Abstract: a data set with 16,592 records from the brazilian zebu breeders association obtained from 1978 to 1994, was used to estimate genetic parameters for preweaning average daily gain (adg) and number of days to gain 160 kg (d160) in gyr cattle. the (co)variance components and heritabilities were estimated by the restricted maximum likelihood derivative free method. two models were used: the first one considered contemporary group (cg) as fixed effect and additive direct and maternal genetic effects, maternal permanent environment and error as random effect. model 2 considered the same effects of 1 but the covariance between the genetic direct and maternal effects was assumed to be zero. estimated heritability values using model 1 were 0.11; 0.04; 0.11 and 0.07 for adg (direct effect), adg (maternal effect), d160 (direct effect), and d160 (maternal effect), respectivelly, and 0.12, 0.05, 0.10 and 0.05 considering model 2 for adg (direct effect), adg (maternal effect), d160 (direct effect), and d160 (maternal effect), respectivelly. the likelihood ratio test was used to compare these models and were not significant. the proportional residual variances were 76 and 80% for adg and d160, respectively for both models. the hight values determined for the residual variance indicate the need to improve the breeding environment, such as standartization of manegement groups in order to get definition of contemporary group.

Abstract: two different preweaning selection criteria in gyr cattle: average daily gain from birth to weaning (adg) and number of days to gain 160 kg from birth to weaning (d160) were evaluated in this study. records from the brazilian zebu breeders association obtained from 1978 to 1994, were studied. (co)variance components and heritabilities were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood derivative free method, and expected breeding values (ebv) were predicted using an single trait animal model. in the model, contemporary group was considered as fixed effect and direct and maternal genetic, permanent environment and error as random effects. the covariance between the genetic direct and maternal genetic effects was assumed to be zero. pearson's and spearman's correlations of direct and maternal breeding values for adg and d160 were estimated. estimated heritability values were 0.12, 0.05, 0.10 and 0.05 for adg (direct effect), adg (maternal effect), d160 (direct effect), and d160 (maternal effect), respectivelly. the genetic correlation estimates between adg and d160 for direct (0.86) and maternal effects (0.88) showed a strong and positive association. rank correlation estimates were also high but not the unity, so changes occured in the animals rankings according to the trait adopted as the criterion. the relationship between the harmonic mean (h), arithmetic mean (a) and standard deviation (s) of adg preajusted for environmental and maternal effects was also studied according to linear and quadratic regression of s on the diffrence between a and h (a-h). the results indicated that similarly to h, d160 favoured sires with more homogeneous progeny.

Abstract: the aims of this research were to estimate the influence of age of dam at calving (ac), and julian date of birth (jdb) on weaning weight (ww) and preweaning average daily gain (adg) of gyr calves and adjustment factors for them. it was analyzed 10,685 and 18,339 records, on ww and adg of gyr calves, from the associa??o brasileira dos criadores de zebu data set belonging to 1229 and 1979 contemporary groups (cg), respectively. ac, for males, was fitted as a segmented polynomial quadratic-quadratic-quadratic with stage changing at 4.1, 12.7 for ww and 4.0, 8.2 years old for adg, and as a segmented polynomial quadratic-quadratic with state changing at 3.8 years old for female. jdb was fitted as a segmented polynomial quadratic-quadratic with state changing at 126 days for ww and 167 days for adg. the results showed that the adjustment factors for ac must be done separately, for males and females and for jdb, each season must be considered, so that the differences among them can be better observed. the adjustment factors to ac, for males, ranged from 0.94750 to 1.08033 for ww and 0.991714 to 1.07916 for adg and, for females from 0.90937 to 1.07415 for ww and 0.96055 to 1.14007 for adg. the adjustment factors to jdb ranged from 0.9256 to 1.0340 for ww and 0.9112 to 1.0551 for adg.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to analyze a data set with 205 records from a Nellore breed cattle, evaluating the influence of environmental factors on weaning weight adjusted to 205 days of age (W205), preweaning average daily gain (ADG) and number of days to gain 160 kg (D160). The data came from a farm in S o Paulo State and were collected from 2007 to 2010. The statistical analysis was accomplished using the least squares method, with a model that included the fixed effects of contemporary group, sire and cow age at calving, and error as random effect. The same model was used to analyze 124 records of weight adjusted to 90 days of age (W90). The effects of contemporary group and sire were significant. The cow age at calving was not significant for any performance trait analyzed, except for W90 (P < 0.05). The estimated means were 140.67 ± 20.08 kg, 0.539 ± 0.097 kg/day and 306.42 ± 55.84 days, for W205, ADG e D160, respectively. The weightless calves were born in February (115.65 kg) and the heaviest in July (156.18 kg). The males were 5.8% superior than females. The importance of non genetic effects indicates the need to consider them when estimating genetic parameters and breeding values for selection purpose. Clinical and immunological consequences of human T cell leukemia virus type-I and Schistosoma mansoni co-infection

