Reentry: a key mechanism for integration of brain function

Abstract: Reentry in nervous systems is the ongoing bidirectional exchange of signals along reciprocal axonal fibers linking two or more brain areas. The hypothesis that reentrant signaling serves as a general mechanism to couple the functioning of multiple areas of the cerebral cortex and thalamus was first proposed in 1977 and 1978 (Edelman, 1978). A review of the amount and diversity of supporting experimental evidence accumulated since then suggests that reentry is among the most important integrative mechanisms in vertebrate brains (Edelman, 1993). Moreover, these data prompt testable hypotheses regarding mechanisms that favor the development and evolution of reentrant neural architectures.
Screening of Colletotrichum (Ascomycota) isolates, causal agents of Soybean Anthracnose, for Laccase production

Abstract: colletotrichum truncatum is the most common pathogen fungus associated with soybean anthracnose. although the lignin-degrading enzyme laccase has been implicated in pathogenicity of a wide range of plant pathogenic fungi, its biological role in the colletotrichum -soybean disease system is unknown. the extent of the infection in our country led us to examine laccase production in argentinean colletotrichum strains isolated from diseased soybean plants from different geographic locations. ten strains (eight of them identified as c. truncatum) , were screened for in vitro laccase production. only six of the isolates, all of them c. truncatum , produced laccase activity when cultured on a defined medium based on pectin and asparagine as carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. strain bafc 3102 (isolated from chaco province), yielded the highest laccase titers (44 u/l) in this medium. denaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of extracellular culture fluids revealed one band with laccase activity (mol wt 67 kda). cuso 4 addition to media with either glucose or pectin as carbon sources increased up to 7-fold laccase production (280 u/l in the glucose medium), but the pattern of isoenzyme was not affected by culture age or medium composition. this is the first report on laccase production by c. truncatum.

Aunque la enzima ligninolítica lacasa se relaciona con la patogenicidad de un amplio rango de hongos fitopatógenos, su rol biológico en la interacción Colletotrichum -soja aún se desconoce. La extensión de la infección en la Argentina , nos ha llevado a examinar la producción de lacasa en cepas aisladas de plantas enfermas de soja de diferentes regiones de nuestro país. Se evaluó la producción in vitro de lacasa en diez cepas (ocho de ellas identificadas como C. truncatum ). Sólo seis, todas correspondientes a C. truncatum , produjeron lacasa cuando fueron cultivadas en un medio con pectina y asparagina. La máxima actividad en este medio (44 U/L) se detectó en la cepa BAFC 3102 (aislada en la Provincia del Chaco). La electroforesis en SDS PAGE de los sobrenadantes de cultivo reveló una única banda con actividad lacasa (peso molecular 67 kDa). La adición de CuSO 4 al medio incrementó hasta siete veces su producción (280 U/L en medio con glucosa), sin embargo la edad del cultivo o la composición del medio no produjeron variaciones en el patrón isoenzimático. Este es el primer reporte sobre producción de lacasa por C. truncatum.

Abstract: the application of quality management systems in the agricultural and husbandry area is relatively new. norm iso/iec 17025:2005, although widely applied, it is focused on specialties such as chemistry and physics. therefore, implementation of this norm to plant health laboratories, where results are primarily qualitative, is difficult and without an adequate interpretation or adaptation. this situation could be reversed if the following alternatives would exist: 1) a norm which interprets the iso/iec 17025 for plant and livestock health laboratories, and 2) a specific norm for this type of laboratories, in agreement with the iso/iec 17025, but with specific requirements.

