Campe?es de produtividade: dores e febres nos canaviais paulistas
Novaes, José Roberto Pereira;
Estudos Avan?ados , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142007000100013
Abstract: since 1970, the sugar cane agro-industry has been going through modernization and production diversification processes that have guaranteed its expansion beyond traditionally productive regions. in recent years, these processes have received more attention due to sugar cane and alcohol?s favorable conditions in the international market and to the international investments in the sector. these changes affect the labor market dynamics, selection processes, kinds of labor agreements, organization of agricultural labor, as well as workers? profile. in this context, agricultural entrepreneurs still give priority to hiring migrant workers during the sugar cane harvest. the main reason for this preference is the high productivity of these workers in cutting sugar cane. since childhood, they have been used to the hard work on the land to ensure means of survival to their families. the work at the sugar cane plantations does not scare them, even when the demands put them at the limit of their physical capacities, deteriorating their body and bringing serious consequences to their health. this article shows the deterioration of work conditions in sugar cane plantations and exposes palliative measures put in practice by sugar factory proprietors in order to improve work conditions and not to alter productivity levels, remuneration and production control.
Múltiplos olhares sobre a mortalidade infantil no Ceará, Brasil
Sousa, José Roberto Pereira de;Nations, Marilyn;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2011000200007
Abstract: this qualitative study analyzes the perceptions of various social actors towards infant mortality and the program to reduce it in ceará state, northeast brazil. the study compares two municipalities (counties) that showed opposite infant mortality trends from 1993 to 1997, during which time ceará achieved international visibility for having reduced infant mortality statewide. a total of 48 semi-structured interviews with four groups of key informants health system managers, community health agents, mothers who had lost a child, and neighbor women with children in the same age bracket and content analysis revealed "multiple conflicting voices" on the issue. although the level of political determination to implement the interventions varied between the two municipalities, the differences in perceptions concerning infant death were more striking between the various groups of social actors, regardless of the municipality. the study revealed a kind of authoritarian educational practice that jeopardizes acceptance of the community health agents program. public policies are needed that give voice to the people closest to the experience of infant death.

Abstract: introduction: since world war ii, the pharmaceutical industry has consolidated itself as an important and lucrative economic activity. considering that the prescribers are physicians, the industry draws on heavy advertising and perks and benefits, beginning early in medical school. objectives: the objectives were to identify ethical perceptions among medical students in early medical school, besides comparing the various groups comprising the sample. sample and methods: this was a cross-sectional, descriptive study based on the application and analysis of a questionnaire on the relationship between physicians and the pharmaceutical industry, answered by 94 second-year medical students. statistical analysis used the wilcoxon's and fisher's exact tests. statistical significance was set at p = 0.5. results: the answers were similar to the code of medical ethics, last revised in 1988. in the comparison of the groups concerning the statement on the need for more time devoted to ethical issues, there was a difference between religious and non-religious students. discussion: students were aware of the pharmaceutical industry's influence, although they were unaware of some of its marketing mechanisms and the fact that they were vulnerable to advertising within the medical school setting. conclusion: the students' ethical perceptions were largely homogeneous and consistent with the code of medical ethics. they acknowledged the need for an on-going discussion on the subject
Diallel analysis of maize resistance to Phaeosphaeria maydis
Silva, Herberte Pereira da;Moro, José Roberto;
Scientia Agricola , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-90162004000100007
Abstract: in breeding programs directed towards genetic resistance against diseases, the estimation of genetic parameters that control resistance allows the introduction of resistance into suscetible germplasm to be clearly focused. the purposes of this study were to estimate heterosis effects, and the general (gca) and specific (sca) combining abilities by using two rating methods for resistance to phaeosphaeria maydis in a diallel analysis of 36 f1 maize hybrids and their nine inbred lines. trials were conducted in three environments. disease severity was evaluated in the whole plant (pi) and in the leaf positioned just below the point of insertion of the main ear (afa). the trials followed a randomized block design with plots represented by a 5 m long rows. differences among combining ability estimates for different environments and in both evaluation methods showed significant effects (p < 0.01) for environment (e), gca, and gca × e. the sca, and sca × e effects were not significant for any of the disease severity variables. the gca effects were more important than sca for this set of inbred lines, suggesting that additive genetic effects are the most important sources of variation for this trait. heterosis effects for resistance were estimated, and it was possible to identify specific hybrid combinations between lines which have high potential for genetic control of this pathogen. results for both disease severity variables were practically identical, even though the pi method was more convenient to use.

