Journal of Electromagnetic Analysis and Applications (JEMAA) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jemaa.2012.42007
Abstract: We present numerical studies on the switching characteristics of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with modulation in the third order nonlinear index of refraction along it’s length. The FBG is operating in a continuous wave regime (CW). This study was done taking into account the possible asymmetry brought by the non harmonic modulation of the nonlinearity, leading to different reflection and transmission characteristics, that depend on the direction of propagation along the modulated nonlinear FBG. This phenomenon may be useful for applications like an optical isolator. It was found that for a set of values of the modulation parameter, the FBG can exhibit multistable states. The numerical studies were obtained starting from the coupled-mode equations solved from the coupled-mode theory and simulated using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method.

Case Reports in Dentistry , 2013, DOI: 10.1155/2013/741548
Abstract: A case of adult rhabdomyoma is reported. The lesion is a rare benign tumor of skeletal muscle origin which occurs predominantly in the head and neck region. In the present case, the clinical diagnosis favored a benign salivary gland tumor. Histologically, the tumor was composed of large round, oval, and polygonal cells of varying size with abundant pale, eosinophilic, fine, granular cytoplasm with peripherally located nuclei. Immunohistochemically, the lesion was positive for muscle-specific actin, smooth muscle actin, desmin, S100 protein, and Masson’s trichrome. Electron microscopic examination confirmed the presence of numerous myofibrils. The lesion was treated by surgical resection. The clinical, histological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural features are discussed in this study. 1. Introduction Rhabdomyomas are rare benign tumors derived from striated muscle, and can be classified generally into two types: cardiac type and extracardiac type. Cardiac rhabdomyoma occurs almost exclusively in the pediatric age group and may be associated with tuberous sclerosis, neurofibromatosis, and sebaceous adenomas. Current opinion is that the cardiac type represents a hamartomatous growth [1]. Extracardiac rhabdomyoma can be divided into three groups (adult, fetal, and genital types) with regards to clinical and morphological differences. The adult type is characterized by a slowly growing mass typically seen in the head and neck of elderly patients. In the fetal type, the lesion also typically involves the head and neck region and tends to occur at younger ages. The genital type is almost always found in the vulvovaginal region of middle-aged women [2]. The fetal and vaginal types are morphologically similar [3]. Seventy-seven percent of all extracardiac rhabdomyomas occur in the head and neck and 14% in the genital region [4]. The adult rhabdomyoma is the most common form of extracardiac rhabdomyoma. The tumor arises mainly within the head and neck region where it is believed to originate from the skeletal musculature of the third and fourth branchial arches. It is so called because of the histological resemblance to mature skeletal muscle cells [5]. These tumors are usually solitary; however, several authors have reported cases of adult multifocal extracardiac rhabdomyomas [6, 7]. In this paper we report a rare case of an adult rhabdomyoma originating in the floor of the mouth. 2. Case Report The patient, a 40-year-old white woman, came to dentistry complaining of a painless swelling in the left floor of mouth that had been present for 6 months. The

Abstract: this paper describes a control mechanism for dynamic selection of quality of service (qos) parameters used in a ieee 802.11e wireless local area network (wlan). the 802.11e specification, still under development, provides a new contention-based access method, called enhanced distributed coordination function (edcf). this method uses distinct values for interframe space and for contention window size to establish priorities between access categories (acs). the proposed mechanism selects these values based on the actual network load condition and on the applications delay requirements. such mechanism improves the new qos functionality, aiming to promote better channel utilization as well as to keep the desired service levels.

