Generation of Entropy in Spark Ignition Engines
Bernando Ribeiro,Jorge Martins,António Nunes
International Journal of Thermodynamics , 2007, DOI: 10.5541/ijot.188
Abstract: Recent engine development has focused mainly on the improvement of engine efficiency and output emissions. The improvements in efficiency are being made by friction reduction, combustion improvement and thermodynamic cycle modification. New technologies such as Variable Valve Timing (VVT) or Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) are important for the latter. To assess the improvement capability of engine modifications, thermodynamic analysis of indicated cycles of the engines is made using the first and second laws of thermodynamics. The Entropy Generation Minimization (EGM) method proposes the identification of entropy generation sources and the reduction of the entropy generated by those sources as a method to improve the thermodynamic performance of heat engines and other devices. A computer model created and implemented in MATLAB Simulink was used to simulate the conventional Otto cycle and the various processes (combustion, free expansion during exhaust, heat transfer and fluid flow through valves and throttle) were evaluated in terms of the amount of the entropy generated. An Otto cycle, a Miller cycle (over-expanded cycle) and a Miller cycle with compression ratio adjustment are studied using the referred model in order to evaluate the amount of entropy generated in each cycle. All cycles are compared in terms of work produced per cycle.

Ribeiro, Edson Augusto;Cruz Junior, Ruy Jorge;Moreira, Samuel Martins;
Sao Paulo Medical Journal , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-31802005000300012
Abstract: context: spigelian hernia is an uncommon spontaneous lateral ventral hernia with an incarceration ratio of around 20%. however, complications such as intestinal obstruction are extremely rare. we report on a case of giant incarcerated spigelian hernia with a clinical condition of complete intestinal obstruction that was treated using prosthetic polypropylene mesh. case report: a 72-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency department complaining of diffuse abdominal pain. abdominal examination revealed a firm 10 x 10 cm tender mass in the lower left quadrant, without surrounding cellulite or tenderness. plain abdominal radiographs displayed the formation of levels, thus indicating the existence of intestinal obstruction. an abdominal computed tomography scan clearly showed a fluid and air-filled mass in the soft tissue area of the lower left-side abdominal wall. spigelian incarcerated hernia was diagnosed and the patient underwent emergency surgical repair by means of local incision. the large defect in the abdominal wall was closed up as successive anatomical layers, and a prosthetic polypropylene mesh was set into the lateral aspect of the rectus sheath. the postoperative course was uneventful and the patient was discharged on the seventh postoperative day.

Diabetology & Metabolic Syndrome , 2010, DOI: 10.1186/1758-5996-2-42
Abstract: A total of 229 girls (aged 12-15 years old) comprised the sample of this study. Anthropometric data (height, body mass, waist circumference) were collected. Body mass index (BMI) was also calculated. Muscular strength was assessed taking into account the tests that comprised the FITNESSGRAM test battery, i.e. the curl-up and the push-up. Participants were then categorized in one of 3 categories according the number of tests in which they accomplished the scores that allow them to be classified in health or above health zone. The blood pressure [BP], fasting total cholesterol [TC], low density lipoprotein-cholesterol [LDL-C], high density lipoprotein-cholesterol [HDL-C], triglycerides [TG], glucose, and a metabolic risk score (MRS) were also examined. Physical Activity Index (PAI) was obtained by questionnaire.Higher compliance with health-zone criteria (good in the 2 tests), adjusted for age and maturation, were positive and significantly (p ≤ 0.05) associated with height (r = 0.19) and PAI (r = 0.21), while a significant but negative association was found for BMI (r = -0.12); WC (r = -0.19); TC (r = -0.16); TG (r = -0.16); LDL (r = -0.16) and MRS (r = -0.16). Logistic regression showed that who were assigned to MF fittest group were less likely (OR = 0.27; p = 0.003) to be classified overweight/obese and less likely (OR = 0.26; p = 0.03) to be classified as having MRS. This last association was also found for those whom only performed 1 test under the health zone (OR = 0.23; p = 0.02).Our data showed that low strength test performance was associated with increased risk for obesity and metabolic risk in adolescent girls even after adjustment for age and maturation.A lack of physical fitness (PF) has been associated with the development of cardiovascular disease risk factors (CVD) in youth, such as lipid disorders, high blood pressure, insulin resistance among others [1]. This is a cause of concern because CVD risk factors tend to track to adulthood [2] and the proce

Abstract: this study aimed to analyze the impact of changes in age-related and cause-related mortality on life expectancy at birth in the state of santa catarina, brazil, in the 1990s. data were obtained from the mortality information system (sim) for the three-year periods 1989/1990/1991 and 1998/1999/2000. infant mortality rates and specific mortality rates for individuals > 1 year of age were calculated by gender and cause of death. the pollard method was used to disaggregate the contributions by mortality from different causes and in different ages to life expectancy at birth. the age groups that contributed the most to the increase in life expectancy at birth were 0-1 year and > 70 years. the causes of death that most contributed to this increase were chronic non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, in the age brackets above 35 years, and neonatal diseases in the < 1-year bracket. finally, there were a high proportion of deaths from ill-defined causes, indicating that the true cause-related mortality structure in the state is still unknown.

This article presents a case in which Brown-Séquard syndrome resulted from a double level cervical disc herniation. A 40-year-old man without previous history of cervical pathology, presented with insidious right arm and leg paresis associated with associated with decreased pain and thermal sensitivity in the left hemibody after diving which caused indirect trauma of the cervical spine. Magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spine showed double level disc herniation in C4-C5 and C5-6 with compression of the right half of spinal cord and hyperintensity in T2-weighted images. After a complete decompressi
