Abstract: the modeling and simulation of a device that is part of an intelligent protection scheme. a voltage-time sectionalizer is proposed, as the basic unit of the system applied to an urban-rural distributor of electricity. the impact of distributed generation in the implemented scheme using a general purpose software simulation tool is demonstrated. this software allows implementing the finite state machine that models the proposed section of the protection scheme. an important result of this study is that the use of the proposed device maintains the coordination even with the inclusion of distributed generation. it is also clearly established the maximum number of sectionalizers that can be interconnected in series.

Abstract: Se presenta el modelado y simulación de un dispositivo que forma parte de un esquema de protección inteligente. 9e propone un seccionador tensión-tiempo como base del sistema de protecciones aplicado a un distribuidor urbano-rural de electricidad. Se muestra el impacto de la generación distribuida en el esquema implementado y la utilización de un software de propósito general como herramienta de simulación. Este software permite implementar la máquina de estado finito que modela el seccionador propuesto, base del esquema de protecciones. Un resultado importante de este trabajo es que la utilización del dispositivo propuesto mantiene la coordinación aún frente a la inclusión de la generación distribuida. 9e establece también con claridad la máxima cantidad de seccionadores que pueden ser interconectados en serie. Future Changes in Drought Characteristics over Southern South America Projected by a CMIP5 Multi-Model Ensemble  [PDF]

Abstract:

The impact of climate change on drought main characteristics was assessed over Southern South America. This was done through the precipitation outputs from a multi-model ensemble of 15 climate models of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5). The Standardized Precipitation Index was used as a drought indicator, given its temporal flexibility and simplicity. Changes in drought characteristics were identified by the difference for early (2011-2040) and late (2071-2100) 21st century values with respect to the 1979-2008 baseline. In order to evaluate the multi-model outputs, model biases were identified through a comparison with the drought characteristics from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre database for the baseline period. Future climate projections under moderate and high-emission scenarios showed that the occurrence of short-term and long-term droughts will be more frequent in the 21st century, with shorter durations and greater severities over much of the study area. These changes in drought characteristics are independent on the scenario considered, since no significant differences were observed on drought changes. The future changes scenario might be even more dramatic, taking into account that in most of the region the multi-model ensemble tends to produce less number of droughts, with higher duration and lower severity. Therefore, drought contingency plans should take these results into account in order to alleviate future water shortages that can have significant economic losses in the agricultural and water resources sectors of Southern South America.

Microchimerism in Graves' Disease

Abstract: Microchimerism is the presence of cells from one individual in another genetically distinct individual. Pregnancy is the main cause of natural microchimerism through transplacental bidirectional cell trafficking between mother and fetus. The consequences of pregnancy-related microchimerism are under active investigation. However, many authors have suggested a close relationship linking fetal microchimerism and the development of autoimmune diseases. It has been more than ten years now since the demonstration of the presence of a significant high number of fetal microchimeric cells residing in thyroid glands from operated patients with Graves' disease. This intrathyroidal fetal microchimerism is an attractive candidate mechanism for the modulation of Graves’ disease in pregnancy and the postpartum period. 1. Introduction Microchimerism is defined by the presence of alien cells within an individual tissue with genetically different background [1]. Microchimeric cells have two possible origins: natural and artificial. Examples of the former are pregnancy, miscarriage, and twinning or sexual intercourse, whereas the most common cases for the later are tissue transplant or blood transfusion. Pregnancy is the major source of natural microchimerism. Contrary to previous expectations, the placental trophoblastic physical barrier effect is not a perfect cutoff system. A certain cell leakage is present between mother and fetus during gestation, and this transplacental cell trafficking is a two-way process. Fetal cells movement into maternal circulation starts very early during pregnancy. Circulating fetal cells have been found in maternal blood as soon as the fourth week of gestation [2], whereas maternal microchimerism has been detected in a newborn thyroid autopsied at day 2, but so far has not been reported in thyroid diseases [3]. Earlier evidences concluded that fetal cells transfer into maternal circulation was more intense than maternal cells into fetal blood [4]. However, subsequent investigations estimated that fetus-to-maternal transfer should be as frequent as maternal-to-fetus trafficking because maternal DNA has been detected in 40–100% of cord blood samples when polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques were used [5, 6]. The extent of this phenomenon is universal since fetal cells can be found in the peripheral blood of almost 100% of women during pregnancy [7]. Although the level of circulating cells has been reported to be very low (1?:?500,000 fetal?:?maternal cells) [8], such fetal cells can remain after delivery for more than 38 years

Abstract: tthe potential effect of population density over scarce natural resources has been present since the beginning of the environmental and resource debates. the role that inequality plays in this relationship has been less studied. this paper proposes that better distributions of land can lessen the effect of population pressure over land degradation, mainly by changing the use of labor and by providing incentives for more sustainable farm and land-use practices. using gis technologies and data from more than 100 "veredas" in the boyacá region (colombia), the econometric results support the proposition that under better distribution of land, the effect of population density on land degradation is smaller.