Abstract The objective of this article is to identify the cultural elements that make theorganizational process more difficult to be developed focused on the theoreticalsocial management. The text was divided into four parts. First, related socialmanagement concept was approached and it was possible to notice that it differedfrom other modules. Secondly, it was presented concepts of organizational learning,focusing on the social capital and the social network formation. Third, the culturalobstacles experienced by organizational learning, which blocks out the socialmanagement development. Fourth and last, shows some possible initiatives forovercoming the identified barriers. Among them: the production of ethnographicresearch and also that the promotion of some researches with multidisciplinaryteams. It’s expected that the studies association focused on cognitive and socialpractice approach would be an alternative, due to the possibility of complementarysense of work, englobing social, historical and cognitive aspects.

Abstract: Scintillators are high-density luminescent materials that convert X-rays to visible light. Thallium doped cesium iodide (CsI:Tl) scintillation materials are widely used as converters for X-rays into visible light, with very high conversion efficiency of 64.000 optical photons/MeV. CsI:Tl crystals are commercially available, but, the possibility of developing these crystals into different geometric shapes, meeting the need for coupling the photosensor and reducing cost, makes this material very attractive for scientific research. The objective of this work was to study the feasibility of using radiation sensors, scintillators type, developed for use in imaging systems for X-rays. In this paper, the CsI:Tl scintillator crystal with nominal concentration of the 10-3 M was grown by the vertical Bridgman technique. The imaging performance of CsI:Tl scintillator was studied as a function of the design type and thickness, since it interferes with the light scattering and, hence, the detection efficiency plus final image resolution. The result of the diffraction X-ray analysis in the grown crystals was consistent with the pattern of a face-centered cubic (fcc) crystal structure. Slices 25 × 2 × 3 mm3 (length, thickness, height) of the crystal and mini crystals of 1 × 2 × 3 mm3 (length, thickness, height) were used for comparison in the imaging systems for X-rays. With these crystals scintillators, images of undesirable elements, such as metals in food packaging, were obtained. One-dimensional array of photodiodes and the photosensor CCD (Coupled Charge Device) component were used. In order to determine the ideal thickness of the slices of the scintillator crystal CsI:Tl, Monte Carlo method was used.

Abstract: contemporary society is marked by the presence of institutions that organize, regulate and govern the social relations of work. while institutions can be designed individually, they also have the ability to organize into networks that aim to strengthen intra and inter- institutions. given this context, the aim here is to perform a theoretical incursion into public administration, institutionalism and social capital, showing the possible conceptual interfaces in order to elucidate the contributions of institutional and social capital to better understand contemporary public administration. on the one hand, the theory of social capital promotes understanding of the set of investments that are channeled into socioeconomic and cultural activities to meet specific social needs arising from organized groups in civil society. thus, according to the assumptions of the capital, people interact with each other for access to public resources in order to achieve the collective targeting of several common interests. meanwhile, institutionalism sets out on the assumption that any institution that is formally constituted and legitimately recognized by the legal attributes of society loses when the reason for the logic of its constitution can no longer be any more effective than individual action alone. finally, the discussions surrounding the themes of social capital, institutional and public administration models invite us to reflect on the changes that take place in modern societies, especially regarding forms of government and trends in relations between state and society that take place in a globalized world.
