gastric decompression prevents complications is being questioned. the aim of this study was to evaluate the lack of gastric decompression as a safe method in patients undergoing transduodenal papilotomy, choledocal-duodenal anastomosis or hepatic-jejunostomy roux-en-y. methods: twenty-four patients were submitted to transduodenal papilotomy (10), choledocal-duodenal anastomosis (10) or hepatic-jejunostomy roux-en-y (4) without gastric decompression using tube. results: sixteen (66%) patients didn’t present vomiting. there was no postoperative abdominal distension or vomiting. there was no case of dehiscence of duodenostomy, anastomosis or abdominal wall. none presented pulmonary complications. conclusion: our study suggests that transduodenal papilotomy and choledocal-duodenal anastomosis without ngi are not associated to postoperative complications. futhermore, this approach avoids the risk of using ngi, reducing hospital costs.

Minussi, Rosana Cristina;Soares-Ramos, Juliana Rocha Lopes;Coelho, Jorge Luiz Cavalcante;Silva, Daison Olzany;
Revista de Microbiologia , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0001-37141998000400002
Abstract: the use of other inducers as substitutes for pectin was studied aiming to reduce the production costs of pectic enzymes. the effects of sugar-cane juice on the production of pectin lyase (pl) and polygalacturonase (pg) by penicillium griseoroseum were investigated. the fungus was cultured in a mineral medium (ph 6.3) in a rotary shaker (150 rpm) for 48 h at 25oc. culture media were supplemented with yeast extract and sucrose or sugar-cane juice. sugar-cane juice added singly to the medium promoted higher pl activity and mycelial dry weight when compared to pectin and the use of sugar-cane juice and yeast extract yielded levels of pg activity that were similar to those obtained with sucrose-yeast extract or pectin. the results indicated that, even at low concentrations, sugar-cane juice was capable of inducing pectin lyase and polygalacturonase with no cellulase activity in p. griseoroseum.
