Abstract: We compared two samples of unrelated Spanish individuals, all of European origin: 281 methadone-maintained heroin-dependent patients (207 males and 74 females) who frequently used non-opioid substances, and 145 control subjects (98 males and 47 females). The A1-A1 genotype was detected in 7.1% of patients and 1.4% of controls (P = 0.011, odds ratio = 5.48, 95% CI 1.26–23.78). Although the A1 allele was not associated with heroin dependence in the entire sample, the frequency of A1 allele was higher in male patients than in male controls (24.4% vs. 16.3%, P = 0.024, odds ratio = 1.65, 95% CI 1.07–2.57). A logistic regression analysis showed an interaction between DRD2 alleles and gender (odds ratio = 1.77, 95% CI 1.15–2.70).Our results indicate that, in Spanish individuals, genotypes of the DRD2 TaqI A polymorphism contribute to variations in the risk of heroin dependence, while single alleles contribute only in males.A better understanding of the etiology of heroin dependence is crucial for improving the prevention and treatment of this severe mental disorder. Genes that could be risk factors for heroin dependence have not been consistently identified; however, genetic epidemiology studies have shown that they do have an impact. These studies, with one exception [1], also suggest that such genetic factors are mainly nonspecific, because they also confer vulnerability to other substance use disorders (SUD) [2-4].The gene coding for the dopamine receptor D2 (DRD2) could be involved in heroin dependence and other SUD as a nonspecific genetic factor, because opioids and other substances of abuse induce some of their rewarding effects through the mesolimbic dopamine system [5,6]. Preclinical research supports this hypothesis. An absence of opioid-rewarding effects has been reported in mice lacking DRD2 [7].The DRD2 TaqI A is a SNP with two variants: A1, the less frequent allele, and A2. The A1 allele is associated with a reduction in the density of D2 receptors at the str

Abstract:

AIMS: Hospitalisation at home (HaH) achieves comparable health outcomes to conventional in-patient care, in terms of cost-effectiveness and quality of life. Our objective was to assess the impact of episodes of acute decompensation of heart failure (ADCHF) on functional status and quality of life, in patients under HaH care compared with a matched group receiving conventional in-patient care at a Cardiology ward (CW). Methods: Randomised clinical trial in 71 patients with ADCHF attending the Emergency Department. Patients were either admitted to the hospital’s CW or to the HaH service. The functional status and health related quality of life (HRQOL) were assessed using the Barthel Index (BI) and the EQ-5D, Short Form-36 (SF-36) and Minnessota Living with Heart Failure (MLHFQ) questionnaires, administered at admission and, depending on the test, at discharge and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after discharge. Results: MLHFQ and SF-36 experienced significant improvement in most domains with respect to the initial values at discharge and 6 months after only in the HaH group; though by 12-months there were no significant differences. Barthel Index and EQ-5D value scores showed improvement with respect to initial values in both arms. The improvement could be appreciated in more components and for longer among the HaH patients. Conclusions: Functional independence and quality of life improve at discharge compared to admission, after both home-based and in-patient hospitalisation, outcomes being better in various respects over the first year of follow-up after hospital-at-home care.

Abstract: aim: to know the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of drug users admitted to a hospital. method: a descriptive-retrospective study. results: of the 123 patients admitted to the hospital (a total of 155 admissions), 84,5% of them were admitted through the emergency department. their main age was 33 ± 6 and the 65,9% were male. the 90,2% were injecting drug users (idu). the main age of initiation in the use of drugs was 21 years; and the time of addiction ranged from i to 30 years (69 patients remained addicted to drugs for 10 years or more). there were 102 hcv infections and 13 hbv infections, and 50 patients tested positive for at least i serological marker of hepatitis b infection; 65 were hiv positive (all ofthem were idu) and 61 were coinfected with hcv. 34 patients had aids. infectious diseases were responsible for 105 of the 155 admissions to hospital. in 134 occasions the patients were discharged and 11 died. conclusions: most of the patients were male. the admissions to hospital were mostly due to infectious diseases. the most commonly associated pathologies seen were to be hiv positive and to carry hcv. the outcome of patients was mainly the discharge from hospital, and those who died were all hiv positive.

Abstract: the length/weight relationships are described for astyanax bimaculatus, a. schubarti, aphyocharax nasutus, cheirodon notomelas, hyphessobrycon callistus, hemigrammus marginatus, moenkhausia intermedia, m. sanctae-filomenae and roeboides paranensis of tropical freshwater fishes in the high paraná river floodplain. the fishes were caught over a period of 12 month (march 1993 to february 1994). the equations of the length/weight relationships for each species were: wt=0.0235.ls3.13; wt=0.0162.ls2.89; wt=0.0179.ls3.11; wt=0.0199.ls3.09; wt=0.0183.ls3.10; wt=0.0140.ls3.14; wt= 0.0200.ls3.21 and wt=0.0101.ls3.21, respectively.

Scientia Et Technica , 2008,
