The single ventricle occurs in 1 x 6 500 births. It is associated with the transposition of great vessels and also with lung stenosis, among others. The clinical picture depends on the coexistent anomaly. Echocardiography 2-D (from apical approximation) was used to show the absence of intraventricular septum and rudimentary chamber in a 38 year old man, who was cyanotic since birth. The single ventricle is confirmed by angiocatheterism.

Abstract: venous thromboembolism is a serious complication that may follow fractures. the most commonly used anticoagulant treatment is low-molecular-weight heparin (lmwh). there are some studies showing that this drug may interfere on bone metabolism. with the objective of evaluating the lmwh influence on the process of bony callus formation, we conducted an experimental study on rats. sample was constituted of 22 wistar male rats, which were submitted to diaphyseal fracture on their right femurs. they were divided into two groups of 11 subjects each. in the control group, the animals received saline solution and in the study group, they received lmwh - enoxaparin - in a daily basis, during 28 days. after that period, the rats were submitted to euthanasia for femur assessment purposes. at the macroscopic study, union was verified in 11 animals (100%) not receiving enoxaparin, and in 10 animals (90.9%) receiving the study drug. at the histological study, the formation of bony callus was verified in all femurs. it was concluded by this experiment that enoxaparin does not cause changes on the bone union process in wistar rats' femurs.

Abstract: in brazil, no commercial tomato (solanum lycopersicum l. formerly lycopersicon esculentum mill.) varieties are available which are resistant to the late blight, one of the most important tomato diseases, produced by the phytopathogenic oomycete phytophthora infestans. the wild tomato (solanum habrochaites knapp & spooner, formerly lycopersicon hirsutum dunal) shows resistance to p. infestans, because of which we investigated an interspecific cross between s. lycopersicum cv. santa clara and s. habrochaites accession bgh 6902 maintained at the horticultural germplasm bank at the federal university of vi?osa (banco de germoplasma de horticultura (bgh), universidade federal de vi?osa (ufv), vi?osa, minas gerais, brazil) the genitors, f1, f2, bc1 and bc2 were used to study the inheritance of resistance to p. infestans and to estimate the genetic parameters associated with resistance. analysis of the area under the disease progress curve (audpc) indicated that inheritance is polygenic and that dominance controls character, whereas mean analysis showed that the additive effect was the most important. although the character presents variability, the heritability is low which generates the need to better control the environment to obtain success with the selection.

Abstract: the objectives in this study were: (i) the assessment of the transmission of blister spot(c. gloeosporioides) from seed to plant, and (ii) an observation study on the effect of seed treatment with fungicides used in the control of that disease. natural transmission of the fungus was studied in seeds collected from both healthy and diseased 'catucaí' coffee trees. the endocarp of the seeds was removed, and the seeds were sowed in sterilized sand substrate. the symptoms and the death process of hypocotyls were evaluated. additionally, the incidence of blister spot (c. gloeosporioides) was assessed through blotter test in both fungicide treated and untreated seeds. a large number of hypocotyl deaths in seeds obtained from blister spot trees were observed, whereas seeds collected from healthy trees produced healthy seedlings. a total of 5.2% of the seedlings from blister spot trees were apparently healthy. but after the completion of the development of the first pair of leaves, blister spot symptoms were observed. when treated with fungicides (benzimidazol + dimethyldithiocarbamate), seeds from blister spot and healthy trees were free of fungi. seeds collected from blister spot trees presented an incidence of 29.8% c. gloeosporioides , whereas seeds collected from healthy trees had an incidence of 1.2%. therefore, based on the results of this study, it was clear that seeds were the principle means of transmission of blister spot in coffee.

The diagnosis of cardiac tumors is found to be difficult when its main manifestations are non-specific constitutional symptoms. The case of a 58-year old woman who was admitted to hospital presenting with progressive weight loss, fever, and low intensity cardiac murmur (II-VI), is reported. By two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography a tumor mass in the left atrial wall (atrial myxoma) was detected; during diastole prolapsing towards the interior of the left ventricle. The clinical, immunological, and imaging elements of such tumors are pointed out.

Abstract: background: the brazilian public health system (sus) establishes that coronary angioplasties with implantation of two stents must not exceed 20% of the total amount of angioplasties performed, resulting in the necessity of staged procedures in the majority of the patients with multivessel coronary disease. the objective of this study was to compare the costs of the staged stent implantation policy, imposed by sus, with the stent implantation approach considered ideal by the interventional cardiology team, in patients with multivessel coronary disease. methods: costs were compared in a consecutive cohort of 100 patients with multivessel disease with indication of complete revascularization by percutaneous coronary intervention. coronary angiographies had been previously evaluated by the interventional cardiology team that had individualized the approach considered ideal for the treatment of each patient. procedures were then performed in accordance to sus multistage policy and the costs of the two treatment strategies were compared. of note, a single stent implantation procedure costs r$4,298.00 according to the sus price list. results: mean age was 61.5±10.7 years, 66% were male, 43% diabetics and 67% had stable angina. agreement in relation to the sus staged procedures occurred in 44% and discordance in 56%. an excess of 58 procedures was detected, generating an additional cost of r$131,298.00. conclusions: the multistaged approach imposed by sus increases the number of procedures for coronary stent implantation in patients with multivessel disease and consequently increments the public expenses.

Abstract: summary: the syndrome of androgen insensitivity is the first cause of masculine pseudohermafroditism. it has an incidence of 1 in 20 000 to 1 in 64 000 male newborns, represents 15% to 20% of the intersexual stages and the third cause of primary amenorrhea. it inheritance is recessive and linked to the x chromosome. the diagnostic of a case must motivate the investigation of the sisters and other relatives since it might be a familiar entity. the case of three youth sisters with syndrome of androgens insensitivity, that assisted to the pediatric and adolescence gynecology outpatient clinic of the children hospital "jm de los rios", is reported; the results are discussed and literature revised
Novela e historia
Cruz,José;

Abstract: abstract history and literature (specifically narrative) share a diegetic essence. both represent textual manifestations with similar communicative strategies. even historically, some cases have been confused to the extent to which the reader may not know whether they are dealing with history or with literature. fiction, credibility, the real and the recordable are the key elements, since they define what historiography is and, also, what can be inserted within the scope of literature. since aristotle?s poetics, some concern on this topic has been shown. during the last decades of the xx century in latin-america, some authors generated polemic discussion as they disregarded the importance of historic records (due to the manipulation of such records on the part of groups that exercised power) and conferred the faculty for reconstructing the past to literature. in this way, the usefulness of literature has been expanded beyond the traditionally established parameters.
