Abstract: A previous study conducted in 1998 assessed yearly nutrient discharge by the Sinaloa and Sonora shrimp farms to the coastal areas of the Gulf of California (1,509.4 and 438.7 tons of N and P corresponding to 2.1 and 1.05% of the total nutrient discharges to the Gulf along those two states coastlines). However, that estimate did not take into account other nutrient sources, nor the high daily water exchanges of the farms of Sonora, that are likely to increase the calculated amount of nutrients discharged. The evaluation of the nutrient budget of one semi-intensive shrimp farm of Sonora, including the nutrient sources not measured in other studies, showed that during one production cycle this farm discharged 547 kg N·ha-1 and 73 kg P·ha-1, with respective net exports of 122 kg N·ha-1 and 14 kg P·ha-1. Based on the results of this study, the recalculated totals for Sinaloa and Sonora, including rivers, agricultural runoff, and urban wastewater were 77,007.7 and 38,108.3 tons of N and P, and those of shrimp farms 3,556 tons of N and 620.7 tons of P (4.8 and 1.6%). The total discharges of 2003 may be estimated at 78,798.2 and 38,874.1 tons of N and P. In view of its high groth rate, the contributions of shrimp culture would be 10.1% and 3.3%. En un estudio llevado a cabo en 1998, se evaluó la cantidad de nutrientes descargada anualmente hacia las áreas costeras del Golfo de California por las granjas camaroneras de Sinaloa y Sonora en 1998 (1,509.4 ton de N y 438.7 ton de P, equivalentes a 2.1 y 1.05% del total de las descargas de ambos estados). Sin embargo, esta estimación no incluyó otras fuentes de ni los altos porcentajes de recambio diario de agua que se usan en Sonora pueden causar un incremento en la cantidad de nutrientes descargados. La evaluación del balance de N y de P de una granja de cultivo semi-intensivo de camarón ubicada en Sonora, para la cual se tomaron en cuenta algunas fuentes no consideradas en otros balances, demostraron que durante un ciclo de producción la granja descargó 547 kg de N·ha-1 y 73 kg P·ha-1, con descargas netas de 122 kg N·ha-1 y 14 kg P·ha-1. Con base en estos resultados las descargas totales de Sinaloa y Sonora, incluyendo ríos, agricultura y las aguas urbanas, fueron 77,007.7 y 38,108.3 ton de N y P, respectivamente; siendo las contribuciones de la camaronicultura de 3,556 tons de N y 620.7 tons de P (4.8 y 1.6%). El total de las descargas para 2003 se puede estimar en 78,798.2 y 38,874.1 ton de N y de P. En vista de su rápido crecimiento, las contribuciones de la camaronicultura se calcularon en 10.1% y 3.3%.

Abstract: two populations of crassostrea iridescens were sampled off mazatlan and in a zone free of anthropogenic activity. the bivalves were collected from february 1992 to february 1993. concentrations of cd, co, cr, cu, fe, mn, ni and zn were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. annual mean values in the sampling zone off mazatlan were higher in co, cu, fe, mn, ni and zn than in the sampling zone free of anthropogenic activity; however, differences were not statistically significant at 95% confidence level. urban discharges in the coastal zone in front of mazatlan city, have little or no heavy metal concentrations dissolved or particulated.

Dos poblaciones de Crassostrea iridescens fueron muestreadas en la zona costera de la ciudad de Mazatlan y en una zona libre de actividad antropogénica. Los bivalvos fueron colectados de febrero de 1992 a febrero de 1993. Concentraciones de Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni y Zn fueron determinados por espectrofotometría de absorción atómica. Los valores medios anuales en la estación de muestreo de la ciudad de Mazatlán fueron mayores en Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni y Zn que los determinados en la zona libre de actividad antropogénica; sin embargo, las diferencias no fueron significativas al nivel de confianza del 95%. Una conclusión es que las descargas urbanas en la zona costera en frente de Mazatlán no tiene, o tiene, bajas concentraciones de metales pesados disueltos o particulados.

Abstract: abstract litopenaeus vannamei is the most important shrimp species in the traditional fishery of the coastal lagoons of the state of sinaloa (nw mexico), and most of the landings are consumed locally. since these lagoons receive important volumes of agricultural, industrial and urban effluents, consumption of this shrimp could pose risks to human health. the mean content of cd, cu, pb and zn determined in the hepatopancreas of shrimp from commercial landings from six lagoons of sinaloa were higher than those of the muscle. there was a weak correlation between the zn content of the two tissues (p≤0.05) and the correlations were not significant for cd, cu and pb (p>0.1). the concentrations found in the shrimp muscle were comparable or lower than those determined in commercial landings of different crustaceans from other geographic areas. according to our results the consumption of local shrimp poses no risks to human health.

Abstract: juveniles of the white shrimp litopenaeus vannamei were exposed during 25 days to the cu2+ concentration commonly used in mexican shrimp farms, at salinities of 1, 5, and 10 psu, in order to observe possible histological alterations to the antennal glands, midgut, gills and hepatopancreas. survival was 100% in controls and treatments, and no histopathologies were observed in gills, midgut and antennal glands. sloughing of epithelial cells (< 75%), infiltration of hemocytes (< 75%) and reduction in r and b cells (100%) were observed after 10 days in the hepatopancreas of shrimps exposed to cu2+ at the lowest salinity and, to a lower degree, at salinities of 5 and 10 psu. this should be taken into consideration to establish criteria of acceptable water quality for inland aquaculture, because the interaction metal-salinity may induce adverse shrimp responses.

Abstract: The spectral fluorescence characteristics of extracts leaves embedded in silica xerogel matrix promoted by aged time was studied. We obtain a higher PSII stability for extract of leaves embedded in xerogel matrix, with concentration of 8 g / 20 ml and water to TEOS molar ratio of 11, which remain bioactive over a very long period of time, whereas for a water to TEOS molar ratio of 5 a blue-shift fluorescence is observed indicating the PSII denaturizing and formation of fluorescing aggregates associated with the activation of carotenoids radicals.

Abstract: This work studied the thermostability and the biostability of chlorophyll species obtained from an extract of spinach leaves embedded in a silica xerogel matrix. The analysis was done by monitoring the photosystem II (PSII) using fluorescence spectroscopy. Samples were prepared using the sol gel method with a molar ratio of ethanol/H2O/TEOS of 4:11.6:1. Then, silica xerogel matrix was loaded with an extract of spinach leaves, obtained in dark conditions. The measurement of the fluorescence spectra was done at selected temperatures to the corresponding non-physiological regimen. Results indicate that the PSII band position remains unchanged when heat treatment temperature increases up 200°C. For temperatures above 100?C, the fluorescence intensity diminishes linearly when the temperature increases. The photosystem II embedded in silica xerogel matrix is decomposed at temperatures above 200°C.

Abstract: Measurement of the fluorescence comportment of Bougainvillea xbuttiana flowers embedded in silica xerogels matrix prepared with two different water to tetraethyl-orthosilicate [Si(OC2H5)4] ratio molar of 11 and 5, without heat-treatment, we report the grade of biostability of compound. The structural comportment for the PSI and PSII present in Bougainvillea flower is similar to the structural comportment for these photosystems present in leaves when they are incorporated on inorganic matrix such as silica xerogels. The contribution of the natural pigment of this kind of flower such as betalains which consist of betaxanthins and betacyanins, determines their colors contributed in the range of wavelength from about 550 nm to 660 nm.
