'I will do as my father did': On Portuguese and other European views of Mughal succession crises
Jorge Flores
E-Journal of Portuguese History , 2005,
Abstract: The Mughal succession crises occurring between the political downfall of Akbar (c. 1600) and Aurangzeb’s death (1707) were portrayed in detail by a considerable number of European observers. This essay intends to study the way those critical moments, that would eventually lead to the disintegration of the Mughal empire, were openly desired both in Goa and Lisbon: they somewhat represented the life insurance of a defenseless Estado da índia forced to face a giant – the Gr o Mogor – that could not be controlled. On the other hand, and for different reasons, the agents of the English East India Company, operating on the ground, as well as the theatergoers that saw John Dryden’s plays in London, favored the dynastic stability of Timurid India. This represents an interesting diversity of European images of the Mogor, and asks for a careful analysis of their motives and impact.

Domínguez,Orlando J; Serrano,Emilio M; Flores,Jorge E; Michel,Raquel L;
Información tecnológica , 2011, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-07642011000100013
Abstract: this paper proposes a modification to the traditional process for obtaining boric acid with the addition of acid leaching split, to get a highly soluble product, as sodium pentaborate. in this way the mineral can be dissolved without heating, decreasing the amount of leaching reagent, thus saving energy. the ph of the clarified liquid is decreased leading to the precipitation of boric acid. the gangue runs out at different stages of precipitation and filtration, with its successive washes, improving process performance. the produced boric acid has characteristics, such as texture and purity, comparable with that obtained by traditional processes.

This paper proposes a modification to the traditional process for obtaining boric acid with the addition of acid leaching split, to get a highly soluble product, as sodium pentaborate.

Revista chilena de historia natural , 2009, DOI: 10.4067/S0716-078X2009000300003
Abstract: various studies have shown that model performance may vary depending on the species being modelled, the study área, or the number of sampled localities, and suggest that it is necessary to assess which model is better for a particular situation. thus, in this study we evalúate the performance of different techniques for modelling the distribution of patagonian insects. we applied eight of the most widely used modelling methods (artificial neural networks, bioclim, classification and regression trees, domain, generalized additive models, garp, generalized linear models, and maxent) to the distribution of ten patagonian insect species. we compared model performance with five accuracy measures. to overeóme the problem of not having reliable absence data with which to evalúate model performance, we used randomly selected pseudo-absences located outside of the polygon área defined by taxonomic experts. our analyses show significant differences among modelling methods depending on the chosen accuracy measure. maxent performed the best according to four out of the five accuracy measures, although its accuracy did not differ significantly from that obtained with artificial neural networks. when assessed on per species basis, maxent was also one of the strongest performing methods, particularly for species sampled from a relatively low number of localities. overall, our study identified four groups of modelling techniques based on model performance. the top-performing group is composed of maxent and artificial neural networks, followed closely by the domain technique. the third group includes garp, gam, glm, and cart, and the fourth best performer is the bioclim technique. although these results may allow obtaining better distributional predictions for reserve selection, it is necessary to be cautious in their use due to the provisional nature of these simulations.
Efficient Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Ionic Esterified Amino Acids

Molecules , 2011, DOI: 10.3390/molecules16108733
Abstract: In this work, an efficient microwave-assisted methodology for the esterification of unprotected α-amino acids is described. Ionic esterified amino acids were synthesized in satisfactory yields in a facile one-pot solventless protocol from unprotected amino acids and alcohols under acid catalysis (MsOH or p-TsOH) to afford the pure products after a simple work-up procedure. This procedure can also be extended to the preparation of long and short chain alkyl and benzyl esters.
Cephalic Vein: Detail of its Anatomy in the Deltopectoral Triangle

International Journal of Morphology , 2009, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-95022009000400013
Abstract: the cephalic vein shows a scarce description, especially in the deltopectoral triangle, and its ending in the axillary vein. some established considerations such as "superficial vein, located in the deltopectoral groove, accompanied by braches of the thoraco-acromial artery, which ends in the deltopectoral triangle in the shape of fan arch" should be reevaluated. procedures difficulties in the la catheterization deserve for a more accurate description. a descriptive, prospective study is performed. the goal is to determine the anatomy of the cephalic vein in the deltopectoral triangle, with a special focus on the characteristics concerning its path and type of termination. findings show that the cephalic vein is deeply placed and has a different path than that of an arch (circumference segment on a level) with a retro pectoral path and an acceptable diameter, thus useful and safe in the catheterization processes.

Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0066-782X2004000100004
Abstract: objective: to assess the effectiveness of metoprolol in preventing clinically detectable atrial fibrillation (af) and flutter after coronary artery bypass graft (cabg) surgery . methods: an open, randomized study was carried out to treat 200 patients who had undergone isolated cabg surgery with extracorporeal circulation. the patients were randomized to either receive metoprolol orally or not to receive the medication in the postoperative period. the outcomes were the detection of sustained atrial af and flutter, which were symptomatic or required treatment. the patients with the following characteristics were excluded from the study: baseline left ventricular ejection fraction < 35%; previous af; history of bronchospasm; second- and third-degree atrioventricular blocks, low cardiac output, and heart failure. results: arrhythmias occurred in 11 out of 100 patients in the metoprolol group and in 24 out of 100 patients in the control group (p=0.02). the relative risk (rr) was 0.46 (95% ci = 0.24-0.88), and the number necessary to treat (nnt) and avoid the outcome was 8 patients. af was the arrhythmia most frequently observed (30/35). in 38 patients aged 70 years or more, the arrhythmias occurred in 2 out of 19 patients in the metoprolol group and in 10 out of 19 patients in the control group (c2 yates: p=0.01). the relative risk was 0.20 (95% ci = 0.05-0.79) and the number necessary to treat was 2 patients. conclusion: metoprolol is effective in preventing af and flutter in the postoperative period of cabg surgery, and this effect was more evident in the group of elderly patients.
Pedological diversity and the geoecological systems of Sierra de Guadalupe, central México

Revista mexicana de ciencias geológicas , 2009,
Abstract: the sierra de guadalupe, located north of mexico city, is an important geoecological system of the dry mexican basin. its topographical features, lithological materials and soil characteristics influence its biodiversity and ecosystem processes; conversely, patterns of biodiversity affect the soil properties at different scales. unfortunately, although widespread land disturbance, severe soil degradation, and slopes severely affected by slumps and landslides are present in this region, soil and landscape preservation strategies have received surprisingly little attention. this paper attempts to examine and define the pedodiversity context that characterizes the geoecological system of the sierra de guadalupe. we consider that characterizing this system provides a unique and indispensable tool for evaluating the environmental risks of the geoecosystem as well as the interactions and interrelations in the environment. the goals of this paper center on the rationale to identify soil units, determine their spatial distribution, define their variation in soil morphology and properties, and to classify them appropriately. our results revealed that the studied soils are derived from volcanogenic materials that are too young to be strongly weathered. uncultivated and incipiently developed soils, polycyclic soils and buried soils were detected in the study area. their soil characteristics and properties are ascribed mainly to successive processes of mass movement, erosion and redeposition (k cycles) as well as to their spatial arrangement on the slope profile. laboratory analyses showed that these soils are slightly acid and rich in organic matter. in addition, they have high cation exchange capacity saturated by ca2+ and mg2+. the clay fraction is composed of halloysite > kaolinite > smectite. the soils exhibit large quantities of sio2, besides total oxides abundances in the order sio2>al2o3>fe2o3, which indicates their incipient degree of weathering. we conclude that the c