Abstract: While television still represents the most pervasive medium by which Americans get their news, questions as to the quality and content being reported have been raised. Through the lens of framing theory, this study utilizes content analysis of three main evening news broadcasts to ex-amine what type of news is being reported and in what context. Results suggest that there is a significant difference between the broadcasts studied, and that the majority of each program is devoted to content other than what is considered “hard” news.
Screening of an E. coli O157:H7 Bacterial Artificial Chromosome Library by Comparative Genomic Hybridization to Identify Genomic Regions Contributing to Growth in Bovine Gastrointestinal Mucus and Epithelial Cell Colonization

Abstract: Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) O157:H7 can cause serious gastrointestinal and systemic disease in humans following direct or indirect exposure to ruminant feces containing the bacterium. The main colonization site of EHEC O157:H7 in cattle is the terminal rectum where the bacteria intimately attach to the epithelium and multiply in the intestinal mucus. This study aimed to identify genomic regions of EHEC O157:H7 that contribute to colonization and multiplication at this site. A bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library was generated from a derivative of the sequenced E. coli O157:H7 Sakai strain. The library contains 1152 clones averaging 150 kbp. To verify the library, clones containing a complete locus of enterocyte effacement (LEE) were identified by DNA hybridization. In line with a previous report, these did not confer a type III secretion (T3S) capacity to the K-12 host strain. However, conjugation of one of the BAC clones into a strain containing a partial LEE deletion restored T3S. Three hundred eighty-four clones from the library were subjected to two different selective screens; one involved three rounds of adherence assays to bovine primary rectal epithelial cells while the other competed the clones over three rounds of growth in bovine rectal mucus. The input strain DNA was then compared with the selected strains using comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) on an E. coli microarray. The adherence assay enriched for pO157 DNA indicating the importance of this plasmid for colonization of rectal epithelial cells. The mucus assay enriched for multiple regions involved in carbohydrate utilization, including hexuronate uptake, indicating that these regions provide a competitive growth advantage in bovine mucus. This BAC-CGH approach provides a positive selection screen that complements negative selection transposon-based screens. As demonstrated, this may be of particular use for identifying genes with redundant functions such as adhesion and carbon metabolism.

Abstract: An approximate analytic model is presented to describe spatial structure of refracted electromagnetic field arising at oblique incidence of a Gaussian beam on a plane boundary of an absorbing homogeneous medium. The analytic solution is obtained by asymptotic approximation of a Fourier field integral under the condition of great beam width in comparison with a wavelength (the geometrical-optics approximation). This model can be used also for approximate simulation of refracted field in the cases of beam incidence near the critical angle on transparent or absorbing (amplifying) refracting medium, if one artificially introduces the additional absorption (amplification), whose value is proportional to the ratio of the wavelength and the effective beam width. It is shown that the analytic model reflects the general features of refracted field at total internal reflection.

Abstract: This paper presents a look at the concept of Lean Manufacturing as applied to the office environment. Lean Manufac- turing, which is often referred to as Lean, is a philosophy of manufacturing process improvement through the elimina- tion of waste. As Lean developed since its origins in the automobile industry, it has been extended to apply to various enterprises and organizations, and has achieved a renowned reputation for reducing waste while adding value to prod- ucts and services. Lean has also been applied in the office environment; however, participants in the implementation of Lean Office face more difficulties because of higher variation in office processes, less foundation information for par- ticipants, and lack of references in literature. This paper addresses these issues by proposing, a systematic proce-dure for conducting Lean Office techniques, along with a case study at a local company. The case study demonstrates a step by step procedure to help more participants in Lean Office understand its benefits and how to get started.
Health Problems of the Elderly in Rural South India

Abstract: The worlda€ s elderly population is fast increasing. But there is scant information of their health needs in the developing countries. This study is an attempt to estimate their health problems. 197 persons aged 60 years and above were interviewed from 3 villages of Kaniyambadi Block, North Arcot District, and Tamil Nadu. The total Population of the villages was 4256, of which 240 (5.6 %) were those aged 60 years and above. Among the elderly, 80% of the women and 20% of the men were widowed. The majority of them (55%) had visual problems (cataract), followed by orthopaedic problems. Chronic respiratory disorders were significantly more in men while orthopaedic problem were more in women. Of these 15.6% were hypertensive, 8.6% mainly widows needed assistance in physical activities like bathing, toilet, and dressing, walking and eating. These findings were similar to the studies on the elderly done in the West, and demonstrate an urgent need towards planning for the elderly in India
