Siqueira, Ivan Cláudio Pereira;
Pandaemonium Germanicum , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1982-88372011000100013
Abstract: jo?o guimar?es rosa was strongly influenced by the german literature, philosophy and music. the german tradition and its methods of associations suggested him to develop his own methodologies from the substrates provided by traditional brazilian songs. this paper shows the general effects of musical techniques in short-stories of sagarana, the influence of heidegger's philosophy and the use of the concept of wagner's grundmotiv in "o burrinho pedrês" and "sarapalha". finally, it is proposed some connections between "a hora e vez de augusto matraga" (rosa) and parsifal, by wagner.

Sarah Maria Forte Diogo,Marli Fantini Scarpelli
Revista Recorte , 2012,
Abstract: This article analyzes the short story "Horse Portrait" (Tutaméia – terceiras estórias, 1967), written by Jo o Guimar es Rosa. We will discuss the relationship of the characterswith reality and representation within the narrative, focusing on the photograph of thehorse and the meanings that are added to it. We will seek to show how the signs in some passages of light and shadow bind to the representation, which destabilizes the most of the other characters and objects depicted. To this end, dialogue with Plato, Merleau-Ponty, Blanchot and Barthes whenever we deem this necessary dialogue.
A travessia perigosa: Grande sert?o: veredas e Doutor Fausto em leitura dialógica
Vejmelka, Marcel;
Estudos Avan?ados , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142009000100020
Abstract: jo?o guimar?es rosa's grande sert?o: veredas and thomas mann's doctor faustus are interpreted in form of a dialog guided by common themes - like faust and the pact -, but primarily by convergences on the narrative level - like the uses of allegory and the treatment of spatial metaphors in order to critically reflect history. after a short comment on already existing comparative studies of the two novels, i will analyze the above mentioned aspects by three examples: the presence of the faust tradition in the novels, riobaldo and adrian leverkühn dealing with the devil as allegories of 20th century brazil and germany, and the narrative functions of the fictitious town of kaisersaschern and the sert?o's liso do su?uar?o.

The Paradigm at the Crossroads in the Middle of the Whirlwind: Arnold Schoenberg, Jo o Guimar es Rosa, and the Animating Faust
Christopher T. Lewis
Ellipsis , 2011,
Abstract: In the poem Dichtung und Wahrheit, Anthony Hecht explores the limits of representative art in the attempt to transcend the dichotomy between life and fixture, citing the need for a “Faust” to animate representation. Through the prism of cyberneticist Gregory Bateson’s theories on advanced levels of learning and controlling paradigm shifts, this article explores how the Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg and the Brazilian writer Jo o Guimar es Rosa both exemplify Hecht’s concept of an animating Faust. It juxtaposes Schoenberg’s twelve-tone method with Guimar es Rosa’s transrealism in their respective contexts, culminating in a comparison of the latter’s novel Grande sert o: veredas with the former’s opera Moses und Aron in order to show how they break out of the paradigms of their respective periods, transporting the reader/ listener to the unknowable place that Guimar es Rosa called the “third bank of the river.”