Abstract: seventy-seven s. aureus strains, isolated in milk samples obtained from 40 holstein cows suffering from subclinical mastitis in a dairy herd in the state of s?o paulo - brazil, were undergone to pcr-ribotyping and in vitro susceptibility testing to 12 antimicrobial drugs. pcr-ribotyping revealed nine different patterns and presented a higher discriminatory power (d = 0.82) in comparison with the in vitro antibiotic susceptibility test (d = 0.42). moreover,, the results showed four antibiotic resistance patterns, with the resistance to lincomycin being the most predominant and comprising 19 (24.7%) s. aureus strains. the other 58 (75.3%) isolates were sensitive to all antibiotics tested. of the 19 isolates which presented resistance to antibiotics, 14 (73.7%) were grouped in three ribotypes, and 13 (92.9%) of them were resistant to eritromycin and/or lincomycin. the large number of ribotypes and antibiotic resistance patterns found in this single dairy herd showed that one must be careful when considering the results of in vitro susceptibility tests obtained from a few s. aureus strains, because there is a high heterogeneity among naturally occurring populations of s. aureus, which must be taken into consideration in control programs against bovine mastitis.

Abstract: Com o presente trabalho, objetivou-se comparar o efeito bactericida do polivinilpirrolidona-iodo nas concentra es a 0,1% e 0,5% sobre a antissepsia do campo operatório oftálmico de c es. The objective of this study was to compare the bactericide effect of polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine at concentrations of 0.1% and 0.5% on antisepsis of dog ophthalmic region. Solutions with different concentrations were used on each eye of twenty dogs. On the right eye, the 0.1% solution was administered and, on the left eye, the 0.5% solution. Conjunctival sampling of both groups was performed before antisepsis (0), after 30 minutes (1), 1.5h (2) and 2.5h (3) of irrigation and cleaning. Bacterial growth was identified in 70% of ocular sample collected before the antisepsis. The bacterial agents found on different times of sampling were Staphylococcus intermedius, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus sp., Staphylococcus epidermidis, Bacillus sp. Diphtheroids, Enterobacter sp., Micrococcus sp. The 0.1% solution of polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine decreased by 64% and 50% bacteria growth after 1 and 2, respectively. The group that used the concentration of polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine 0.5% showed greater bactericide power. Therefore, the solution of polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine to 0.5% compared to 0.1% solution was more effective in reduction of the conjunctival microbiota up to 90min after antisepsis.

Einstein (S?o Paulo) , 2008,
Abstract: The authors describe a case of emergence of multi-resistant pathogens in a cystic fibrosis patient treated with inhaled vancomycin: A ten-year-old female patient, chronically infected with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, presenting worsening of lung disease. She was placed on inhaled vancomycin with clinical improvement, but B. cepacia complex was isolated in sputum and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium was identified in a rectal swab culture during treatment. The authors concluded that the use of inhaled vancomycin must be avoided in cystic fibrosis patients, since it may be related to the appearance of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus sp., and, therefore, to the increase of the risk of emergence of vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Comunicata Scientiae , 2012,
Abstract: Nicosulfuron and atrazine are herbicides widely used for weed control on corn crops. However, its selectivity is often fairly questionable due to genotypic variability of hybrids in the market. In this context, this study aims to assess both nicosulfuron selectivity and atrazine mixture in 34 corn hybrids. Treatment was arranged in a completely randomized block design, in a split-plot scheme (34x5)with four replicates, in which corn hybrids constituted the plots and herbicides the subplots. 34 corn hybrids were submitted to four herbicide treatments: nicosulfuron (rates of 50 and 60 g ha-1) andnicosulfuron + atrazine (20 + 1500 and 40 + 3000 g ha-1) as well as a non treated check for each hybrid. Application was performed at 19 days (V4/V5) after corn emergence. Phytointoxication symptomswere assessed at 7; 14 and 21 days after treatment application. One thousand grain weight and hybrid yield were also determined. Based on the results, it was observed that the phytotoxic effects of nicosulfuron+atrazine (40+3000 g ha-1) were enough to reduce the weight of 1000 seeds in hybrids BMX61, BMX750, and NB7405. Nevertheless, herbicide treatments, either alone or associated withatrazine, were selective to the 34 genotypes studied.
