Abstract: the scientific advances in genomics open the door to human fears. for this reason, the human genome project, hgp, has been the first great international research project that has had as subproject the associated ethical, legal, and social issues (elsi). this bioethical worry arose as answer to the ethical and social questions that appearing in relation to the genomic advances. genomics is shown as the key that will reveal the mystery of being (aldine’s lamp) or as tool of ecological destruction, as genetic determinism, as eugenic, that is to say, as pandora’s box. the hgp possesses an incalculable value for the diagnosis of new diseases, new medicines and new therapies, but it also brings some risks and fears that must be studied and analyze from a larger perspective than the scientifictechnical, that is to say, as bioethical reflection genomics
La construcción de la modernidad: metáfora y política en dos discursos de Marcos Pérez Jiménez (1953-1957)
Olivar,José Alberto;
Letras , 2010,
Abstract: a lot has been written about the governance regime in venezuela between 1948 and 1958, particularly about its main representative figure, marcos pérez jiménez, who played an important role during that decade dominated by the national military force. this essay aims at offering new interpretations following, on the one side, the guidelines of critical discourse analysis (cda) as stated by ruth wodak, michael meyer and teun van dijk, and on the other, the analysis of metaphor use on the basis of the studies of george lakoff, mark johnson and thays adrián. to do so, two speeches of general marcos pérez jiménez are taken as sample. the speeches were delivered in two different moments and circumstances, so that we can approach the study of the metaphor as linguistic strategy and its function in legitimation and ideologization of political models that attempt to impose hegemony on society. among the conclusions of this study, the scarce presence of war metaphors is to be highlighted in contrast to the repeated use of a metaphoric language of a rather technical nature linked to construction.

O coul?metro de sódio: um experimento interessante de eletroquímica
Bonapace, José Alberto P.;
Química Nova , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422004000400024
Abstract: the diffusion of sodium through glass, the basis of a sodium coulometer, was revised and modified for the application to present-day light bulbs. low pressure inert gas-filled incandescent lamps are useless to attain satisfactory results. the inclusion of a 450 v power supply in series with the electrolysis cell provided sufficient potential to overcome the effect of the inert gas molecules inside the bulb.
Paradigmas e cogni??es no campo da administra??o educacional: das políticas de avalia??o à avalia??o como política
Correia, José Alberto;
Revista Brasileira de Educa??o , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-24782010000300005
Abstract: in the last two decades, the mechanisms and instruments of evaluation have acquired an increasing importance in the field of educational administration. since they cannot be dissociated from the process of erosion of the educative state, the current mechanisms of evaluation do not propose themselves only as more efficient mechanisms of regulation, considering that they are supported by a more detailed knowledge of the field. this article admits that evaluation produces the field that it evaluates, and proposes an analysis of the main tendencies in the constitution of this field, situated on the political, cognitive and institutional levels. in the political sphere, the text comments on the process of disqualification of the contextualized political debate and the unprecedented affirmation of an book keeping definition of education, in which the work of decontextualization and the reflection on the efficiency of the means are emphasized above all else. on the cognitive plane, the text debates the knowledge and lack of knowledge produced by the evaluation designed to emphasize the reification of the educative persons and their relations, who are thus deprived of their specific educative qualities. on the institutional plane, the text emphasizes both the processes of production of new institutional figures as well as the processes of redistribution of social responsibilities for the failures of schooling. it concludes by making explicit some frameworks that are susceptible to configuring an alternative paradigm that, by not being normative, is concerned with the rehabilitation of the lack of knowledge produced by the paradigm of evaluation, valuing, above all, the epistemological, institutional and cognitive mediations.
Conceito e diagnóstico
Del Porto, José Alberto;
Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-44461999000500003
Abstract: this paper reviews the concept of depression and the contemporary nosology of depressive states with their different subtypes. course (acute vs chronic depressions, seasonal pattern) and phenomenological characteristics (melancholic, atypical, psychotic and catatonic features) are discussed, as well as the importance and meaning of psychomotor disturbance for the diagnosis of the so-called "endogenous" or "vital" depression, in accordance with contemporary authors (parker and widl?cher). this paper also discusses the boundaries of depression with bipolar disorder, personality disorders, demoralisation and normal feelings of sadness, as well as the limits with other clinical diseases and drug induced conditions.
