Abstract: Seasonalvariationinenvironmentalfactorsisvitaltotheregulationofseasonalreproductioninprimates.Consequently,long-termsystematicdataisnecessarytoclarifythebirthseasonalityandpatternofprimatesinhighlyseasonalenvironments.Thisstudyindicatedthatblack-and-whitesnub-nosedmonkeys(Rhinopithecusbieti)atMt.Lashaexhibitedstrictbirthseasonalitywithapulsemodel.Infantswerebornwithacertaindegreeofsynchronization.Birthdistributionshowedthreebirthpeaks,andthebirthpatternshoweda“V”styleineven-numberedyearsandagradualincreaseinodd-numberedyears.Thebeginningdate,enddateandmedianbirthdatewereearlierineven-numberedyearsthanthoseinodd-numberedyears.Thehigherlatitudeoftheirhabitats,earlierbirthdate,shorterbirthperiod,fewerbirthpeaksandstrongerbirthsynchronymightbeadaptationsforstronglyseasonalvariationinclimateandfoodresources.Afterthesummersolsticewhendaylightlengthbegantograduallyshorten,R.bietiatMt.Lashastartedtobreedduringtheperiodwiththehighestenvironmentaltemperatureandfoodavailability,whichimpliedthatphotoperiodmaybetheproximatefactortriggeringtheonsetofestrusandmating.ItappearsthatR.bieticoincidedconceptionandmid-lactationwiththepeakinstaplefoods,andweaningwiththepeakinhighqualityoffoods.Thus,foodavailabilitywastheultimatefactorregulatingreproductiveseasonality,andphotoperiodwastheproximatefactorfine-turningthecoordinationbetweenseasonalbreedingandfoodavailability.
Serotonin Influences the Endogenous Opiate Peptides in the Rat Spinal Cord to Participates in Pain Modulation  [PDF]

Abstract: Spinal cord is a necessary pathway that transfers the body nociceptive inputs to the brain. Endogenous opiate peptides have been proven to participate in the nociceptive process at spinal level. It has reported that serotonin (5-HT, 5-hydroxytryptamine) in spinal cord plays a role in pan modulation, which can be blocked by opiate receptor antagonists. The present study was designed to investigate the interaction between 5-HT and endogenous opiate peptides at rat spinal level effecting on pain modulation. The results showed that 1) pain stimulation increased not only leucine-enkephalin (L-Ek), β-endorphin (β-Ep) and dynorphin A1-13 (DynA1-13) concentrations but also 5-HT and 5-hydorxyindoleace acid (5-HIAA, the 5-HT main metabolic product) concentrations in spinal cord significantly; 2) 5-HT could increase L-Ek, β-Ep and DynA1-13 concentrations in spinal cord in a dose-dependent manner, whereas cypotolamine (a 5-HT receptor antagonist) decreased L-Ek, β-Ep and DynA1-13 concentrations in spinal cord. The data suggested that 5-HT antinociceptive role might be involved in the endogenous opiate peptide system through 5-HT receptors at spinal level.
Mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of dye MG by TiO2-film electrode with cathodic bias potential

Abstract: Photoelectrocatalytic degradation of malachite green (MG) under visible light irradiation with TiO2-film electrode has been investigated to reveal the mechanism for TiO2 photocatalytic degradation of dyes. The supported TiO2 electrode was prepared in laboratory and detected by scanning electron micros-copy and X-ray diffractometry. We have examined the degradation kinetics, change in degradation rate of MG and photocurrent change with the bias potential, voltage-induced adsorption of dyes, accumu-lation of electrons in the TiO2 electrode, effect of various additives such as benzoquinone (BQ), and formation of active oxygen species by UV-visible spectroscopy, TOC and spin-trap ESR spectrometry. It was found that the dyes could controllably interact with TiO2 surface by external bias and charge of dyes. The cationic dye MG underwent efficient mineralization at negative bias under visible light irradiation, but N-dealkylation process predominated at positive bias under visible light irradiation. At negative bias of 0.4 V vs SCE, the O2· and dye·+ were formed simultaneously at the electrode/electrolyte interface during degradation of cationic MG. Experimental results imply both the superoxide radical and the dye cationic radical are essential to the mineralization of the dyes under visible-light-induced photocatalytic conditions.
High-Level Overproduction of Thermobifida Enzyme in Streptomyces lividans Using a Novel Expression Vector

Abstract: In this study, we constructed a novel Streptomyces- E.coli shuttle vector pZRJ362 combining the xylose isomerase promoter and amylase terminator. A gene encoding the endoglucanase Cel6A in Thermobifida fusca was amplified by PCR, cloned into Streptomyces lividans host strain using the novel expression vector and Pichia pastoris GS115 host strain using the vector pPICZα-C, respectively. Afterwards, the expression pattern and the maximum expression level were comparatively studied in both expression systems. The maximum enzyme activity of Cel6A-(His) 6 secreted in S. lividans supernatant after 84-h of cultivation amounted to 5.56 U/mL, which was dramatically higher than that secreted in P. pastoris about 1.4 U/mL after 96-h of cultivation. The maximum expression level of Cel6A-(His) 6 in S. lividans supernatant reached up to 173 mg/L after 84-h of cultivation. The endoglucanase activity staining SDS-PAGE showed that there were some minor proteins in S. lividans supernatant which may be the Cel6A derivant by proteolytic degradation, while there was no proteolytic product detected in supernatant of P. pastoris.

