Abstract: En este trabajo se evalúa la capacidad de los datos de las bandas espectrales 2 y 3 del subsistema VNIR (Visible Near Infrared) y la banda espectral 4 del subsistema SWIR (Short Wave Infrared) del sensor ASTER, para estimar la superficie cultivada y los niveles de producción de ca a de azúcar en un área ubicada en el departamento Chicligasta de la provincia de Tucumán, Argentina. Se aplicó la metodología de clasificación multiespectral supervisada. Los resultados obtenidos fueron comparados con los generados con igual metodología utilizando los datos de las bandas 3, 4 y 5 del sensor TM del satélite Landsat 5. El análisis estadístico de la información disponible demostró que los datos del sensor ASTER, en sus bandas 2 y 3 del VNIR, poseen la capacidad de discriminar la superficie y los niveles de producción de ca a de azúcar en el área de estudio. De la comparación estadística de estos resultados con los de la imagen Landsat, resulta que la banda 3 de ASTER y 4 de Landsat poseen una significancia mayor para discriminar niveles de producción, que las bandas 2 y 3 de los respectivos sensores. Ante estos resultados, el sensor ASTER se muestra como una alternativa viable para la discriminación y cuantificación de la ca a de azúcar. In this work, data obtained by Visible Near Infrared (VNIR) bands 2 and 3 and Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) subsystem (band 4) of the ASTER sensor, were evaluated in terms of their potential use in estimating planted surface and production levels of a sugarcane growing area in Chicligasta, province of Tucumán, Argentina. The multiespectral supervised classification methodology was applied. The results were compared with the ones obtained by applying the same methodology to data provided by bands 3, 4 and 5 of Landsat 5 satellite TM sensor. Statistical analysis of the available information demonstrated that data supplied by VNIR bands 2 and 3 of the ASTER sensor allow discriminating sugarcane planted area and production levels in the region under observation. The statistical comparison of these results with the ones obtained with Landsat TM sensor indicated that band 3 of ASTER and band 4 of Landsat have a higher significance than bands 2 and 3 of both sensors for discriminating production levels. Moreover, by comparing them, it was possible to observe that band 3 of ASTER exhibited a better behaviour than band 4 of Landsat. These results show that the ASTER sensor constitutes a feasible alternative to identify and quantify sugarcane production.

Abstract: background: development of ankylosis in patients with chronic venous insufficiency (cvi) can be observed in different stages of the disease as the ankle range of motion is measured by a goniometer. objective: to relate a reduced ankle range of motion in patients with cvi of the lower limbs measured by goniometry and the severity of cvi according to the ceap classification. methods: from march 2003 to august 2004, 86 patients (67 females and 19 males) with a mean age of 50.6 years had their ankles assessed by a goniometer. patients were classified into three groups according to the severity of the cvi of the lower limbs (121 were assessed) using the ceap classification. there were 40 limbs classified as c0 (control group), 40 limbs as c3 and 41 limbs as c4. measurements of all groups were compared. results: the average ankle range of motion was 42.4o (from 26o to 54o) in c0 group, 37.9o (from 10o to 61o) in c3 group and 24.5o (from 8o to 50o) in group c4. the difference between c4 and c3 average values was 36% and that between c3 and the control group (c0) was 11%; thus, the contrast between c3 and c4 was more significant. conclusion: ankle goniometry may be used to assess chronic venous hypertension, as it reveals a correlation between the severity of ankylosis and the severity of cvi.

Depredación pre-dispersiva de semillas en tres poblaciones del árbol Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Fabaceae)

Abstract: Pre-dispersal seed predation in three populations of the tree Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Fabaceae). Searching iron sensors in plants by exploring the link among 2′-OG-dependent dioxygenases, the iron deficiency response and metabolic adjustments occurring under iron deficiency

Abstract: Knowledge accumulated on the regulation of iron (Fe) homeostasis, its intracellular trafficking and transport across various cellular compartments and organs in plants; storage proteins, transporters and transcription factors involved in Fe metabolism have been analyzed in detail in recent years. However, the key sensor(s) of cellular plant “Fe status” triggering the long-distance shoot–root signaling and leading to the root Fe deficiency responses is (are) still unknown. Local Fe sensing is also a major task for roots, for adjusting the internal Fe requirements to external Fe availability: how such sensing is achieved and how it leads to metabolic adjustments in case of nutrient shortage, is mostly unknown. Two proteins belonging to the 2′-OG-dependent dioxygenases family accumulate several folds in Fe-deficient Arabidopsis roots. Such proteins require Fe(II) as enzymatic cofactor; one of their subgroups, the HIF-P4H (hypoxia-inducible factor-prolyl 4-hydroxylase), is an effective oxygen sensor in animal cells. We envisage here the possibility that some members of the 2′-OG dioxygenase family may be involved in the Fe deficiency response and in the metabolic adjustments to Fe deficiency or even in sensing Fe, in plant cells.
RESPUESTA A LA DESECACIóN Y A LA TEMPERATURA DE ALMACENAMIENTO DEL GERMOPLASMA DE PROSOPIS NIGRA (GRISEBACH) HIERON. Y ZIZIPHUS MISTOL GRISEB.

