International Journal of Morphology , 2010,
In this work describes in detail skeletical elements of upper respiratory tracts of 10 budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus), the description obtains evident differences in its anatomy doesn't relate before, this should to be possible at interest to study syrinx and not full respiratory tracts the objective was to describer morphology and ossification of full upper respiratory tracts of budgerigar, this obtained utilizing clearing technique's with stain double (alizarin red "S" and alcian blue) it allows to observe ossification of respiratory tracts, it obtained like result two principal evident differences: (1) the lingual shows two small paragloss bones associates with its mobility and (2) a important ossification from the lingual to "A" syrinx elements. Respectful at patron tracheal and syrinx skeletical doesn't show evident differences in comparation with other psittacidae. ISRN Allergy , 2012, DOI: 10.5402/2012/183983
Abstract: Background. Immunotherapy has proven to be an useful tool in the management of allergic respiratory diseases; however, little has been studied in atopic dermatitis. Objective. To evaluate the clinical and immunological impact of immunotherapy with mites allergen extracts in atopic dermatitis. Methods. Patients with atopic dermatitis were assigned with computer-generated randomization to either of the following groups: (a) controls received only topical treatment with steroids and/or tacrolimus and (b) actively treated patients received topical treatment plus immunotherapy. Levels of serum total IgE, mites-specific IgE and IgG4 were assessed at study start and after one year of immunotherapy. Results. 31 patients in the active group and 29 in the control group completed the study. Symptoms and medication scores were significantly reduced in the active group after six months. Three patients in the control group showed new sensitizations to mites, while 3 patients in the active group showed neosensitization to shrimp with negative oral food challenge. We observed significant increase of mites-specific IgG4 levels in active group. Conclusion. Specific allergen immunotherapy induced a tolerogenic IgG4 response to mite allergens associated with favorable clinical effects in atopic dermatitis patients. 1. Introduction Atopic dermatitis (AD) is an inflammatory skin disease characterized by pruritus, lichenified plaques, and family history of atopy. Good skin hydration and topical steroids are the keystone for symptomatic control. However, chronic steroid use is frequently associated with adverse effects. It is clear that Th1 immune response plays an important role in the development of AD, but allergens and Th2 immune response are the main cause of both initiation and exacerbation of AD [1]. At present, immunotherapy represents the only therapy for allergic diseases by targeting sensitization itself. Its beneficial clinical effects have been widely demonstrated in asthma, rinitis, and hymenoptera allergy in terms of both symptoms and medication scores [2, 3]. Some studies have shown that immunotherapy could be an option treatment in patients with AD; however there are few studies evaluating the immunological changes and the reduction of topical steroids in patients with AD [4, 5]. The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunomodulator and the clinical effect of the immunotherapy in the reduction of symptoms and topical drugs, in a group of patients with atopic dermatitis from a tropical city (Medellin Colombia). 2. Infectio , 2010,
Abstract: introduction: fungal susceptibility against micelial fungi has not been developed at the same pace as susceptibility against yeasts. scarce information is available about that kind of isolates in colombia. materials and methods: in vitro susceptibility against micelial isolates from patients with cancer was determined. the e-test method was used to find out susceptibility against fluconazole, voriconazole, itraconazole, amphotericin b, and caspofungin. isolates of the genera aspergillus (36 a. fumigatus, 12 a. flavus, 9 a. niger, 6 a. terreus, 4 a. nidulans and one a. versicolor isolate), fusarium (n=9), geotrichum and paecilomyces (n=2 each one) obtained from patients with cancer were tested. these isolates were obtained from bronchoalveolar lavage (30%), pulmonary biopsies (36%) and bloodstream infections (9%). results: the general pattern of resistance was 28% against intraconazole, 15% against caspofungin, 14% against amphotericin b, and 5% against voriconazole. in general, susceptibility against fluconazole and itraconazole showed a diminishing trend. voriconazole, caspofungin, and amphotericin b showed the best pharmacologic potency. fusarium sp. presented a higher activity level against voriconazole. there were differences in the susceptibility against voriconazole, anphotericin b, and caspofungin depending on the type of micelial isolate (aspergillus vs. non- aspergillus). conclusion: in general, the available antifungal treatments against mycelial fungi identified in the cancer center show diminished susceptibility.