Abstract: Our previous work has demonstrated that arginine vasopressin (AVP) plays a role in pain modulation. The present study investigated which kinds of neuropeptides and neurotransmitters in central nervous system might be involved in AVP antinociceptive role in the rat. The results showed that (1) intraventricular injection (icv) of V1 receptor antagonist [d(CH2)5Tyr(Me)AVP] and V2 receptor antagonist [d(CH2)5[D-Ile2, Ile4, Ala9-NH2]AVP] blocked the antinociceptive effect induced by AVP (icv), (2) the opiate recaptor antagonist (naloxone) reversed the antinociceptive effect induced by AVP (icv), and (3) both the serotonin receptor antagonist (cypoheptadine) and M receptor antagonist (atropine) could attenuate the antinociceptive effect induced by AVP (icv); but (4) oxytocin, dopamine, N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), N, α or β receptor antagonist did not influence the antinociceptive effect induced by AVP (icv). The data suggested that AVP antinociceptive role was involved in the endogenous opiate peptide, serotonin and acetylcholine systems in central nervous system.
Calpain Activator Dibucaine Induces Platelet Apoptosis

Abstract: Calcium-dependent calpains are a family of cysteine proteases that have been demonstrated to play key roles in both platelet glycoprotein Ibα shedding and platelet activation and altered calpain activity is associated with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. Calpain activators induce apoptosis in several types of nucleated cells. However, it is not clear whether calpain activators induce platelet apoptosis. Here we show that the calpain activator dibucaine induced several platelet apoptotic events including depolarization of the mitochondrial inner transmembrane potential, up-regulation of Bax and Bak, down-regulation of Bcl-2 and Bcl-X L, caspase-3 activation and phosphatidylserine exposure. Platelet apoptosis elicited by dibucaine was not affected by the broad spectrum metalloproteinase inhibitor GM6001. Furthermore, dibucaine did not induce platelet activation as detected by P-selectin expression and PAC-1 binding. However, platelet aggregation induced by ristocetin or α-thrombin, platelet adhesion and spreading on von Willebrand factor were significantly inhibited in platelets treated with dibucaine. Taken together, these data indicate that dibucaine induces platelet apoptosis and platelet dysfunction.
Role of 14-3-3ζ in Platelet Glycoprotein Ibα-von Willebrand Factor Interaction-Induced Signaling

Abstract: The interaction of platelet glycoprotein (GP) Ib-IX with von Willebrand factor (VWF) exposed at the injured vessel wall or atherosclerotic plaque rupture initiates platelet transient adhesion to the injured vessel wall, which triggers intracellular signaling cascades leading to platelet activation and thrombus formation. 14-3-3ζ has been verified to regulate the VWF binding function of GPIb-IX by interacting with the cytoplasmic domains of GPIb-IX. However, the data regarding the role of 14-3-3ζ in GPIb-IX-VWF interaction-induced signaling still remain controversial. In the present study, the data indicate that the S609A mutation replacing Ser 609 of GPIbα with alanine (S609A) significantly prevented the association of 14-3-3ζ with GPIbα before and after the VWF binding to GPIbα. GPIb-IX-VWF interaction-induced activations of Src family kinases and protein kinase C were clearly reduced in S609A mutation. Furthermore, S609A mutation significantly inhibited GPIb-IX-VWF interaction-induced elevation of cytoplasmic Ca 2+ levels in flow cytometry analysis. Taken together, these data indicate that the association of 14-3-3ζ with the cytoplasmic domain of GPIbα plays an important role in GPIb-IX-VWF interaction-induced signaling.
A Novel Benzo[f][1,7]Naphthyridine Produced by Streptomyces Albogriseolus from Mangrove Sediments

Abstract: Mangrove Streptomyces represent a rich source of novel bioactive compounds in medicinal research. A novel alkaloid, named 1-N-methyl-3-methylamino-[N-butanoic acid-3¢-(9¢-methyl-8¢-propen-7¢-one)-amide]-benzo[f][1,7]naphthyridine-2-one (1) was isolated from Streptomyces albogriseolus originating from mangrove sediments. The structure of compound 1 was elucidated by extensive spectroscopic data analyses and verified by the 13C-NMR calculation at the B3LYP/6-311+G(2d,p) level of theory.
Stability of Switched Linear Singular Systems with Impulsive Effects

Abstract: A new class of switched linear singular systems with impulsive effects is introduced. The stability of such systems is investigated by using dwell time and average dwell time approaches. A sufficient condition for exponential stability is presented. It is shown that if dwell time is chosen to be sufficiently large and the reset law is admissible, then exponential stability is guaranteed. The admissible reset law is developed using the restricted equivalent property of singular systems. A numerical example illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Spectral transmittance and module structure fitting for transmission-mode GaAs photocathodes

Abstract: A transmission-mode GaAs photocathode includes four layers of glass, Si3N4, Ga1-xAlxAs and GaAs. A gradient-doping photocathode sample was obtained by molecular beam epitaxy and its transmittance was measured by spectrophotometer from 600 nm to 1100 nm. The theoretical transmittance is derived and simulated based on the matrix formula for thin film optics. The simulation results indicate the influence of the transition layers and the three thin-film layers except glass on the transmittance spectra. In addition, a fitting coefficient needed for error modification enters into the fitted formula. The fitting results show that the relative error in the full spectrum reduces from 19.51% to 4.35% after the formula is modified. The coefficient and the thicknesses are gained corresponding to the minimum relative error, meanwhile each layer and total thin-film thickness deviation in the module can be controlled within 7%. The presence of glass layer roughness, layer interface effects and surface oxides is interpreted on the modification.
