Abstract: introduction: the treatment of facial deformities and malocclusions, such as anterior open bite, was one of the first applications of miniplates for orthodontic anchorage. the use of this treatment system reduces the number of patients referred to orthognathic surgery and simplifies many problems. this approach applies intrusive forces to posterior teeth, and the mandible undergoes counterclockwise rotation, which decreases lower facial height and advances the projection of hard and soft tissue pogonions. objective: this study describes the principles of orthodontic mechanics in the correction of anterior open bite and illustrates these principles with a series of cases.

Abstract: several studies have been published concerning epstein-barr virus (ebv) infection and nasopharyngeal cancer (npc) development. the incidences of histological types are different according to endemic or non-endemic regions. latent ebv infection is found in almost all cases of npc in endemic regions, but normally absent in type i carcinomas, more common in non-endemic regions. aim: the purpose of this hospital-based study was to analyze the presence of ebv in nasopharyngeal tumor tissues and in peripheral blood of nasopharyngeal cancer patients and healthy individuals, in a low risk, non-endemic area. methods: ebv detection in samples of nasopharyngeal cancer patients and healthy individuals. results: this study indicates that the frequency of ebv positive cases in peripheral blood is higher in advanced tumor stages. conclusions: the incidence rates of npc have a distinct distribution. since the prevalence of this disease is low in occidental countries, little is known about the biology of these tumors in non-endemic areas. we observed statistically significant differences in ebv detection between the npc patient group and the control group. this study may help to understand the biological mechanisms of npc and the correlation of ebv infection with this disease, in a low risk, non-endemic region.

Abstract: Trocas multiculturais em contextos coloniais mo ambicanos, envolvendo referências identitárias africanas, europeias e asiáticas, constituem o foco analítico do presente texto. The focus of this article is on cross-cultural encounters, involving African, European and Asian identities, that occurred in colonial Mozambique in the 19th and 20th. It suggests that the colonial ideology of cultural separatism and the manipulative mana-gement of socio-cultural differences between African, Chinese, Indian and Portuguese populations did not succeed in supplanting the spontaneous processes of hybridization and transculturation of these communities. It generated continuously new identities and, with them, also new tensions and social recompositions.

Abstract: background and objectives: the study of the vasomotor effect of local anesthetics (la) is of paramount importance for the analysis of the occurrence of cardiotoxic and neurotoxic effects, and drug interactions. in order to find a safer drug than racemic bupivacaine, this study aimed to analyze digital infrared imaging of acute vasomotor effect of bupivacaine and levobupivacaine in rats intraperitoneally. method: we used 30 male wistar rats distributed into three groups (n = 10) and subjected to an intraperitoneal injection of la. in group c (control) 1 ml 0.9% saline was injected intraperitoneally. in group b (bupivacaine), intraperitoneal injection of 0.5% of racemic bupivacaine (s50-r50), dose of 20 mg.kg-1 of body weight. in group l (levobupivacaine), intraperitoneal injection of levobupivacaine 0.5% enantiomeric excess (s75-r25) in dose of 20 mg.kg-1 of body weight. the procedure was thermographicly continuously filmed from the time of pre-injection until 30 minutes after injection. the results of the recordings were analyzed in graphical form, verifying the maximum temperature of each rat and the average temperature of the system that housed the animal. results: the results of graphic analysis showed no difference between group l and group c, and the average temperature remained stable through-out the experiment in both groups. in group b, there was a phenomenon of temperature increase after intraperitoneal injection of bupivacaine. conclusions: the results demonstrated that the vasomotor effect of the acute toxicity of levobupivacaine was similar to group c with saline, through macroscopic studies by infrared digital filmmaking, and that there were vasomotor changes (vasoconstriction), with bupivacaine intoxication in relation to both group c and group l.
