Abstract: objectives: to analyze the importance of natural killer cells, their killer immunoglobulin-like receptors (kir) and genes in autoimmunity and in the immune surveillance against infectious agents and stem cells transplantation. the characteristics and polymorphisms of the kir genes and receptors in the brazilian population is described. sources: textbooks, review articles and recent scientific articles are cited and listed in the references. summary of the findings: kir genes and haplotypes within a brazilian caucasian population were surveyed and analyzed to assess the future relationship of this system with diseases. of 116 voluntary bone marrow donors, we identified 32 genotypes with frequencies of a and b haplotypes of 51 and 49%, respectively. a comparative analysis was performed between these genotypes and those from other populations. conclusions: innate immunity is an important anti-infectious barrier in newborns. it is independent of both cellular and humoral immunity, can be faster and confers great advantage in early age. at the same time, it stimulates cd8 t lymphocytes to act and amplify the immunological protection network. nevertheless, as in the majority of situations in which immunity is activated, it can also be harmful, damaging the body through autoimmune mechanisms or even, through its absence, creating space for infectious agents to act free. our study of a control group for kir genotype and haplotypes in brazilian caucasoids could be used in future analyse of diseases related to these genes.
Mortalidade infantil evitável e fatores associados em Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, 2000-2003

Abstract: a case-control study was performed to investigate the association between the categories avoidable and non-avoidable death and socio-demographic, maternal reproductive, and neonatal status. the study used multivariate logistic regression according to a hierarchical model to analyze 1,139 infant deaths from 2000 to 2003. the variables sex, maternal age, number of live born infants, type of pregnancy, place of birth, and 5-minute apgar were not associated with avoidable deaths. however, maternal schooling < 3 years (rc = 1.56; 95%ci: 1.01-2.45); single mother (rc = 0.65; 95%ci: 0.49-0.86) or mother with a history of stillbirth (rc = 1.59; 95%ci: 1.01-2.48); congenital malformation (rc = 0.26; 95%ci: 0.18-0.37); cesarean section (rc = 1.52; 95%ci: 1.10-2.11), premature labor between 22 and 36 weeks (rc = 0.47; 95%ci: 0.34-0.65), birth weight < 2,500g (rc = 0.51; 95%ci: 0.32-0.79); and neonatal age < 6 days (rc = 0.62; 95%ci: 0.42-0.89) were significantly associated with avoidable death. these findings can help identify infants at increased risk.

Abstract: the aim of this paper is to present the results of an intervention research carried on in a public school for students with special needs in the city of rio de janeiro. in this school the youth make use of the photography in order to interact with their daily routine. on the basis of the photographic images created by them, the youth construct narratives showing a critical view of school environment. this research favoured a non conventional approach of the school, based upon the narratives and views produced by the students. actually a dialogue was engaged through the process of production and interpretation of the photographs, and this dialogue showed singular features to the special schools but also showed features shared by special and regular schools and propitiated a sensitive and critical analysis about the social interaction and the learning process.

Abstract: the paper analyses contemporary production of knowledge about the act of reading and writing, as well as the social, political and cultural conditionings that have led to changes in it. we focus on two aspects related to the issue: the impact of the supporting materials that have changed ways of reading and writing throughout time; and the challenges imposed on the dialogue between generations, brought about by the electronic revolution. we revisit concepts developed by mikhail bakhtin, casting new lights upon the present uses of language and text production mediated by electronic and digital supporting materials.

Abstract: the current paper aims to describe how rational and political factors in the decision-making process concerning budgeting of a great brazilian state-owned enterprise have taken place. in order to do so, a case study research has been made in which the same process was analyzed under different perspectives, using as theoretical background the allison's rational, organizational and political models. the utilized methodological procedures underlie descriptive and qualitative nature and the collected data, from different sources - in-depth interviews, observations and documents -, have been analyzed through a thematically categorical content analysis kind. the obtained results show a complex process where both rationality and politics have taken place and influenced decisions and the process per se. it is noticed that the budget, although being an idealized technology under instrumental rational premises and utilized to impose a mechanic behavior to organizational processes, has also a political dimension. this dimension takes its shape as far as the situations of decision become arenas where individuals and groups interact in different interests and approaches about the same problem.

Fotografar e narrar: a produ o do conhecimento no contexto da escola

Abstract: Este texto visa apresentar os resultados de pesquisa-interven o que vem sendo realizada em uma escola que atende a portadores de necessidades especiais na rede municipal de ensino básico da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, em que os jovens utilizam-se da imagem fotográfica para interagir de modo crítico com o cotidiano. Portanto, tendo por base a produ o livre de imagens fotográficas, os jovens criam narrativas que integram imagens e textos orais e escritos com o objetivo de construir uma consciência crítica do contexto escolar, compartilhada entre alunos e professores. Esta proposta de trabalho possibilitou-nos uma outra forma de aproxima o da realidade escolar, que se dá a partir do olhar e das narrativas constituídas pelos próprios alunos. O diálogo desencadeado no processo de produ o e leitura das fotografias revela características que aproximam e distinguem o contexto das escolas, especial e regular, e abre-nos uma perspectiva crítica e sensível de observa o e análise sobre a escola, o processo de ensino-aprendizado e de inclus o social.
