Abstract: the aim of this paper is to show the possibilities of integration between the teaching of differential calculus and operational research. the integration is obtained with some small changes in the way that calculus is traditionally presented and some major changes in operational research classes. we show that, with the above-mentioned changes, operational research can play an important role in the transition between the first half and the last part of the production engineering courses.

In this paper, we use DEA to measure the NBA basketball teams’ efficiency in seasons 2006-2007, 2007-2008, 2008-2009 and 2009-2010. In this context, each team is a DMU; we select the payroll and the average attendance to be the inputs while the wins and the average points per game to be the outputs. First, in order to obtain benchmarks, we measure the DMUs efficiency through classic DEA BCC model with an assurance region for each one of the four seasons individually and together. When we consider the four seasons together, we may analyse whether the performance of each team increases or decreases over time. Next, we evaluate the teams cross efficiency by DEA game to consider that there is no cooperation among DMUs. This approach also improves the efficiencies discrimination.

Abstract: This study aims to identify the best manufacturing plants by the criterion of efficiency in the useof chemicals to separate oil, water and gas in a primary processing plant oil. Thus, we evaluated theefficiency of thirty stationary production units operated by a concessionaire of oil in the Campos Basin, in2009. The efficiency was measured with the methodology of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) through itsclassical model DEA-CCR, with the help of software called SIAD. The results were identified by analysisunits which are references for use efficiency desemulsificantes for the treatment of crude oil.

Abstract: The Fluminense Federal University has at present, fourteen Engineering Courses in three different Campi. Though the pupils have carried out the same admission exam, they were admitted in the courses with different marks. That means that the freshmen have different knowledge levels and present different difficulties along his studies in the first period. One of the reasons what one points for the difference between the students knowledges is the quantity of candidates for each course. Many other reasons can be pointed to explain the students performance along the course. In this work, we develop a performance measure using DEA (Date Envelopment Analysis) in which, each course is valued in accordance with the capacity of attracting good pupils. Such a measure will be called selectivity. For that we used a DEA-BCC (Banker, Charnes and Cooper) model, also known as DEA-VRS (Variable Returns to Scale). An input and two outputs were used. The only input is the relation candidate/place and the outputs are the cut marks in each phase of the exam. Due to the biggest importance of the final mark we introduced a cone ratio restriction

Abstract: Soccer is famous for unpredictable match results. Despite that fact, it isn`t odd to point that great teamsthat usually keep high technical level along many competitions have most of the times conditions tocompete for titles. The DEA approach evaluates the efficiency analysis of the teams by their actionsduring the game, that way inefficient teams may identify what aspects of performance are low and findout where they could search for improvements. On this paper, variable selection was applied forchoosing which aspects inside the field game are more relevant for 3 different DEA models, that evaluateteams on three different goals: Defense, Connection and Attack.

Abstract: In Brazil, soccer is a national passion and a source of pride for Brazilians. An enshrined sport, respected by people. The World Cup, a men's soccer tournament held every four years by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), is the largest international single sport competition. The choice of the seeded teams – 8 teams considered strong that must be allocated in distinct groups – is an important decision that must be established for the championship. One of these 8 teams is, mandatorily, the host country, which, in the 2014 World Cup, will be Brazil. In this article we used the methods of Borda, Condorcet and Copeland to order the countries and set the other 7 teams to be seeded in the 2014 World Cup.

Abstract: In this work it was developed a hybrid multicriteria method to help the decision maker, which was lately applied to a decision problem associated to the purchase of an apartment. This work goes from concepts related to the Theory of knowledge and fundamentals related to decision processes with a multicriteria approach to the choice of the methods that will be integrated. The hybrid method developed integrates the MACBETH method- which allows that weight intervals to the criteria used in the decision be established- with the Entropy method. The Entropy method was used in the creation of this hybrid method to help to determine, within the MACBETH intervals, the value of each weight. To do that it was built an algorithm and an excel sheet that executes this algorithm. The hybrid method was applied in a case study. It is also discussed the particular aspects related to the choice of an apartment. The result of the application of this method was compared with the result obtained using other methods.

Abstract: The Brazilian aviation has suffered high shifts since the sector’s deregulation occurred in the beginning of XXI century. The main one was the admission of Gol Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes in the market, the first Latin America company to work with the low-cost, low-fare concept. Also encouraged by the confirmation of the internet as a trading channel of air tickets, the sector started to experience an incitation of passengers` competition. As for the consumer`s view, in some routes, the choice options increased. This study aimed at the analysis of the pre-selected air routes` efficiency, based on the concepts of Data Envelopment Analysis, by the relations of price and time journey versus the distance crossed, understood respectively as cost and benefits. In this way, it was possible to identify, by the focus of the passenger, which routes and companies has the best performance in this scenario of huge market competitiveness.
A Study of Highways Performance with a Molp-Dea Model and an Interactive Tri-Criteria Linear Programming Package (Trimap)

Brazilian Journal of Operations & Production Management , 2010,
Abstract: This paper deals with the evaluation of a few Brazilian privatised highways. We use Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) for that. As the number of highways is too small, we need to use an additional method to avoid ties in the evaluation index. The MCDEA model of Li and Reeves (a tri-objective model) is adequate to solve this problem. The authors suggest the extension of the CCR model, considering two extra objective functions, i.e. a min-max function, corresponding to a measure of equity and a min-sum function, favouring some sort of overall evaluation of the DMUs, from the point of view of the DMU under analysis. The graphic decomposition of the weighting space (used in TRIMAP as an operational tool), the possibility of introducing constraints on the objective function values during the search automatically translated into the weighting space make it specially adequate to explore the MCDEA model.