Evolu??o do conceito e controvérsias atuais sobre o transtorno bipolar do humor
Del Porto, José Alberto;
Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-44462004000700002
Abstract: the author reviews the evolution of the concept of bipolar disorder as an ongoing process. its roots can be found in the work of araeteus of capadocia, who assumed that melancholia and mania were two forms of the same disease. the modern understanding of bipolar disorder began in france, through the work of falret (1851) and baillarger (1854). the pivotal concepts of emil kraepelin changed the basis of psychiatric nosology, and kraepelin's unitary concept of manic-depressive insanity was largely accepted. kraepelin and weigandt's ideas on mixed states were the cornerstone of this unitary concept. after kraepelin, however, the ideas of kleist and leonhard, in germany, as well as the work of angst, perris and winokur, emphasized the distinction between unipolar and bipolar forms of depression. more recently, the emphasis has shifted again to the bipolar spectrum, which, in its mild forms, expanded to the limits of normal temperament. in concluding, the author summarizes the polemic aspects concerning the nosology of bipolar disorder and its boundaries in comparison with those of with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorders and cycloid psychosis
A engenharia genética
Candeias,José Alberto Neves;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1991, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101991000100002
Abstract: this paper deals with the progress made in genetic engineering techniques, capable of altering the genetic potential of an organism, either by the introduction or the suppression of new structural genes. some of the general applications are described as are also, more particularly, their uses in the field of medicine. a critical analysis of the benefits and risks involved is also undertaken.
Isolamento e identifica??o intratípica de cêpas de poliovirus associadas com a administra??o de vacina Sabin
Candeias,José Alberto Neves;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1969, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101969000200008
Abstract: the author studied the incidence of enterovirus excretion in 2 groups of children aged between 1 and 4 years, who had been given varying doses of sabin polio vaccine. in the first group faeces were collected 60 days and in the second group 15 days after the last dose of vaccine had been given. in the first group 12,12% yielded poliovirus and 13,63% yielded "other enteroviruses"; in the second group the percentages were 37,61% and 9,17%. in both groups all three serological types of poliovirus were isolated. the previous vaccination status of the children in both groups, whether vaccinated with two or less or three or more doses, did not have a statistically significant effect on the subsequent virus isolations. the strains of poliovirus isolated were examined by the rtc40 and dextran markers. of the 8 strains isolated from the first group 6 were identified as intermediate strains and 2 as wild strains. these 2 were isolated from the only 2 children who had received no vaccine at all. of the 41 strains isolated from the second group 8 were intermediate and the rest were typical vaccine strains.
Anticorpos fixadores de complemento para o vírus respiratório sincicial e adenovírus e inibidores da hemaglutina??o para os vírus parainfluenza 1, 2 e 3 numa popula??o infantil brasileira
Candeias,José Alberto Neves;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1968, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101968000100005
Abstract: the author presents the results of a survey for respiratory syncytial virus and adenovirus complement fixing antibodies and parainfluenza viruses 1, 2, 3 haemagglutination inhibition antibodies in a group of 972 chidren between 3 months and 14 years of age. the filter paper method of collecting whole blood was used. altogether, the percentage of children with complement fixing antibodies against respiratory syncytial virus and adenovirus were respectively 34.6% and 47.7%; 46.8%, 54.1% and 66.6% possessed haemagglutination inhibition antibodies against parainfluenza vírus types 1, 2 and 3. a study on the distribution of the antibodies according to different age groups was also conducted. the present study was undertaken, in order, to examine the distribution of antibodies according to sex and home localization. the following results were obtained: 32.3% of the boys possessed antibodies against respiratory syncytial virus, 49.2% against adenovirus and 60.1%, 65.5% and 78.3% against parainfluenza viruses 1, 2,3 respectively; percentages in girls were 37.4%, 45.9%, 31.1'%, 41.2% and 52.9% respectively. in the rural area 44.8% of the children possessed antibodies against respiratory syncytial vírus, 70.1% against adenovirus, 43.8% against parainfluenza vírus type 1 and 46.8% and 65.4% against parainfluenza viruses 2, 3; in the urban area the percentages observed were, respectively, 30.5%, 38.7%, 47.9%, 57.1% and 67.1%.
