Revista Cubana de Cirug?-a , 2009,
Abstract: introduction. lung metastases are frequent both in primary epithelial tumors and mesenchymatous tumors due to the fact that the whole cardiac output passes through the minor circulation. the surgical indication is a problem of cost-benefit relationship, and it is conditioned among other aspects by the disease free interval, the general state of the patient, the number of metastases and the type of resection. the objective of this study was to present our experience and results with this treatment. methods. a descriptive cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted in 6 patients with lung metastasis treated at "amalia simoni" hospital in camaguey between 1997 and 2007. the variables analyzed were sex, age, histopathology and localization of the primary tumor, initial operation, time elapsed between the initial operation and metastasectomy, number of pre- and transoperative metastases, approach route, localization of the nodules, type of surgical resection and survival. results. average age was 56 years old and there was no difference as regards sex. the primary tumors depended on the digestive system in 3 patients. most of them were unique nodules and pulmonary lobectomy was the most used procedure. average survival was 13 months. no important morbidity was reported and there were no deaths in the series.

Migración y devociones transfronterizas
Arias, Patricia;Durand, Jorge;
Migración y desarrollo , 2009,
Abstract: this article analyzes and describes the development of new religious devotions in the mexican northern border and the southern united states since the late 19th century. it examines the social construction of a new religious and votive space in an emerging territoriality outside traditional mexican religious spaces and images. this emerging territoriality, based on new types of transit, permanence, and settlement in a context less weighed down with tradition led to a profound religious change and a new ritualization and symbolization of space. this article suggests that the development and dissemination of these border devotions is closely related to a previously absent element: the development and popularization of new technologies and the new uses given to communication technologies.

?Puede la teoría de los modos de pensamiento explicar algunas de las diferencias entre la corriente principal en economía y la keynesiana/postkeynesiana?
García-Arias,Jorge;
Revista de Ciencias Sociales , 2009,
Abstract: this paper offers a possible explanation for the divergences between mainstream economics and the keynesian/post-keynesian school. using the dichotomy set forth by shelia dow between the cartesian/euclidean mode of thought (a closed, atomic and dual system) and the babylonian/stoic mode (open, organic and not dual), this study approaches the methodological differences between both currents and shows how the use of different modes of thought imply different ways of understanding and practicing economy.
Information Cascades and Currency Crises: A Theoretical Analysis
Jorge García-Arias
Portal hypertension-related inflammatory phenotypes: From a vitelline and amniotic point of view  [PDF]
Maria-Angeles Aller, Natalia Arias, Isabel Prieto, Luis Santamaria, Maria-Paz de Miguel, Jorge-Luis Arias, Jaime Arias
Advances in Bioscience and Biotechnology (ABB) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/abb.2012.37110
Abstract: Prehepatic portal hypertension induces a splanchnic low-grade inflammatory response that could switch to high-grade inflammation with the development of severe and life-threatening complications when associated with chronic liver disease. The extraembryonic origin of the portal system maybe determines the regression to an extraembryonic phenotype, i.e., vitellogenic and amniotic, during the evolution of both types of portal hypertension. Thus, prehepatic portal hypertension, or compensated hypertension by portal vein ligation in the rat, is associated with molecular mechanisms related to vitellogenesis, where hepatic steatosis and splanchnic angiogenesis stand out. In turn, extrahepatic cholestasis in the rat induces intrahepatic portal hypertension, or decompensated hypertension, with ascites and hepatorenal syndrome. The splanchnic interstitium, the mesenteric lymphatic system, and the peritoneal mesothelium seem to create an inflammatory pathway that could have a key pathophysiological relevance in the production of ascites. The hypothetical comparison between the ascitic and the amniotic fluid also allows for translational investigation. The induced regression of the splanchnic system to extraembryonic functions by portal hypertension highlights the great relevance of the extraem-bryonic structures even during postnatal life.
The principal reservoir host of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the urban areas of Manaus, Central Amazon of Brazil
Arias, Jorge R.;Naiff, Roberto D.;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1981, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761981000300005
Abstract: twenty one opossums (didelphis marsupialis) from disturbed primary forest in the vicinity of manaus, and seven from an isolated island of secondary vegetation within the city of manaus, were examined for the presence of leishmania. of the opossums from the primary forests, 13 (61.9%) were found to be positive for leishmania braziliensis guyanenesis. one additional opossum was found to be positive for le. mexicana amazonensis. a simple and economical trapping technique for opossums is presented here, and a control method in special cases is suggested.
Besnoitia (protozoa: toxoplasmatinae) isolado de mucuras Didelphis marsupialis na Regi?o Amaz?nica, Brasil
Naiff, Roberto D.;Arias, Jorge R.;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1983, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761983000400006
Abstract: from a total of 224 didelphis marsupialis examined, in 15 were found cysts of besnoitia in muscles and viscera. it's the first time that this protozoan is isolated from naturally infected animals in brazil. the experimental transmission to laboratory animals was done by the inoculum of tissue and cysts triturated.
