Abstract: Computerized systems are being increasingly used with the purpose of improving the treatment and integration of the medical area, computerizing work processes in the health sector. It is therefore necessary to obtain a broad comprehension of social and technical imbrications implied in the development and use of these systems, and to go beyond simplistic assumptions that benefits obtained with computerization result solely from the technology employed. To provide effective instruments for the achievement of this understanding, this work comments on theories and practices related to the concept of formalization in the context of development of computerized systems, examining their prerequisites and summarizing them in a reference chart called formalization axis. Supported by recent works carried out in the area of Science and Technology, a perspective starts to emerge on formalization processes as the association of different elements in social and technical networks, which then create a co-evolution between software and organizational practices.

FLEXIBILIDADE E MODELAGEM DE PROCESSOS DE NEGóCIO: UMA RELA O MULTIDIMENSIONAL

Abstract: Over the last few years, Business Process Management (BPM) has achieved increasing popularity and dissemination. An analysis of the underlying assumptions of BPM shows that it pursues two apparently contradicting goals: on the one hand it aims at formalising work practices into business process models; on the other hand, it intends to confer flexibility to the organization – i.e. to maintain its ability to respond to new and unforeseen situations. This paper analyses the relationship between formalisation and flexibility in business process modelling by means of an empirical case study of a BPM project in an aircraft maintenance company. A qualitative approach is adopted based on the Actor-Network Theory. The paper offers two major contributions: (a) it illustrates the sociotechnical complexity involved in BPM initiatives; (b) it points towards a multidimensional understanding of the relation between formalization and flexibility in BPM projects.
IMPLANTATION OF A MANAGEMENT INTEGRATED SYSTEM FOLLOWING THE SOFTWARE AS A SERVICE (SAAS) MODEL: A CASE STUDY INVOLVING A SMALL ENGINEERING FIRM IMPLANTA O DE UM SISTEMA INTEGRADO DE GEST O NO MODELO SOFTWARE AS A SERVICE (SAAS): UM ESTUDO DE CASO EM UMA PEQUENA EMPRESA DE ENGENHARIA

Abstract: This paper presents a case study focusing on the implications of the deployment of an integrated information system based on SaaS (Software as a Service) within a small engineering company. We build our theoretical framework based on literature concerning ERP systems (Enterprise Resource Planning) and SaaS, so as to perform an empirical research that relies upon interviews with the employees as a data collection technique. Our results show benefits and difficulties for the company, which were not observed in the literature. The main perceived advantage of the system was its low cost. From the organizational point of view, the process redesign proved to be a simple task, since the company was already certified according to standard ISO 9001 before the system was implemented.

Abstract: this article evaluates social implications of the "siga" health care information system (his) in a public health care organization in the city of s?o paulo. the evaluation was performed by means of an in-depth case study with patients and staff of a public health care organization, using qualitative and quantitative data. on the one hand, the system had consequences perceived as positive such as improved convenience and democratization of specialized treatment for patients and improvements in work organization. on the other hand, negative outcomes were reported, like difficulties faced by employees due to little familiarity with it and an increase in the time needed to schedule appointments. results show the ambiguity of the implications of his in developing countries, emphasizing the need for a more nuanced view of the evaluation of failures and successes and the importance of social contextual factors.

Abstract: objective: to correlate serum preoperative and postoperative interleukin-6 and interleukin-10 levels in patients undergoing laparotomy versus laparoscopic cholecystectomy. methods: from a total of 20 patients, 18 were included in the study, nine underwent cholecystectomy by laparoscopy and the other nine by laparotomy. serum concentrations of il-6 and il-10 were measured in both groups. blood samples were obtained in the times of 24 hours preoperatively and four, 12 and 24 hours after the procedure. the groups were compared regarding age, gender, body mass index (bmi), duration of anesthesia and operation. results: there was no significant statistical differences between groups related to age, gender, bmi, duration of anesthesia and operation. the comparison between the two procedurs demonstrated statistical differences for il-6 in time 12 hours after operation (218.64 pg/ml laparotomic versus 67.71 pg/ml laparoscopic, p = 0.0003) and for il-10 in time 24 hours after the procedure (24.46 pg/ml open versus 10.17 pg/qml laparoscopic, p <0.001). conclusion: there was an increase in plasma levels of interleukin-6 and 10 after surgical trauma with a significant increase in levels of interleukins in the laparotomic group in comparison with the laparoscopic group.
