Abstract: Introduction. Catharanthus roseus (L.) is used in some countries to treat diabetes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hypoglycemic activity of extracts from the flower, leaf, stem, and root in normal and alloxan-induced diabetic mice. Methods. Roots, leaves, flowers, and stems were separated to obtain organic and aqueous extracts. The blood glucose lowering activity of these extracts was determinate in healthy and alloxan-induced (75 mg/Kg) diabetic mice, after intraperitoneal administration (250 mg/Kg body weight). Blood samples were obtained and blood glucose levels were analyzed employing a glucometer. The data were statistically compared by ANOVA. The most active extract was fractioned. Phytochemical screen and chromatographic studies were also done. Results. The aqueous extracts from C. roseus reduced the blood glucose of both healthy and diabetic mice. The aqueous stem extract (250 mg/Kg) and its alkaloid-free fraction (300 mg/Kg) significantly () reduced blood glucose in diabetic mice by 52.90 and 51.21%. Their hypoglycemic activity was comparable to tolbutamide (58.1%, ). Conclusions. The best hypoglycemic activity was presented for the aqueous extracts and by alkaloid-free stem aqueous fraction. This fraction is formed by three polyphenols compounds.

Abstract: This paper analyzes the systemic properties of the interaction that takes place in governance networks. We identify four basic properties: individual autonomy of participants, political autonomy of the network, interdependence of its members, and dynamism. We also analyze four integrative and decision-making mechanisms and processes: trust, translation, negotiation and deliberation. Our main conclusion is that to function adequately, networks must achieve a delicate balance among these four elements.

Abstract: in this study it was evaluated the process of composting from poultry manure, and the effect of the mixture with different proportions of cellulose material on the chemical and physical composition of compost. a process of fermentation in mobile pile was evaluated with capacity of 621 m3/pile. some samples were daily taken in order to measure temperature, humidity and ph, at the end of the process physical and chemical analysis were made in order to determine the quality of the product, which was analyzed according to the ntc 5167 about organic fertilizers in colombia. a design was made complete/y at random (dca) with a witness group identified as "blanco" and three treatments with two replicas for each one, a mixture of poultry manure and sawdust plus wood shavings with a relation c/n of 21:1 (t1 current condition "blanco"), 25:1 (12), 27.5:1 (t3) and 30:1 (t4) respectively. the process of composting was produced during 45 days for every treatment. as for humidity, no treatment reached the value established by the ntc 5167 (<20%). in the same way in the scale of ph a rising is showed which reports values over 8.5 in every treatment, which confirms the instability of the compost at the end of the process. the values in the relationship carbon/nitrogen were adapted, in the four treatments, to this kind of organic fertilizer, these four treatments also presented acceptable values according to the ntc 5167, a capacity of water retention, apparent density ashes and organic matter. the capacity of cationic exchange presented significant differences (p< 0.05) to the treatment t4, which according to the ntc 5167 should be minimum of 30 meq/10ogr, alternative that did not achieve this valur because of the excess of cellulose material present in the womb of the process which leads to a decrease of the biological activity due to the lack ofnutrients in its environment.

Abstract: Impedance measurements were performed on an AISI 316L stainless steel immersed in a 5% NaCl solution at room temperature. Some samples were polarized up to the passive and pitting regions, respectively. The Nyquist plots in the rest potential and in the passive region show high impedance with capacitive behaviour. The impedance diagram in the pitting region shows three loops: a capacitive loop at high frequencies, a loop with inductive effects at intermediate frequencies, and a second capacitive response at low frequencies. To validate the impedance data Kramers-Kronig relations were applied in the pitting región.
Approximate reconstruction of bandlimited functions for the integrate and fire sampler

Physics , 2009,
Abstract: In this paper we study the reconstruction of a bandlimited signal from samples generated by the integrate and fire model. This sampler allows us to trade complexity in the reconstruction algorithms for simple hardware implementations, and is specially convenient in situations where the sampling device is limited in terms of power, area and bandwidth. Although perfect reconstruction for this sampler is impossible, we give a general approximate reconstruction procedure and bound the corresponding error. We also show the performance of the proposed algorithm through numerical simulations.