Abstract: human t cell leukemia virus type-i (htlv-i) infection is associated with spontaneous t cell activation and uncontrolled lymphocyte proliferation. an exacerbated type-1 immune response with production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (interferon-g and tumor necrosis factor-a) is significantly higher in patients with myelopathy associated to htlv-i than in htlv-i asymptomatic carriers. in contrast with htlv-i, a chronic schistosoma mansoni infection is associated with a type-2 immune response with high levels of interleukin (il-4, il-5, and il-10) and low levels of ifn-g. in this study, clinical and immunological consequences of the htlv-i and s. mansoni infection were evaluated. the immune response in patients with schistosomiasis co-infected with htlv-i showed low levels of il-5 (p < 0.05) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells cultures stimulated with s. mansoni antigen (swap) and decreased swap-specific ige levels when compared with patients with only schistosomiasis (p < 0.05). liver fibrosis was mild in all htlv-i co-infected patients. immunological response was also compared in individuals who had only htlv-i infection with those who were co-infected with htlv-i and helminths (s. mansoni and strongyloides stercoralis). in patients htlv-i positive co-infected with helminths the ifn-g levels were lower than in individuals who had only htlv-i. moreover, there were fewer cells expressing ifn-g and more cells expressing il-10 in individuals co-infected with htlv-i and helminths. these dates indicate that htlv-i infection decrease type 2-response and ige synthesis and are inversely associated with the development of liver fibrosis. moreover, helminths may protect htlv-i infected patients to produce large quantities of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as ifn-g.

Abstract: Immunoproliferation assays, cytokine levels of unstimulated cultures, and flow cytometry analysis were used to evaluate the studied groups. Nonparametric tests (Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed ranks) were used to compare the difference between the groups.Although both groups showed great variability, HAM/TSP patients had higher spontaneous lymphoproliferation as well as higher IFN-γ levels in unstimulated supernatants when compared with asymptomatic carriers. Flow cytometry studies demonstrated a high frequency of inflammatory cytokine (IFN-γ and TNF-α) producing lymphocytes in HAM/TSP as compared to the asymptomatic group. This difference was accounted for mainly by an increase in CD8 cell production of these cytokines. Moreover, the HAM/TSP patients also expressed an increased frequency of CD28-/CD8+ T cells. Since forty percent of the asymptomatic carriers had spontaneous lymphoproliferation and IFN-γ production similar to HAM/TSP patients, IFN-γ levels were measured eight months after the first evaluation in some of these patients to observe if this was a transient or a persistent situation. No significant difference was observed between the means of IFN-γ levels in the first and second evaluation. The finding that a large proportion of HTLV-I carriers present similar immunological responses to those observed in HAM/TSP, strongly argues for further studies to evaluate these parameters as markers of HAM/TSP progression.Human T cell leukemia virus-type 1 (HTLV-I) infects an estimated 10 to 20 million people worldwide, making it a serious public healthy problem. The HTLV-1 infection has a high prevalence in Brazil, and Salvador, the capital of the state of Bahia, has the highest prevalence of HTLV-1 in the country in blood donors (1,35%) [1,2]. It is estimated that 95% of HTLV-I infected individuals are asymptomatic carriers. A small percentage of infected individuals (2 to 5%) develop adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) [3,4] or a chronic inf

Abstract: this study deals with the nursing curriculum, pedagogical practice and education. nowadays, this theme has taken up considerable space in academic debates. thus, this study aimed to get empirical knowledge and provide an analytical description of the academic reality of nursing education at santa cruz state university in the undergraduate nursing course. this is a descriptive study, which may provide a new view of the problem, with careful observation, description, and exploration of the situation aspects, interpreting the reality, without interfering in it and, consequently, being open to new studies. descriptive statistics with simple frequency and percentage calculation was applied. in summary, results indicate that professors and students have difficulties to evaluate the curriculum. in addition, the curriculum under study is characterized as a collection curriculum, with a pedagogical practice predominantly directed at the traditional model. hence, nursing education still shows features of the biomedical-technical model.

Abstract: objective: to identify clinical and immunological markers associated with htlv-i associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (ham/tsp). method: 237 htlv-i infected individuals were clinically assessed. they were classified according to the expanded disability status scale (edss) and osame?s motor disability score (omds). cytokine levels were determined in htlv-i seropositive individuals. results: 37 patients had ham/tsp. there was a correlation between the degrees of disability assessed by both scales. there was also a correlation between the duration of ham/tsp and the severity of disability assessed by either edss or omds. higher levels of ifn-g were detected in unstimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (pbmc) from ham/tsp patients as compared with htlv-i carriers. conclusion: this study shows the validity of the neurological scales to classify the degree of neurological disability in htlv-i carriers and suggests a progressive behavior of ham/tsp. this study also shows that ifn-g in pbmc supernatants are markers of ham/tsp.
