Anthropogenic Disturbances and the Natural Vegetation Regeneration: A Case Study of a Forest Fragment Located in a Cuesta Relief Area, State of S?o Paulo, Brazil  [PDF]

Abstract: The present study has been conducted in one of the five natural vegetation fragments at the Experimental Farm Edgardia, in Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil. In the past the forest fragment suffered disturbances due to the selective exploitation of tree species and the use of part of the surface as pasture. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the structure and the dynamics of natural vegetation. Three phytosociological surveys (2006, 2010 and 2014) were carried out in a sampled area of one hectare. The most abundant species were mapped in 2014, in a sampling unit with two hectares. Individuals of 37 families and 110 species have been recorded. The oscillation of the basal area observed through the forest inventories was due to the instability caused by disturbances. Only two out of the seven most abundant species mapped showed exponential diameter distribution. The unimodal distributions shown by the other five species have suggested that the vegetation has been occupying the most open spaces through regeneration in cycles. There was direct association between the spatial distribution and the dispersion syndrome for five out of the seven most abundant species. Three species have zoochoric dispersion, showing that wild animals populations have accomplished their function in the dispersion of seeds/fruit. The spatial distributions of four out of the seven most abundant species have provided evidence of how the regeneration of natural vegetation is being processed in this area.

Soil erosion fragility assessment using an impact model and geographic information system

Abstract: a study was taken in a 1566 ha watershed situated in the capivara river basin, municipality of botucatu, s?o paulo state, brazil. this environment is fragile and can be subjected to different forms of negative impacts, among them soil erosion by water. the main objective of the research was to develop a methodology for the assessment of soil erosion fragility at the various different watershed positions, using the geographic information system ilwis version 3.3 for windows. an impact model was created to generate the soil's erosion fragility plan, based on four indicators of fragility to water erosion: land use and cover, slope, percentage of soil fine sand and accumulated water flow. thematic plans were generated in a geographic information system (gis) environment. first, all the variables, except land use and cover, were described by continuous numerical plans in a raster structure.the land use and cover plan was also represented by numerical values associated with the weights attributed to each class, starting from a pairwise comparison matrix and using the analytical hierarchy process. a final field check was done to record evidence of erosive processes in the areas indicated as presenting the highest levels of fragility, i.e., sites with steep slopes, high percentage of soil fine sand, tendency to accumulate surface water flow, and sites of pastureland. the methodology used in the environmental problems diagnosis of the study area can be employed at places with similar relief, soil and climatic conditions.

Abstract: Las siguientes páginas tienen por finalidad dilucidar el proceder heideggeriano denominado destrucción o desmontaje [destruktion]. Esto se lleva a cabo, en primer lugar, poniendo en claro qué quiere decir, para el Heidegger de los a os veinte, el término "destrucción" y cuál es su relevancia filosófica, a partir de la exposición de aquellos anclajes que fundan su necesidad y la sustentan. En segundo lugar, se ejemplifica el proceso destructivo, de la mano del desmontaje de lo que el autor llama la conciencia filosófica . Finalmente, realizamos una exposición de los resultados del proceso de desmontaje e intentamos apro-piarnos del sentido filosófico más profundo de la destrucción.

Abstract: The invasion process involves overcoming certain barriers with negative effects on the biodiversity and ecosystem function. This is the case of the African dung beetle Digitonthophagus gazella, which was introduced in the United States and other countries in Central and South America to help in dung removal activity. The distribution of D. gazella has been documented in the Americas, but in Venezuela there is little information. Trying to understand the process of invasion of the Colombian-Venezuelan savannas and measure their potential impact, the information stored in collections and literature was collected. Five new state records were reported for Venezuela, as well as four scenarios of the process of introduction and establishment of this species in the region. Although the amount of records has increased, the number of individuals sampled is still incipient. The possible areas of invasion and the potential negative effects that the presence of this species exerts in these regions are also discussed. In addition, potential areas of invasion and negative effects of this species are discussed. Results emphasize the importance of generating models of the invasive process in order to design programs that monitor the effects incurred by the presence of D. gazella on native species and propose control and mitigation mechanisms.
The Glucuronyltransferase GlcAT-P Is Required for Stretch Growth of Peripheral Nerves in Drosophila

Abstract: During development, the growth of the animal body is accompanied by a concomitant elongation of the peripheral nerves, which requires the elongation of integrated nerve fibers and the axons projecting therein. Although this process is of fundamental importance to almost all organisms of the animal kingdom, very little is known about the mechanisms regulating this process. Here, we describe the identification and characterization of novel mutant alleles of GlcAT-P, the Drosophila ortholog of the mammalian glucuronyltransferase b3gat1. GlcAT-P mutants reveal shorter larval peripheral nerves and an elongated ventral nerve cord (VNC). We show that GlcAT-P is expressed in a subset of neurons in the central brain hemispheres, in some motoneurons of the ventral nerve cord as well as in central and peripheral nerve glia. We demonstrate that in GlcAT-P mutants the VNC is under tension of shorter peripheral nerves suggesting that the VNC elongates as a consequence of tension imparted by retarded peripheral nerve growth during larval development. We also provide evidence that for growth of peripheral nerve fibers GlcAT-P is critically required in hemocytes; however, glial cells are also important in this process. The glial specific repo gene acts as a modifier of GlcAT-P and loss or reduction of repo function in a GlcAT-P mutant background enhances VNC elongation. We propose a model in which hemocytes are required for aspects of glial cell biology which in turn affects the elongation of peripheral nerves during larval development. Our data also identifies GlcAT-P as a first candidate gene involved in growth of integrated peripheral nerves and therefore establishes Drosophila as an amenable in-vivo model system to study this process at the cellular and molecular level in more detail.
ISOMERIZACIóN DEL 1-CICLOHEXILOCTANO EN ZEOLITAS H-ZSM-22 Y H-Y

Abstract: we studied the isomerization mechanism of 1-cycle-hexyloctane either in gas phase or inside zeolites using quantum models. in the gas phase the reaction was simulated following the classical scheme via carbocations. on the other hand, the isomerization reaction was modeled with 1-cycle-hexyloctane inside hzsm-22 and h-y acid zeolites (condensed phase). we used the oniom(b3lyp/6-31g: uff) hybrid method to study such behavior in both zeolites. our results show that the reaction follows different pathways when the simulations are performed either in gas phase or within the zeolites pores. such differences show the importance of quantum confinement inside microporous materials.