Abstract: La conservación ex situ y a largo plazo de las semillas se basa en la respuesta a la desecación y a las temperaturas de almacenamiento, lo que constituye el objetivo de este trabajo. El contenido de humedad de las semillas frescas se determinó en estufa a 103°C y pesando las muestras a intervalos regulares hasta peso constante. La tolerancia a la desecación y a las temperaturas de almacenamiento se evaluaron con 5 experimentos de germinación: semillas frescas (10-12%CH); 3-5% CH; y 3-5% CH almacenadas tres meses a 25, 5 y -20oC, con dos tratamientos: control y escarificación. El CH fue del 11% en ambas especies. En P. nigra, el porcentaje de germinación de las semillas escarificadas fue mayor al 80% en todos los experimentos realizados, mientras que el poder germinativo de las semillas del control disminuyó con la desecación y el almacenamiento. La temperatura de almacenamiento no influyó en la cantidad de semillas germinadas. El porcentaje de germinación de los endocarpos frescos de Z. mistol fue bajo (<35%), pero aumentó con la reducción del CH. En síntesis, P. nigra y Z. mistol son tolerantes a la desecación y al almacenamiento en las temperaturas probadas, por lo que pueden considerarse como probablemente ortodoxas.
Tolerancia a la desecación de semillas de Prosopis ferox y Pterogyne nitens (Fabaceae)

Abstract: La elevada diversidad de especies y endemismos, conjuntamente con la acelerada pérdida de biodiversidad por deforestaciones, destaca la importancia de emprender acciones combinadas de conservación in situ y ex situ. El objetivo de este trabajo fue estudiar la tolerancia a la desecación de las semillas de Prosopis ferox y Pterogyne nitens, para su conservación ex situ a largo plazo en el BGEN. El contenido de humedad (CH) se determinó colocando las semillas de cada población en estufa a 103°C y pesando las muestras a intervalos regulares hasta peso constante. Se realizaron ensayos de germinación en distintos CH: semillas frescas, 10-12%, 3-5%, y en semillas mantenidas seis meses a -20oC y a 3-5% de CH. El CH de las semillas frescas de P. ferox fue de 14.2% y el de P. nitens de 10% para las dos poblaciones estudiadas. Las semillas de P. ferox llegaron a peso constante a las 17hr y las de P. nitens a las 3hr de secado. La germinación de las semillas de P. ferox fue mayor en los tratamientos con escarificación y la diferencia aumento con la reducción del CH y el almacenamiento. Las semillas de P. nitens con el CH reducido, requieren escarificación. Se concluye que las semillas de ambas especies son probablemente ortodoxas ya que la germinación superó el 80% en las semillas desecadas al 3-5% CH y almacenadas durante seis meses a -20°C. The high number of endemisms and species diversity together with the accelerated biodiversity loss by deforestation, especially in North Western Argentina, points out the need to work on species conservation combining ex situ and in situ strategies. The aim of this work was to study the desiccation tolerance in seeds of P. ferox and P. nitens for long term ex situ conservation at the Germplasm Bank of Native Species (BGEN) of the National University of Salta (Argentina). The fruits were collected from ten individuals in P. ferox at the National Park Los Cardones and from two sites (Orán and Rivadavia) for P. nitens. Desiccation tolerance was assessed following previous established methodologies. The moisture content (MC) of the seeds was determined by keeping them in oven at 103°C and weighting the samples at different intervals till constant weight. Germination essays were carried out with two treatments (control and scarification), with different seed MC (fresh, 10-12%, 3-5%) and in desiccated seeds (3-5% MC) stored six months at -20oC. Neritic Jellyfishes (Cnidaria: Cubozoa and Scyphozoa) from the coast of Rio Grande do Norte state, northeast of Brazil

Abstract: For the entire Brazilian coast, there are 22 published records of scyphozoans. On the other hand, only 35 species ofcubozoans were described worldwide, four of them reported for the Brazilian coast. However, little is known about thespecies of cubozoans and scyphozoans in the Northeastern states of Brazil. The aim of this study was to perform asurvey of the jellyfish (Cnidaria: Cubozoa and Scyphozoa) on the coast of Rio Grande do Norte state, Northeast ofBrazil. Specimens were collected using trawl net on beaches in the counties of Natal (in 2003) and Tibaú (in 2004). Forthe Rio Grande do Norte coast there were few records of large jellyfish, and new records of the following cubozoan andscyphozoan species were verified: Chiropsalmus quadrumanus; Chrysaora lactea; Lychnorhiza lucerna andStomolophus meleagris. The studied species had their distributions expanded in the coast to the State of Rio Grande doNorte.