Abstract: a bibliometric study of the cuban scientific production on dengue indexed by scopus, from 1981 to 2006, was conducted in order to identify the most productive authors and journals, the different co-authorship teams, and the main research fronts treated during this period. 163 articles signed by 278 authors were obtained. the co-authorship index was 5.53. the papers were published in 45 journals from 12 countries. 64.4 % of the articles were cited, and the average of citation per article was 6.2. the leading institution in the cuban research on dengue was "pedro kourí" institute of tropical medicine, which was present in more than 90 % of the articles. 83.3 % of the most productive authors are from this institute. a remarked growth of the scientific production was observed during the last 25 years, due to the increase of the moderate episodes reported from 1997 up to the present. the cuban researchers have studied different clinical, virological, and epidemiological data about dengue, and they have identified as causes of a possible re-appearance of the disease in cuba, the increasing migration to the area of people from regions where the disease is endemic, a high level of vector infestation, and the nonfulfillment of the measures to eradicate the vector
Uso de drogas en migrantes mexicanos captados en ciudades de la frontera noroccidental México-Estados Unidos
Sánchez-Huesca, Ricardo;Arellanez-Hernández, Jorge Luis;
Estudios fronterizos , 2011,
Abstract: the purpose of this research was to confirm the existence of a relationship between the immigration stay in the united states and the use of illicit drugs. by applying a nonprobabilistic sample in tijuana, nogales and ciudad juarez 567 immigrants, were interviewed 77.8% were males (average of 29 years old). the main reason of their immigration was the search for an "economic improvement"; the most of they did not have the documentation to cross the border. the main destinations were california, arizona and texas. when comparing the use of illicit drugs before and after the immigration experience, the number of users of cocaine and methamphetamine were found to signiicantly increase. the "curiosity" was the main reason to drug use, as well as the fact of being "invited by friends". other reasons seem to be associated to the immigration experience: some used drugs because they felt depressed or because they needed to take a break and feel relaxed after working. these findings make it possible to confirm that the immigration experience modifies the pattern of use of drugs in some immigrants who have previously used this kind of substances; some others start using them during the immigration stay.

Ingeniería y Desarrollo , 2011,
Abstract: diabetic retinopathy early is not usually perceivable in patients with diabetic. their first signs, like micro-aneurysms, often are unnoticed in preliminary test due to its difficult detection by means specialists. in addition, its presence is necessarily not directly related to diabetic retinopathy, since there are others pathologies that may also cause those. until the detection of the presence of exudates, a specialist can deduce the presence of diabetic retinopathy. this paper presents a method to assist the identification and differentiation of exudates on color retinal images based on a variety of k-nn filters. the proposed method proved to be a sensitive and specific detection of bright lesions, able to determine with sufficient certainty, a possible injury, with a specificity of 99%.

Revista de Salud Pública , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0124-00642010000600002
Abstract: objective analyzing a group of females suffering from cancers concept of the quality of life and evaluating how they perceived such concept, depending on patients age-group. methods the following open-ended question was put to a sample of 114 women suffering from breast cancer, "in your opinion, what is quality of life?" their replies were analyzed using factorial methods for categorical variables. results the most used graphical forms and repeated segments were associated with notions linked to well-being and health; analyzing characteristic forms supported these concepts importance. some concepts appeared to be more relevant according to patient age-group. the young female group emphasized the right and opportunity to have adequate treatment whilst overcoming disease and response to its treatment were relevant to the 41-50 year-old group. functioning and enjoyment were significant for the 51-60 year-old group whilst patients aged over 60 emphasized spiritual well-being. binary correspondence analysis identified three domains: health (not just being the absence of disease or infirmity), autonomy or adequate dependence, and family/social well-being. age-groups had differential representation regarding each domain. conclusions besides traditional domains, spirituality and a particular system guaranteeing access to quality health-care emerged as being important domains in female cancer patients perception of the quality of life. quality of life is a multidimensional and dynamic concept that changes according to age; this suggested that quality of life is supported by subjective conceptualization; the use of scales for measuring quality of life could thus be questionable because of their subjectivity and dynamic nature.

Sánchez-Pedraza,Ricardo; Gamboa,Oscar; Díaz,Jorge A.;
Revista de Salud Pública , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0124-00642008000100017
Abstract: decision analysis consists of a set of tools supporting and handling structured evaluation. such methodology is widely used for the economic evaluation of health care planning and programmes. this article outlines some characteristics regarding complex decision-making and shows the fundamental issues and stages considered when making decisions in an uncertain scenario (problem definition, choosing an appropriate time-frame, structuring the problem, developing a model for analysing it, selecting the best alternative and analysing sensitivity). some criticism of this decision-making method is then made.
