Usos lingüístics de l’alumnat d’origen estranger a l’educació primària de Catalunya [Language usage among school-children of foreign origin in primary education in Catalonia]
Vila, Ignasi,Siqués, Carina,Oller, Judith
Zeitschrift für Katalanistik , 2009,
Abstract: The recovery and preservation of the Catalan language initiated during the 1970’s has been a long process that has been backed by the positive attitudes of the whole population towards this language. However, in the last 10 years, the demographic composition of Catalonia has changed substantially. The article presents two studies about the linguistic uses of migrant students in primary education. The first study analy ses the linguistic uses of 625 12-year-old foreign students in 53 different schools, whereas the second study is an ethnographic research about the linguistic uses of foreign students carried out in a school where 90% of the students are migrants. The results show that, little by little and no matter if Catalan is the language of instruction or not, Spanish is the socially dominant language usually used by most foreign students. The only variables which modify this tendency are the presence of a high percentage of Catalan-speaking students in the classrooms and the use of Catalan in the students’ social environment

In recent decades, European educational systems are facing many challenges related to the treatment of cultural and linguistic diversity. The need to address this diversity requires new approaches to education; this in turn requires changes in the way we prepare teachers for the new reality they face in their classrooms. In this article we highlight some of the major problems that initial teacher training has to address in order to enable teachers to deal effectively, respectfully, and fairly with students whose linguistic and cultural background is different from their own. We also present several models for teacher education from Europe and North America based on clearly identified teacher competences for linguistic and cultural diversity.
Retrospective Study of the Use of a Fractional Radio Frequency Ablative Device in the Treatment of Acne Vulgaris and Related Acne Scars  [PDF]

Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications (JCDSA) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jcdsa.2015.54038
Abstract: Background: Acne vulgaris (AV) is a common disease that often results in disfiguring facial scarring that carries into adulthood. Here we report our experience with fractional radiofrequency (FRF) device in treatment of patients with acne and acne related scarring. Materials & Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of all patients with acne scarring who completed a four treatment regimen in our clinic. Results: We identified eight patients who completed four treatments with median age of 20.5 years (range 17 - 41). All patients demonstrated significant improvement of acne lesions and acne scarring. Skin biopsies demonstrated reduction of scar depth and increased new collagen production, and repopulation of the scar tissue by elastic fibers and adnexal structures after the fourth treatment. Conclusion: FRF emerges as a safe and effective treatment modality for AV and acne related scars. Further randomized controlled studies are required to fully evaluate the magnitude of this positive effect and more basic science studies are needed in order to better characterize its mechanism of action on acne lesions.
Long Term Follow-Up Results of a Fractional Radio Frequency Ablative Treatment of Acne Vulgaris and Related Acne Scars  [PDF]
Judith Hellman
Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications (JCDSA) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/jcdsa.2016.63013
Abstract: Introduction: Acne vulgaris and acne scarring are prevalent conditions that can have a negative effect on a patient’s quality of life. Fractional radiofrequency technologies have been shown to be clinically safe and effective in managing acne scars through dermal remodeling without causing direct damage to the epidermis. In a recently published study, we presented our clinical and histological results in the treatment of patients with active acne and acne related scarring using a Fractional RF (FRF) device. In the current article we demonstrate long term follow-up results, up to two years post last fractional treatment. Methods: Four out of the eight patients who completed a four treatment regimen were invited for long term follow-up visit to document treatment results. In some cases, touch-up treatments were conducted to optimize clinical results. Results: Patients demonstrated significant improvement of acne lesions, acne scarring, pores and skin texture. Long term photos demonstrated that clinical improvement progressed with time. Conclusion: The current study further supports the previous findings that FRF is a safe and effective treatment modality for active acne and acne related scars. Treatment protocol can be customized according to patient needs and clinical results last for long term.
The Antithesis of Entropy: Biosemiotic Communication from Genetics to Human Language with Special Emphasis on the Immune Systems
John W. Oller
Entropy , 2010, DOI: 10.3390/e12040631
Abstract: Entropy can be defined as the antithesis of well-formed true reports that agree with each other and with the material facts accessible through the experience of one or more competent observers. The abstract convergence (strictly formal, logical agreement) of true narrative representations (TNRs)—ordinary valid reports of facts of experience—makes them formally more complete than fictions, errors, lies, and nonsense. A limit of absolute entropy is theoretically reached if all resemblance to a TNR is lost. As argued here, TNRs—formally defined along the lines of Peirce's exact logic—provide the necessary foundation for functional human languages and for biosemiotic systems. The theoretical concepts of pragmatic mapping—the fitting of a TNR to whatever facts it represents—and the constructive cycle of abstraction that enables a child to discover the systems underlying such mappings are introduced and illustrated from child development and then shown to apply to the human neuroarchitecture, genetics, fetal development, and our immune systems. It is also argued that biological disorders and disease conditions logically must involve corrupted (damaged, undeveloped, or otherwise incomplete) representations at one or many levels.

Obligaciones prima facie y derrotabilidad
Oller,Carlos A.;
An??lisis filos?3fico , 2006,
Abstract: this paper deals with some problems concerning the logical treatment of prima facie obligations in the work of carlos alchourrón. on the one hand, we will argue that his dft system for defeasible conditionals does not adequately formalize the intuitive notion of contributory condition used by alchourrón to elucidate the notion of defeasible conditional. on the other hand, we will argue that david ross' notion of prima facie duty is not adequately formalized in alchourrón' s deontic system ad, an extension of his dft logic.

Aimed at introducing a group of useful theoric and practical elements to understand the functioning of search engines in Internet, a review of the literature on this topic was carried out using the well known searchers: Google, Infoseek, MetaCrawler among others..The main features of search engines and its components are presented, with special emphasis in the use of boolean operators and its use in every search engine studied to carry out information search with various degrees of complexity.
Objetos rituales e identidad
Monserrat Ventura i Oller
Anthropologica , 2000,
Nucleon-Nucleon Interactions from Effective Field Theory
Jose A. Oller
Physics , 2002, DOI: 10.1063/1.1570565
Abstract: We have established a new convergent scheme to treat analytically nucleon-nucleon interactions from a chiral effective field theory. The Kaplan-Savage-Wise (KSW) amplitudes are resummed to fulfill the unitarity or right hand cut to all orders below pion production threshold. This is achieved by matching order by order in the KSW power counting the general expression of a partial wave with resummed unitarity cut, with the inverses of the KSW amplitudes. As a result, a new convergent and systematic KSW expansion is derived for an on-shell interacting kernel \cR in terms of which the partial waves are computed. The agreement with data for the S-waves is fairly good up to laboratory energies around 350 MeV and clearly improves and reestablishes the phenomenological success of the KSW amplitudes when treated within this scheme.
