Abstract: Resumen La disección aguda es la afección más común de la aórta torácica y es dos o tres veces más frecuente que la ruptura del aneurisma aórtico abdominal; de no tratarse, tiene una mortalidad del 90% a tres meses. En los últimos a os, se han dado grandes avances en su diagnóstico oportuno y tratamiento adecuado, tanto médico como quirúrgico, con significativa disminución de la mortalidad. Su incidencia está aumentando en los países industrializados, quizá incluso esté infravalorada, debida al grupo de pacientes que fallecen antes de que se llegue a un diagnóstico definitivo. In recent years, much progress has been made in timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment, both medical and surgical management, with significant reduction in mortality. Its incidence is increasing in industrialized countries, perhaps even being undervalued, because of the large number of patients who die before they reach a definitive diagnosis.

Abstract: This paper studies the distribution of company income and provides evidence that income statistics follow a universal law (Zipf-Mandelbrot) and the parameters of this distribution gather relevant information as a proxy of the state's economy. This article contributes to the economic interpretation of these parameters. We find that they are robust indicators of the structure of an economy and should be taken into account when designing policies to promote competition.
Darwin's pigeons and the evolution of the columbiforms: recapitulation of ancient genes

Abstract: to commemorate the sesquicentennial of charles darwin's "on the origin of species by means of natural selection", we address an essential topic in this publication. domestic pigeons were extremely important in shaping darwin's theory of evolution: pigeons featured prominently not only in his "origin of species", but also in his treatise on "variation under domestication", in his "descent of man" and finally in his "expression of emotions". darwin saw the process of domestication as solid evidence demonstrating the power of selection. he argued convincingly that all domestic pigeon breeds (some 150 in his day) descended from one ancestral species, the rock dove (columba livia), and that from this single species, humans selected directionally for colors, sizes, shapes, peculiarities of bill shape and length, plumage characteristics and voice qualities. while these domestic races achieved remarkable morphological differentiation under selection in the course of human generations, extant genera of pigeons (columbiformes) have attained similar traits during the course of natural selection in the wild. we present a comparison of such characters between modern domestic breeds of the rock dove, the original darwin's pigeons plus new breeds, and wild pigeon species to encourage further studies on their evolution in the light of molecular techniques not available at darwin's time.

Abstract: La prolongación anormal del intervalo QT tiene relevancia por su asociación con inestabilidad eléctrica ventricular, pudiéndose presentar arritmias ventriculares polimórficas en "puntas torcidas". Los síntomas acompa antes de estas arritmias son el síncope, convulsiones o la muerte súbita. Se puede clasificar en síndrome de QT prolongado congénito, el cual se hereda o lo adquiere el individuo de manera esporádica y el síndrome adquirido que se puede presentar asociado a fármacos u otras situaciones clínicas. Presentamos el caso de una mujer de 41 a os de edad que desarrolló cambios típicos de síndrome de QT prolongado por isquemia miocárdica y hacemos una breve revisión. The abnormal QT interval prolongation has relevance for its association with ventricular electric instability, which could present polymorphic ventricular arrhythmias in "torsade de pointes". The underlying symptoms of these arrhythmias are syncope, convulsions or sudden death. It can be classified as congenital long QT syndrome which is inherited or the subject acquired it in a sporadic way; and the acquired syndrome that can be associated to drugs or other clinic factors. We show a case of a 41 years old woman who developed typical changes of long QT syndrome by myocardial ischemia and we make a brief review of it.
DARWIN'S PIGEONS AND THE EVOLUTION OF THE COLUMBIFORMS: RECAPITULATION OF ANCIENT GENES

