Abstract: eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a rare and heterogeneous disorder, with a variable clinical spectrum ranging between the presence of common gastrointestinal symptoms and occlusive pyloric or intestinal disease. it is characterized by inflammatory eosinophilic infiltration in at least one segment of the digestive tract and is probably underdiagnosed, as it poses some approach problems. intraluminal duodenal diverticulum, a rare congenital malformation, which is usually found incidentally in radiological studies, is a ‘‘cul de sac’’ structure projecting into de duodenal lumen. we revise these two entities, and a possible relation between them, by discussing a case presenting with fever of unknown origin, with scarce and uncharacteristic symptoms.

Kaons and pions in strange quark matter
Pedro Costa,Maria C. Ruivo
Physics , 2001, DOI: 10.1209/epl/i2002-00272-8
Abstract: The behavior of kaons and pions in strange quark matter in weak equilibrium, is investigated within the SU(3) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio [NJL] model. This work focuses a region of high densities where the behavior of mesons has not been explored in the framework of this model. It is found that above the density where strange valence quarks appear in the medium, $\rho = 3.8 \rho_0$, a change of behavior of different observables is observed indicating a tendency to the restoration of flavor symmetry. In particular, the splitting between charge multiplets, $K^+, K^-; K^0, {\bar K^0} {and} \pi^+, \pi^-$ decrease and the low energy modes with quantum numbers of $K^-, \bar K^0 {and} \pi^+$, which are excitations of the Fermi sea, are less relevant than for lower densities.

Abstract: Though poorly studied, sand is an environment with an extended degree of interaction with man. Enterococcal strains can be found in sand but we do not know to what extent these ubiquitous opportunistic nosocomial pathogens isolated from sand carry antimicrobial resistances and virulence traits. In an attempt to fill in this knowledge gap, two distinct types of sand (beach and children playground) were examined concerning composition in enterococcal species, genetic diversity of isolates and abundance of resistance to antimicrobials and virulence traits. Five different species were found, namely Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus hirae, Enterococcus flavescens and Enterococcus casseliflavus. Although genetic diversity was evident, two different E. faecium clones, common to the two types of sand, were detected, suggesting the existence of clones well adapted to this specific environment or from a common source. E. faecium was associated with multiple antibiotic resistances, including to fluoroquinolones and tetracycline that are commonly used by veterinarians and clinicians. Among the multiresistant E. faecium strains from beach sand, two were from sequence type (ST) 442, which belongs to the wide-spread Hospital-adapted clade CC17. They both carried the esp gene and the genomic island associated with CC17. The other virulence factors screened were disseminated among E. faecalis strains, but seldom detected in the other species, evidencing the existence, in these environments, of E. faecalis strains carrying the same virulence factors as the clinical ones. The present work thus stresses the need to follow-up the presence and characterization of enterococcal strains from both beach and children playground sands and of including these environments in the epidemiological global analysis of enterococcal isolates.

Abstract: The increasing volume of data in the area of environmental sciences needs analysis and interpretation. Among the challenges generated by this “data deluge”, the development of efficient strategies for the knowledge discovery is an important issue. Here, statistical and tools from computational intelligence are applied to analyze large data sets from meteorology and climate sciences. Our approach allows a geographical mapping of the statistical property to be easily interpreted by meteorologists. Our data analysis comprises two main steps of knowledge extraction, applied successively in order to reduce the complexity from the original data set. The goal is to identify a much smaller subset of climatic variables that might still be able to describe or even predict the probability of occurrence of an extreme event. The first step applies a class comparison technique: p-value estimation. The second step consists of a decision tree (DT) configured from the data available and the p-value analysis. The DT is used as a predictive model, identifying the most statistically significant climate variables of the precipitation intensity. The methodology is employed to the study the climatic causes of an extreme precipitation events occurred in Alagoas and Pernambuco States (Brazil) at June/2010.

Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2012.23054
Abstract: In this note, we start to claim that established marriages can be heavilydestabilized when the population of existing couples is enriched by thearrival of new candidates to marriage. Afterwards, we discuss briefly howstability concepts can be extended to account for entry and exit phenomenaaffecting the composition of the marriage market.
Metáforas e imagens dos formadores de professores na área da informática aplicada à educa??o

Abstract: the focus of this research is the gap between the formation of educational computing (ec) teachers and their further experience. the main hypothesis is that, among ec teacher formers, there is a certain representation of the educational model and a conception on the beneficial aspects of digital technologies that would be automatically transferred to the future teachers' practice. an investigation was carried out with the 21 teachers of the discipline "computing and education" at the catholic university of goiás, with the use of techniques of free word association, semi-structured interviews and focus groups. the nucleus of the identified representations shows the computer as a generator of educational changes, and educational computing as the agent of pedagogical changes. this analogy becomes an important reference that shapes formers' discourse by means of metaphors which constitute their imagination.
A "lei da vida": confirma??o, evas?o escolar e reinven??o da identidade entre os pomeranos

Educa??o e Pesquisa , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-97022001000100005
Abstract: the article deals with the meaning of school drop out in the life of a small comunity of rural workers descendants of pomeranians - immigrants originally from the northern german. ninety percent of the district population descend of pomeranians that arrived in 1847. although the state of espírito santo did not receive any more germans after the 1870s, these communities have preserved their dialect, celebrations, cultural and marital habits and the narrative of peasant oral traditions. in the context of brazilian immigration, no other ethnic group as the pomeranians in espírito santo settled in such homogeneous and compact areas, contributing to modify the landowning structure and the rural life of the state where they established themselves. this work takes up the relationship between the use of several languages (portuguese, german, and pomeranian) and the lutheran religiosity in the daily life of the group, the patterns of land ownership inheritance and the consequent importance of these elements in the confirmatory teaching carried out by the lutheran and missouri churches. these aspects result in an understanding of the social and educational values that are more important to the group in the reproduction of their peasant condition. the group representations about the role played by the school, the teacher and the minister are examined, as well as the relationship between such representations and the elements that help preserving the group?s peasant ethos: obedience to the rules of reciprocity, conformity to the principles of hierarchy (paternal and clerical authority), and solidarity to relatives and neighbors.
