MEDISAN , 2013,
A descriptive and prospective study was carried out in 556 patients with inguinal hernia, who underwent outpatient surgical treatment in "Saturnino Lora" Provincial Teaching Hospital of Santiago de Cuba, from January 2010 to December 2012, in order to identify the results by means of hernial repair techniques (facial and aponeurotic) and the use of bioprosthesis. Men of 60 years and over with indirect inguinal hernia and infiltrating local anesthesia predominated in the case material. The most used surgical techniques were the fascial ones, without tension, as herniorrhaphy or hernioplasty, with polypropylene mesh and few relapses.

Abstract: The use of sodium chloride (0.5 g/L and 1 g/L) and zeolite (22.7 g/L) during shipment (48 h) of Ancistrus triradiatus at high temperatures (between 24.5 and 34oC) were evaluated. Several water quality parameters (dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, and total ammonia) were measured before and after shipment. Glycemia was measured before shipment and at 24 and 48 h after shipment. After shipment, a resistance test was carried out in a high concentration of sodium chloride, and mortality was recorded after shipment, and 7 days post-shipment. While the two evaluated substances increased survival of A. triradiatus challenged by high temperatures during shipment, the best result was obtained with 1 g/L of sodium chloride.

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1998,
Abstract: The kinetoplastid membrane protein 11 (KMP-11) has been recently described in Leishmania (Leishmania) donovani as a major component of the promastigote membrane. Two oligonucleotide primers were synthesized to PCR-amplify the entire coding region of New World Leishmania species. The Leishmania (Viannia) panamensis amplification product was cloned, sequenced and the putative amino acid sequence determined. A remarkably high degree of sequence homology was observed with the corresponding molecule of L. (L) donovani and L. (L) infantum (97% and 96%, respectively). Southern blot analysis showed that the KMP-11 locus is conformed by three copies of the gene. The L. (V) panamensis ORF was subsequently cloned in a high expression vector and the recombinant protein was induced and purified from Escherichia coli cultures. Immunoblot analysis showed that 80%, 77% and 100% sera from cutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis patients, respectively, recognized the recombinant KMP-11 protein. In a similar assay, 86% of asymptomatic Leishmania-infected individuals showed IgG antibodies against the rKMP-11. We propose that KMP-11 could be used as a serologic marker for infection and disease caused by Leishmania in America.

Abstract: The work al-Dhakhīra al-saniyya fī ta’rīkh al-dawla al-marīniyya records the history of the Marīnid dynasty, including a number of references to other Islamic regions like Egypt, Syria and al-Andalus. The authorship of this chronicle has not yet been solved. The aim of this paper is to provide the most relevant information on the issue. Alongside with other type of information concerning al-Andalus, this paper focuses on that which concerns the territory conquered by the Kingdom of Castile throughout the 13th century, and which so far has been mostly disregarded. It undoubtedly contributes to improve our knowledge of the period, especially as regards both the destiny of the conquered Muslim populations and the chronology of the conquest. We will also focus here on the political leaders of al-Andalus and Maghreb, their reactions towards the Christian conquests, ranging from utter resistance to conversion, and the importance this group attached to fighting the Christians, as a key factor of the political legitimacy of the Banū Marīn to guide the Islamic community, a point that greatly concerns the author of the present chronicle.