Abstract: Dentro del marco conmemorativo del 150 aniversario de "El Origen de las Especies por Medio de la Selección Natural" de Charles Darwin, se presenta un ensayo de un tema esencial de esta publicación. Los pichones domésticos tuvieron un lugar destacado en la conformación de la teoría de evolución de Darwin: no sólo jugaron un papel fundamental en "El Origen de las Especies", sino también en su tratado sobre "Variación en Domesticación", en "La Descendencia del Hombre" y finalmente en "Expresión de Emociones". Darwin vio en el roceso de domesticación una evidencia sólida para demostrar el poder de la selección. él arguyó de manera convincente que todas las razas de pichón (unas 150 en su época) provenían de una sola especie ancestral, la paloma doméstica (Columba livia). De esta especie única, los humanos seleccionaron direccionalmente colores, tama os, formas, particularidades en la forma y longitud del pico, características del plumaje y cualidades vocales. Mientras estas razas domésticas adquirieron una diferenciación morfológica impresionante bajo selección en el curso de generaciones humanas, los géneros actuales de los pichones (Columbiformes) han adquirido rasgos similares durante el curso de la selección natural en la vida silvestre. En este trabajo se hace una comparación entre las razas actuales de la paloma doméstica, los pichones de Darwin originales más otros obtenidos posteriormente, y varias especies de pichones silvestres. De esta forma se desea alentar el estudio, en razas domésticas y especies silvestres, sobre la evolución de los rasgos morfológicos que cautivaron a Darwin, a la luz de técnicas moleculares que aún no se desarrollaban en su tiempo.
Immunogenic Profiling in Mice of a HIV/AIDS Vaccine Candidate (MVA-B) Expressing Four HIV-1 Antigens and Potentiation by Specific Gene Deletions

Abstract: The immune parameters of HIV/AIDS vaccine candidates that might be relevant in protection against HIV-1 infection are still undefined. The highly attenuated poxvirus strain MVA is one of the most promising vectors to be use as HIV-1 vaccine. We have previously described a recombinant MVA expressing HIV-1 Env, Gag, Pol and Nef antigens from clade B (referred as MVA-B), that induced HIV-1-specific immune responses in different animal models and gene signatures in human dendritic cells (DCs) with immunoregulatory function.

Abstract: The highly attenuated vaccinia virus strain NYVAC expressing HIV-1 components has been evaluated as a vaccine candidate in preclinical and clinical trials with encouraging results. We have previously described that the presence of C7L in the NYVAC genome prevents the induction of apoptosis and renders the vector capable of replication in human and murine cell lines while maintaining an attenuated phenotype in mice.
Improving Adaptive and Memory Immune Responses of an HIV/AIDS Vaccine Candidate MVA-B by Deletion of Vaccinia Virus Genes (C6L and K7R) Blocking Interferon Signaling Pathways

Abstract: Poxvirus vector Modified Vaccinia Virus Ankara (MVA) expressing HIV-1 Env, Gag, Pol and Nef antigens from clade B (termed MVA-B) is a promising HIV/AIDS vaccine candidate, as confirmed from results obtained in a prophylactic phase I clinical trial in humans. To improve the immunogenicity elicited by MVA-B, we have generated and characterized the innate immune sensing and the in vivo immunogenicity profile of a vector with a double deletion in two vaccinia virus (VACV) genes (C6L and K7R) coding for inhibitors of interferon (IFN) signaling pathways. The innate immune signals elicited by MVA-B deletion mutants (MVA-B ΔC6L and MVA-B ΔC6L/K7R) in human macrophages and monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDCs) showed an up-regulation of the expression of IFN-β, IFN-α/β-inducible genes, TNF-α, and other cytokines and chemokines. A DNA prime/MVA boost immunization protocol in mice revealed that these MVA-B deletion mutants were able to improve the magnitude and quality of HIV-1-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cell adaptive and memory immune responses, which were mostly mediated by CD8+ T cells of an effector phenotype, with MVA-B ΔC6L/K7R being the most immunogenic virus recombinant. CD4+ T cell responses were mainly directed against Env, while GPN-specific CD8+ T cell responses were induced preferentially by the MVA-B deletion mutants. Furthermore, antibody levels to Env in the memory phase were slightly enhanced by the MVA-B deletion mutants compared to the parental MVA-B. These findings revealed that double deletion of VACV genes that act blocking intracellularly the IFN signaling pathway confers an immunological benefit, inducing innate immune responses and increases in the magnitude, quality and durability of the HIV-1-specific T cell immune responses. Our observations highlighted the immunomodulatory role of the VACV genes C6L and K7R, and that targeting common pathways, like IRF3/IFN-β signaling, could be a general strategy to improve the immunogenicity of poxvirus-based vaccine candidates.
