Espinosa Sánchez, Juan Manuel;
Argumentos (México, D.F.) , 2010,
Abstract: in the course of universal history ii at the university of quintana roo in the 7th semester of the bachelors program of humanities during the summer of 2007 students were given to read the historical novel from umberto eco in the name of the rose. this was done with didactic purposes in order to introduce the students to the middle ages and to teach them which specific part of this era and culture arrived in the new spain in the xvi century; i.e. scholastic philosophy, the castilian language, the latin language, and the catholic religion among other cultural aspects. it is important to consider that many of our students come not only from urban areas but from rural ones as well and in many cases they have a mayan background and many of them even speak the mayan language. this is one of the most important aspects to be considered while teaching courses of this nature; for many students this will be their first time encountering with this sort of knowledge new to them since it is not taught in any previous educational levels in the state of quintana roo, mexico.

Abstract:

Capsicum annuum L. was initially domesticated in Mexico and northern Central America, and represented an ancient Neotropical plant food complex. The purpose of this paper is to report the isolation and purification of a novo-member of a protease inhibitor from jalapeño pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) (PIJP). The molecular weight of PIJP inhibitor is 5.95 kDa with 56 amino acids and 6 Cys residues with high inhibitory activity to trypsin with a Ki value of 95 nM. This inhibitor according to the alignment with homologous from NCBI and Pfam databases is a member of proteinase inhibitors II. It is worthwhile to mention a major compositional difference between the proteinase inhibitor II families which have 8 Cys residues. PIJP is the first purified proteinase inhibitor, member of this family with only 6 Cys residues.

Abstract: Proteomics is expected to play a key role in cancer biomarker discovery. Although it has become feasible to rapidly analyze proteins from crude cell extracts using mass spectrometry, complex sample composition hampers this type of measurement. Therefore, for effective proteome analysis, it becomes critical to enrich samples for the analytes of interest. Despite that one-third of the proteins in eukaryotic cells are thought to be phosphorylated at some point in their life cycle, only a low percentage of intracellular proteins is phosphorylated at a given time.

Abstract: the object of this study is to present the descriptive epidemiology of cancer in children at the world and national levels. the international and national literature published on cancer in children was comprehensively reviewed, with emphasis on reports treating epidemiological aspects of time, place and person. for practical reasons and with the aim of integrating the information, only the more relevant publications were included. incidence and child mortality were analyzed. overall incidence is between 100 and 150 (annual rates = cases x 106 children). specific incidence varies according to the type of cancer, the region and the country. the latin american pattern of neoplasms is constituted by leukemias, lymphomas, and central nervous system tumors (cnst); in the northamerican/european pattern the cnst appear in second place and in the african pattern, lymphomas show predominance. incidence is higher among the younger than 5 year olds, from urban environments, and there is a 1% annual increase of cancer in northamerican children. child mortality has diminished remarkably, mainly in developed countries, whereas in developing or underdeveloped countries, incidence remains stable or shows a slight fall. the incidence of cancer in children is greater in developed countries, but in underdeveloped countries it may be underestimated. these countries have not managed to reduce the incidence of child mortality caused by cancer, as have the united states or great britain. further studies on the epidemiology of cancer in children are necessary, since many data remain unknown.

Abstract: Introduction Gene profiling may improve prognostic accuracy in patients with early breast cancer, but this technology is not widely available. We used commercial assays for qRT-PCR to assess the performance of the gene profiles included in the 70-Gene Signature, the Recurrence Score and the Two-Gene Ratio. Methods 153 patients with early breast cancer and a minimum follow-up of 5 years were included. All tumours were positive for hormonal receptors and 38% had positive lymph nodes; 64% of patients received adjuvant chemotherapy. RNA was extracted from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) specimens using a specific kit. qRT-PCR amplifications were performed with TaqMan Gene Expression Assays products. We applied the three gene-expression-based models to our patient cohort to compare the predictions derived from these gene sets. Results After a median follow-up of 91 months, 22% of patients relapsed. The distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) at 5 years was calculated for each profile. For the 70-Gene Signature, DMFS was 95% -good prognosis- versus 66% -poor prognosis. In the case of the Recurrence Score, DMFS was 98%, 81% and 69% for low, intermediate and high-risk groups, respectively. Finally, for the Two-Gene Ratio, DMFS was 86% versus 70%. The 70-Gene Signature and the Recurrence Score were highly informative in identifying patients with distant metastasis, even in multivariate analysis. Conclusion Commercially available assays for qRT-PCR can be used to assess the prognostic utility of previously published gene expression profiles in FFPE material from patients with early breast cancer. Our results, with the use of a different platform and with different material, confirm the robustness of the 70-Gene Signature and represent an independent test for the Recurrence Score, using different primer/probe sets.
Terapia celular en enfermedades renales y cardiovasculares
Senior Sánchez,Juan Manuel;
Iatreia , 2006,
Abstract: although there have been important advances in the field of molecular biology, the mechanisms responsible for nephrogenesis and the factors that modulate the process of development, proliferation, growth, and maturation during fetal and adult life have not been thoroughly explained. animals, including mammals, share the intrinsic ability to regenerate tissues and organs as an important biological defense mechanism. in the case of the kidney, after tissue damage secondary to injury, anatomical and functional recovery of integrity is achieved, accompanied by the activation of a complex, poorly understood process, leading to the replacement of damaged tubular cells by functional ones that reorganize tubular architecture. this regeneration and repair process is produced by somatic, exogenous, adult stem cells, and probably by intrinsic renal stem cells, that are responsible for maintaining renal homeostasis
