Abstract: End stage-renal-disease (ESRD) is associated with dyslipidemia and premature atherosclerosis. The study evaluates the effect of hemodialysis (HD) on HDL-remodeling between pre- and post-HD. Was conducted a cross-sectional study with 50 ESRD male patients, undergoing HD at Ana Neri Hospital, Salvador, Brazil. All individuals were on HD for at least 3 months, into a three sessions protocol for 3 - 4 hours per week, with a polysulfone low-flow basic-dialyzing-membrane and unfractionated-heparin. HDL Phospholipid-incorporation was measured by 14C-PL-scintillation-counting, expressed as %14C-PL/mL/hour. Paraoxonase (PON-1) activity was measured by spectrophotometry using paraoxon as substrate. Cardiovascular risk ratios and atherogenic index of plasma were calculated. Total cholesterol, HDL-C and non-HDL-C increased at post-HD on all age groups, but without triglycerides (TG) changes. TG/HDL-C decreased in 30 - 39 and 40 - 49 year (y) at post-HD (p < 0.05). LDL-C/apoB increased in >60 y, after HD (p <

OBJECTIVE: to evaluate first-degree relatives of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients regarding to clinical, immunogenetic and radiological aspects. METHODS: fourteen patients with AS followed at the University Hospital of the Ribeir o Preto Medical School, University of S o Paulo, Brazil (FMRP-USP) and thirty first-degree relatives were evaluated by clinical history, physical examination, HLA-B27 typing (by lymphocytotoxicity and flow cytometry), plain radiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of sacroiliacal joints. RESULTS: we found that 47% (14/30) of the relatives presented low back pain with inflammatory characteristics, 20% (6/30) fulfilled displayed radiological features of bilateral sacroiliitis, and 10% (3/30) fulfilled the criteria for ankylosing spondylitis. Sixty percent of the relatives were HLA-B27 positive, verified either by lymphocytotoxicity or flow cytometry. MRI was not more sensitive than conventional radiography in the detection of early changes of sacroiliitis. CONCLUSIONS: the evaluation of first-degree relatives of patients with ankylosing spondylitis may reveal oligosymptomatic and subclinical forms of the disease in a significant proportion of subjects.

Abstract: introduction: menopause is the period of life in which women experience progressive changes in their body. muscular strength and balance are important examples of changes occurring in this group of individuals. objective: evaluation and correlation of the static balance, quadriceps strength and ankle dorsiflexor torque in fertile (n = 20) and post-menopausal women (n = 45) were studied. methods: a device was used to record the ankle dorsiflexion torque and the quadriceps strength was measured according to the concept of one repetition maximum. the assessment of the static balance was made with the polhemus system. results: the control group presented ankle dorsiflexor torque and quadriceps strength greater than the post-menopausal women, but the static balance was not different between groups. in control group, correlation was observed only between quadriceps strength and using the fixed platform with eyes closed. in the post-menopausal women there was a correlation between static balance and the ankle dorsiflexor torque in the fixed platform with eyes open (r = 0.386; p = 0.008); fixed platform with eyes closed (r = 0.373; p = 0.01) and unstable platform with eyes open (r = 0.343; p = 0.02). in this group correlation between static balance and quadriceps strength was observed in testing the use of fixed platform with eyes closed (r = 0.315; p = 0.03). conclusions: the results suggest that the diminished muscular strength after menopause seems to be related to the hypoestrogenism and that the ankle dorsiflexor torque is an important factor for the maintenance of static balance in the first years of menopause.
