Abstract: summary the mangrove ecosystems which surround the la mancha lagoon in veracruz, mexico, are characterized by the high complexity of its landscapes in conditions of adequate conservation. this work deals on the structure and composition of the geocomplexes of this area. the use of structural-genetic and historical-evolutionary principles permitted the survey, classification and cartography of mangrove landscapes at a detailed scale. it was possible to differentiate 28 inferior units, six intermediate units and five of a superior order, all at the scale of 1:25 000. the results suggested that the physical-geographical approach complex could be of great use for the inventory, characterization and cartography of mangroves at a detailed scale, providing information on the genetic type of the relief, litological composition, periodicity of flooding of surface areas, vegetative cover and soils. this information is invaluable for the environmental planning and preservation of these ecosystems

Investigaciones geográficas , 1996,
Abstract: Túe state of Morelos is one of the s d e s t states of Mexiw, its area is 4 999 lanz where Tropical Dry Forest is the most imporfant vegetation. This vegetation is composed of tropical wmmunities, with domination of low t m , wide crown and remarkable seasooal changes, this is because they lose &ir leaves. Landsat TM image data were evaluated to determine their abihty to discriminate this vegetation among others. An autmnated unsupervised wmputer classi cation was performed and the results verificad on ground. Results showed a classification accuracy of 73 percent. Fmally, the tropical dry forest could be identified among other associations, but the interna1 variations were not easy to identify. Lost wver was evaluated for the state based in the classi cation result with the aid of digital, potential md actual, vegetaton maps.

Abstract: the reduction in protein content and inclusion of wheat bran in the diet improves the amino-acids (aa) profile, but increases the fiber content. to this respect, yeasts can increase the digestion of fiber. three experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of yeast culture (yc) on diets with a standard (scpd) or low level of crude protein (lcpd), with or without free aa, for growing-finishing pigs (landrace-hampshire-duroc). in the three experiments the design was randomized complete blocks and data were analyzed with glm procedure of sas. in experiment 1, 28 growing pigs (25.2±4.7 kg) were used and there was a factorial arrangement 2 (cp, 11.0 and 18.8 %) x 2 (yc, 0 and 0.75 %) of treatments. the yc did not change (p>0.33) the productive response; the cp level did not influence weight gain (adg) nor feed intake (fi; p>0.14), but the conversion (ca) was better (p=0.01) with scpd. experiment 2 was conducted with 40 finishing pigs (60.2±8.3 kg) and the treatments (t) were: tl) base diet, wheat-soybean-wheat-bran meal; t2) t1 + 0.75 % of yc; t3) tl + 1.5 % of yc; t4) control diet wheat-soybean meal; and t5) diet low in cp + free aa. the yc did not change the performance nor the characteristics of the carcass; when it was compared with the lcpd, the area of the longissimus dorsi muscle (p=0.08) and the back fat (p=0.02) were better in pigs fed diets with yc cl, but yield (p=0.02), adg (p=0.04) and fi (p=0.05) were higher in the lcpd. experiment 3 was conducted with 32 finishing pigs (67.1 ±10.3 kg); and there was a factorial arrangement 2 (pc, 13.0 and 16.0%) x 2 (yc, 0 and 0.75 %) of treatments. the yc (p>0.70) and the cp level (p≥0.43) did not affect the response of the pigs. it can be concluded that the inclusion of yc in wheat-based diets does not influence the productive response of growing to finishing pigs.

Abstract: in the last 2 decades there has been an alarming increase in violent behavior which has resulted in severe injuries to children, that is, child abuse (ca). there is a large number of forms of child aggression, physical abuse being one of them (pha). while it is not the most common, it may be the cause of severe bodily and emotional harm; it may present as a subtle event or as major aggression which could be fatal. the sudden infant death syndrome (sids) is an unexpected and sudden occurrence for which no clinical nor autopsy explanation can be given. there are reports on the possible relation between pha and the ca based on the fact that between 3.5 and 5% of the cases of sids are actually instances of ca. the incidence of this problem in mexico is not known. given the great similarity of family and social history as well as initial clinical findings in both settings, the accurate diagnosis is very difficult. in order to make an accurate diagnosis between these 2 conditions, we propose in this paper a specific approach to be followed by every professional involved in child care, especially by those who handle cases of violence in this age group.

Abstract: the present study aimed to evaluate the growth of tomato plants in a substrate made from sand (70 % based on volume) plus 30 % particles of pumice 2.38 to 3.35 mm in diameter, to set the frequency of irrigation that does not affect plant development, and to determine the presence of contaminants in the substrate. tomato seedlings were transplanted in a pumice-sand substrate and subjected to three irrigation frequencies (daily, every three days and every six days).the development of tomato plants was assessed over time and data of plant height, root length, and number of leaves and flowers were recorded. the substrate was analyzed at the beginning and end of the experiment. the results show that tomato plants in sand substrate with pumice and water every day grew more. water consumption was 600 ml per day at the time of peak demand. the initial moisture retention of the substrate was 44.40 %, of which 56 % was available, conditions that can be exploited in the production of crops in greenhouses.

Gaceta Médica de Caracas , 2008,
Abstract: the histological grade of the wordl health organization and the extension of the initial surgical resection have been considered determining prognostic factors in meningiomas. nevertheless, a recurrence rate close to20 % in benign meningiomas completely resected arises the need of considering new prognostic factors. in order to estimate the importance of the histological grade andto determine the influence of clinical and morphologicalfactors upon the risk of recurrences in meningiomas, a comparative clinical-pathological study was carried out on 580 tumors (belonging to 532 patients). progression of the histological grade was evident in a significant percentage of male patients in addition to a major invasive quality of the tumor to adjacent structures and a higher percentage of recurrent tumors, while the age of the patient, the localization and size of the tumor, the extension of the initial surgical resection and the interval free from recurrencies, did not vary with the histological grade. no significant differences were observed when comparing non recurrent meningiomas and recurrent meningiomas with respect to the gender and age of thepatients, histological grade, localization and size of thetumor, extension of the initial surgical resection andtumorous invasion of adjacent structures. while thehistological grade of the meningiomas is important topredict their biological behaviour, there are no reliable clinical or morphological parameters able to determinethe prognosis for a particular histological grade (especiallywithin the group of benign meningiomas).
Expresión inmunohistoquímica de la proteína p53 en relación con el grado histológico y riesgo de recidivas en meningiomas intracraneanos

Gaceta Médica de Caracas , 2008,
Abstract: meningiomas are frequent primary neoplasms of the central nervous system, usually benign and susceptible to healing through surgery. the histological grade of the world health organization and the extension of the initial surgical resection, are determining prognostic factors in these tumors. nevertheless, a recurrence rate close to 20 % in benign meningiomas completely resected arises the need of considering new prognostic factors. a total of 93 cases were selected for the immunohistochemical study of p53 protein in relation to the histological grade and the risk of recurrences in meningiomas. the immunohistochemical labeling index of p53 protein increased with the progression of the histological grade (means of 37,15 % for grade i, 44,49 % for grade ii, and 57,81 % for grade iii) and was significantly superior in recurrent meningiomas (46,19 % vs 32,29 % of non recurrent). the cut off of 40 % became statistically useful to separate the benign meningiomas (grade i) from the non benign (grade ii and iii) and the recurrent tumors from the non recurrent. in this way, a labelling index of p53 protein equal or superior to 40 % can indicate the possibility of a higher grade in histologically ambiguous cases or a higher risk to develop recurrencies in meningiomas of a particular histological grade (specially in benign tumors).
