Reorganizando a modernidade
Domingues, José Maurício;
Lua Nova: Revista de Cultura e Política , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-64451998000300009
Abstract: some ideas about a reorganization of modernity (such as anthony giddens "gerative politics") wich present alternatives both to privatist individualism and to a excessively state-oriented concept of solidarity such as found in the welfare state are discussed.
Institui??es formais, cidadania e solidariedade complexa
Domingues, José Maurício;
Lua Nova: Revista de Cultura e Política , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-64452006000100002
Abstract: this article aims at some problems of the traditional poliarchic republicanism in brazil, searching solutions for its difficulties on the issues of representation and participation. not meant as a normative proposal, the article just enquiries alternatives which, at this moment, can not be more than probings. the core of these enquiries points out to the formation of a "complex solidarity" in contemporary brazil.
Ashis Nandy e as vicissitudes do self: crítica, subjetividade e civiliza??o indiana
Domingues, José Maurício;
Mana , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-93132010000100002
Abstract: this paper examines the work of ashis nandy, one of indian's foremost contemporary intellectuals, a social psychologist, psychoanalyst and political scientist, responsible for developing what he calls a ‘critical traditionalism.' adopting a broad conception of indian civilization in which modernity poses an explicit threat (and, more ambiguously, an implicit element), nandy's discussion of personality and the individual is crucial at various levels - in particular theoretical - to understanding india and developing a theory of civilization. one of the prominent features of his discussion is the multiple composition of the self and its relations to both indian and western civilizations.
O confucianismo e a china de hoje
Domingues,José Maurício;
Análise Social , 2010,
Abstract: confucianism is returning to the fore in china today in intellectual terms, and has been adopted by the chinese government as an element of legitimization. the works of daniel bell allow for a closer view of the potentialities and limits of this ?new confucianism?, which must, however, be placed into the more general process of contemporary chinese culture, and of the developments of modernity as a global civilization.
Vida cotidiana, história e movimentos sociais
Domingues, José Maurício;
Dados , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0011-52582003000300002
Abstract: this article aims to discuss the relationship between daily life and history. the analysis is developed in three stages: situating the issue of daily life in one of its principal expressions in sociology; focusing on phenomenology, in particular its concept of "horizon", which i believe provides one of the keys for solving this theoretical problem; and finally seeking to relate this discussion more directly to the theoretical field of social systems, principally to the theory of social movements, since the latter have been viewed in modernity as prime inductors of historical change. the article focuses especially on the movements in this period of marked globalization, but also on the broader processes along the same lines. the theory of collective subjectivity furnishes the general underpinnings for the paper's argument.
Modernidade, complexidade e articula??o mista
Domingues, José Maurício;
Dados , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0011-52582001000200001
Abstract: debates on the organization of modernity articulated by the state (which succeeded 19th-century liberal modernity and was immersed in a crisis in the 1970s and 80s) failed to reach a conclusion. rather than resuming post-modernist ideas, this article develops the thesis that we are now in the midst of a third stage of modernity, resulting from that crisis and characterized by more evolutive complexity and mixed articulation. this stage, together with other more contingent and fluid forms of sociability, rests on three principles: market, hierarchy (within corporations and the state), and network. the example of contemporary procedural law is used both as an index of reality and hence to introduce the discussion of those three stages of development in modernity.
Sociologia da cultura, memória e criatividade social
Domingues, José Maurício;
Dados , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0011-52581999000200004
Abstract: social memory and social creativity are the two processes by which social systems are reproduced and change without teleology. the collective dimension of social memory, which displays both ideal elements and material forms, should be underscored, without, however, disregarding the changeable, personalized ways individuals can deal with this memory. social memory provides patterns for structuring social life in its hermeneutic-cognitive, material, and spatial-temporal dimensions. social creativity is responsible for the innovations introduced in daily life and history. while creativity is to a large extent rooted in the fluid unconscious of individuals, it requires rational thought to achieve greater impact on social life. immersed in indeterminate social interactions, social action is mediated by variably (de)centered collective subjectivities that have a specific property, that is, collective causality. social creativity is thus developed at both levels, individual and collective.
Domina??o e indiferen?a na teoria crítica de Gabriel Cohn
Domingues, José Maurício;
Dados , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0011-52582011000300006
Abstract: this article reconstructs the theoretical trajectory of gabriel cohn, whose work can be divided broadly into two phases. in the first, particularly under the influence of adorno and weber, modernity is viewed from the angle of domination and a tendency towards the construction of oppressively inclusive systems. in the second, maintaining these fundamentals, the issues of "pluralism" and indifference (particularly with a critical reading of luhmann) are perceived as shaping a new pattern of civilization. cohn thus proves to be a fundamental theoretical reference for understanding modernity in both its initial and contemporary phases.
A dialética da moderniza??o conservadora e a nova história do Brasil
Domingues, José Maurício;
Dados , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0011-52582002000300005
Abstract: in this article, we propose that the so-called "conservative modernization" has been completed in brazil. dialectically, success led to overcoming both the conservative modernization itself and the "regulated order" before a new integrative institutional frame could be fully developed. in advancing this argument, we review the recent literature on the agrarian issue and the political-institutional evolution of brazil, in addition to an overall perspective of the theory of modernization and citizenship. furthermore, we propose that there is no reason to imagine the prevalence of a homogenous modernity, which would only reproduce in brazil what can be found elsewhere. consequently, we propound that, in contemporary brazil, we find a specific modernity in which stands out the neo-thomist tradition of the country.
