Visualizing Fit between Dengue and Climatic Variables on Capitals of the Brazilian Northeast Region by Generalized Additive Models  [PDF]
Julio Cesar Barreto da Silva, Hugo Abi Karam, Carlos José Saldanha Machado
Open Journal of Epidemiology (OJEpi) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ojepi.2018.84020
Abstract: Recent analysis indicates that the numbers of dengue cases may be as high as 400 million/year in the world. According to the Ministry of Brazilian Health, in 2015, there were 1,621,797 probable cases of dengue in the country including all classifications except discarded, the highest number recorded in the historical series since 1990. Many studies have found associations between climatic conditions and dengue transmission, especially using generalized models. In this study, Generalized Additive Models (GAM) was used associated to visreg package to understand the effect of climatic variables on capitals of Northeast Brazilian, from 2001 to 2012. From 12 climatic variables, it was verified that the relative humidity was the one that obtained the highest correlation to dengue. Afterwards, GAM associated with visreg was applied to understand the effects between them. Relative humidity explains the dengue incidence at an adjusted rate of 78.0% (in São Luis-MA) and 82.3% (in Teresina-PI) delayed in, respectively, -1 and -2 months.
Quem é quem diante da presen?a de espécies exóticas no Brasil? Uma leitura do arcabou?o institucional-legal voltada para a formula??o de uma Política Pública Nacional
Oliveira, Anderson Eduardo da Silva;Machado, Carlos José Saldanha;
Ambiente & Sociedade , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-753X2009000200011
Abstract: this study aims to contribute to the formulation of a national public policy of control of exotic species, through the characterization of the brazilian legal-institutional framework. after an extensive reading of the document, we concluded that there are obstacles to the construction of this public policy, and we also recognize the need of an urgent definition and structuring of a coordination of the agents of different sectors, assuring the consistency of the actions and the practical efficiency of this policy.
Ensaio de longa dura??o com calcário e cloreto de potássio na cultura do algodoeiro

Bragantia , 1995, DOI: 10.1590/S0006-87051995000200014
Abstract: a long term split-plot field trial with cotton was initiated in 1976, with four limestone rates (0, 2, 4 and 6 t/ha) in the main plots and four yearly applied rates of potassium in the subplots (0, 50, 100, 150 kg/ha of k2o as kcl), in a distrofic dusk red latosol, at guaíra, state of s?o paulo, brazil. after five years liming was reapplied. the soil ph and base saturation in the plow layer increased fastly after re-liming, and decreased down to previous rates two years later, due to an intensive ca and mg leaching to the subsoil layers. potassium effect on cotton yield was more evident with liming. potassium deficiency symptoms were noted in plants from the limed plots with no k-fertilization. in the abscence of liming, the highest k rate promoted plant injury. a 90% index of the maximum expected yield was reached in presence of k-fertilization and when the soil base saturation increased up to 60% in the plow layer and 40% in the subsoil layers (20-40 and 40-60 cm depths).
Construtivismo, psicologia experimental e neurociência
Vasconcellos, Silvio José Lemos;Machado, Simone da Silva;
Psicologia Clínica , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-56652006000100007
Abstract: the main objective of this article is to discuss the constructivism approach and its relations with some discovers related to the experimental psychology and neuroscience. the text was drawn up based on consulting scientific publications indexed in psycinfo and textbooks related to the mentioned fields. the authors also argument that the effectiveness of different models of cognitive therapy can be improvement through a work with non-rational aspects of the human cognition. in the final part of this article, the authors emphasize the necessity to transform the constructivism in an appropriate metaphor for the cognitive therapy. this assumption is based on the meichenbaum's affirmations (1993).
Heterosis expression in crosses between maize populations: ear yield
Silva, Ricardo Machado da;Miranda Filho, José Branco de;
Scientia Agricola , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-90162003000300016
Abstract: the phenomenon of heterosis has been exploited extensively in maize (zea mays l.) breeding. the objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic potential of ten maize populations for ear yield following the diallel mating scheme. six parental populations were obtained through phenotypic selection of open-pollinated ears in rio verde, go, brazil, (go populations) and four parental populations were synthesized in piracicaba, sp, brazil (gn populations): go-d (dentado), go- f (flint), go-a (amarelo), go-b (branco), go-l (longo), go-g (grosso), gn-01, gn-02, gn-03 and gn-04. experiments were carried out in three environments: anhembi (sp) and rio verde (go) in 1998/99 (normal season crop) and piracicaba (sp) in 1999 (off-season crop). all experiments were in completely randomized blocks with six replications. analysis of variance grouped over environments showed high significance for heterosis and its components, although mid-parent heterosis and average heterosis were of low expression. the interaction treatments x environments was not significant. total mid-parent heterosis effects ranged from de -4.3% to 17.3% with an average heterosis of 3.37%. population with the highest yield (7.4 t ha-1) and with the highest effect of population (vi = 0.746) was gn-03, while the highest yielding cross was go-b x gn-03 with 7,567 t ha-1. the highest specific heterosis effect (sii' = 0.547) was observed in the cross go-b x gn-03.
Macrobenthic invertebrates as food for a penaeid shrimp pond farm in Brazil
Paiva,Paulo Cesar de; Machado Cunha da Silva,José Roberto;

Abstract: background: o gastroesophageal reflux is a high prevalent disease with prevalence rates ranging from 21 to 56% in different countries. objective: to study the epidemiology and the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease among adult population (20 years and old) at the city of pelotas, southern brazil. methodology: a population-based cross-sectional study was conducted. household interviews were done between october 1999 and january 2000. association between gastroesophageal reflux disease and age, sex, skin color, years of formal education, income per capita, marital status, psychological variables (insomnia, stressful psychosocial events in the last year, psychological distress), body mass index, smoking and weekly consumption of alcoholic beverages was assessed through logistic regression. results: three thousands and nine-hundred thirty four3.934 individuals were interviewed. a prevalence of 31,3% (ci 95% 29.9%-32.8%). after allowing for confounding gastroesophageal reflux disease was significantly associated with female sex, living without partner, low level of formal education, insomnia, psychological distress, reported stressful psychosocial events in the last year, obesity and overweight. conclusion: gastroesophageal reflux disease is a high prevalent disease and its main associated factors are sex, anthropometric variables and psychological characteristics.
