The author of this article examines the implementation and development of school education in the early decades of nineteenth Catalonia, specifically from the arrival of the Napoleonic troops in 1808 to the consolidation of the liberal reform in 1845. The paper continues on with a chronological analysis of the most far-reaching political, legal and cultural events, followed by an in-depth analysis of educational thought of this extensive period that the author

Abstract: ansconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy with tissue plasminogen activator, gas and intravitreal bevacizumab in the management of predominantly hemorrhagic age-related macular degeneration Original Research (4853) Total Article Views Authors: Luis Arias, Jordi Monés Published Date February 2010 Volume 2010:4 Pages 67 - 72 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.2147/OPTH.S8635 Luis Arias1,2, Jordi Monés1 1Institut de la Màcula i de la Retina, Centro Médico Teknon, Barcelona; 2Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona Purpose: To determine the efficacy and safety of treating predominantly hemorrhagic age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy (TSV), tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), and intravitreal bevacizumab. Methods: Retrospective study, consecutive case series. Patients with acute hemorrhagic AMD treated with 25- or 23-gauge TSV, subretinal or intravitreal tPA, fluid-air-SF6 exchange and intravitreal injection of bevacizumab. All operations were performed within the first 5 days after the start of symptoms, which consisted of visual acuity (VA) loss and central scotoma. Results: Fifteen eyes from 15 patients were included. The patients’ mean age was 79.6 years, and the mean follow-up was 11.8 months. Five patients (33%) were receiving oral anticoagulant treatment. At baseline, the mean VA (logMAR values) was 1.5 (20/640 Snellen equivalent). At the last follow-up visit, the mean VA was 1.1 (20/250) (P < 0.0001; paired t-test). The submacular hemorrhage was successfully displaced in all the cases. Complications consisted of three cases of vitreous hemorrhage and a tear or the retinal pigment epithelium. Twelve cases (80%) did not require further treatment during the follow-up period. Conclusion: A surgical approach with 25- or 23-gauge TSV, tPA, SF6 and intravitreal bevacizumab is an efficacious and safe procedure in patients with hemorrhagic AMD. Early treatment is advisable for obtaining the optimal outcome.

Patients: Observational case report. Methods: A patient with CNV on the border of an inferior staphyloma associated with tilted disc syndrome was imaged using fluorescein angiography, autofluorescence and spectral domain optical coherence tomography, and treated with intravitreal injections of ranibizumab. Results: The patient received 3 ranibizumab injections during the 9-month follow-up. The visual acuity improved from 20/40 to 20/32 and the foveal thickness reduced from 470 microns to 248 microns. The angiograms showed resolution of leakage associated with CNV. There were no adverse events. Conclusion: Intravitreal ranibizumab is an efficacious and safe treatment in the management of choroidal neovascularization on the border of an inferior staphyloma associated with tilted disc syndrome.

Distortion maps for genus two curves

Mathematics , 2006,
Abstract: Distortion maps are a useful tool for pairing based cryptography. Compared with elliptic curves, the case of hyperelliptic curves of genus g > 1 is more complicated since the full torsion subgroup has rank 2g. In this paper we prove that distortion maps always exist for supersingular curves of genus g>1 and we construct distortion maps in genus 2 (for embedding degrees 4,5,6 and 12).
Spain and the Western Sahara: the Political Party Dimension
Jordi Vaquer i Fanés
Revista CIDOB d'Afers Internacionals , 2007,
Abstract: Since the Spanish army’s hasty withdrawal from Western Sahara in 1975, the two main parties since Spain acquired its democracy have differed over what stance should be taken with respect to the Sahara issue. The aim of this article is to establish to what extentthis is the result of the opposing government/opposition dynamic and how far it is a result of the parties’ own stances, by analysing the evolution of their attitudes and approaches with respect to the Sahara issue. The hypothesis is that the Spanish parties’ position with respect to Algeria and Morocco was initially very much determined by their view of the Sahara issue, but that there has been an inversion of this attitude. Thus at present, opposing stances on the Sahara issue are mainly the result of different views on Spain’s interests in the Maghreb region and, above all, of different ideas about which country Morocco or Algeria should benefit most from bilateral relations.
