Expression of a Functional Recombinant Human Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor from Transgenic Rice Seeds

Abstract: Basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) is an important member of the FGF gene family. It is widely used in clinical applications for scald and wound healing in order to stimulate cell proliferation. Further it is applied for inhibiting stem cell differentiation in cultures. Due to a shortage of plasma and low expression levels of recombinant rbFGF in conventional gene expression systems, we explored the production of recombinant rbFGF in rice grains ( Oryza sativa bFGF, OsrbFGF). An expression level of up to 185.66 mg/kg in brown rice was obtained. A simple purification protocol was established with final recovery of 4.49% and resulting in a yield of OsrbFGF reaching up to 8.33 mg/kg OsrbFGF. The functional assay of OsrbFGF indicated that the stimulating cell proliferation activity on NIH/3T3 was the same as with commercialized rbFGF. Wound healing in vivo of OsrbFGF is equivalent to commercialized rbFGF. Our results indicate that rice endosperm is capable of expressing small molecular mass proteins, such as bFGF. This again demonstrates that rice endosperm is a promising system to express various biopharmaceutical proteins.
Does Benefit Relationship Affect Analysts’ Earnings Forecast?—Evidence from Chinese Stock Market  [PDF]

Abstract: Under the information asymmetrical theory, the Chinese securities analysts are affected by many benefit factors, so the purpose of the study is trying to figure out what benefit elements and how to affect analysts’ earnings forecasts. Using data from 2012 to 2015, the author creatively quantifies interest factors, and does the empirical analysis. Regression results indicate that the closer relationship between securities analysts and the listed companies management or institutional investors, the greater accuracy of their earnings forecasts. Besides, analysts’ reputation exists a negative correlation between earnings forecasts accuracy. Furthermore, securities’ underwriting relationships have no significant influence on the accuracy of analysts’ earnings forecasts, but the underwriting analysts are more likely to overestimate earnings per share of the target companies.
Dust Effect on the Performance of Wind Turbine Airfoils  [PDF]

Abstract: The full two-dimensional Navier-Stokes algorithm and the SST k-? turbulence model were used to investigate incom-pressible viscous flow past the wind turbine two-dimensional airfoil under clean and roughness surface conditions. The NACA 63-430 airfoil is chosen to be the subject, which is widely used in wind turbine airfoil and generally located at mid-span of the blade with thickness to chord length ratio of about 0.3. The numerical simulation of the airfoil under clean surface condition has been done. As a result, the numerical results had a good consistency with the experimental data. The wind turbine blade surface dust accumulation according to the operational periods in natural environment has been taken into consideration. Then, the lift coefficients and the drag coefficients of NACA 63-430 airfoil have been computed under different roughness heights, different roughness areas and different roughness locations. The role that roughness plays in promoting premature transition to turbulence and flow separation has been verified by the numeri-cal results. The trends of the lift coefficients and the drag coefficients with the roughness height and roughness area increasing have been obtained. What’s more, the critical values of roughness height, roughness area, and roughness location have been proposed. Furthermore, the performance of the airfoil under different operational periods has been simulated, and an advice for the period of cleaning wind turbine blades is proposed. As a result, the numerical simula-tion method has been verified to be economically available for investigation of the dust effect on wind turbine airfoils.

The Effect of Graphene/Ag Nanoparticles Addition on the Performances of Organic Solar Cells  [PDF]

Graphene/Ag nanoparticles (GAg) were fabricated via a facile method, employing graphite oxide as a precursor of graphene sheet (GNS), AgNO3 as a precursor of Ag nanoparticles, and sodium citrate as a reducing and stabilizing agent. We synthesized three kinds of GAg as GAg-1, GAg-2 and GAg-3. We introduced high electron mobility GAg into the active layer of polymer solar cell. The cell structure was ITO/PEDOT:PSS/P3HT:PCBM:GAg/Ca/Al. The weight ratio of P3HT:PCBM:GAg of active layer is 1:1:0.01. We study the effect of GAg addition on the photovoltaic performance. We use the UV-Vis, SPM, FE-SEM and solar simulator to measure the absorbance, roughness, surface morphology, and power conversion efficiency (PCE), respectively. From these results, we found that the fill factor (FF) and PCE of the cells with GNS or GAg are always higher than those of cell without GNS or GAg. The cell with GAg-2 had the highest short circuit current density (Jsc) of 8.56 mA/cm2, an increase of 20.2%, the highest fill factor (FF) of 0.56, an increase of 14.3% and the highest PCE of 2.78%. This is a 24.7% increase in efficiency compared to the cell without GNS or GAg. These improvements were due to the high carrier mobility of grapheme.

Abstract: In this paper, the existence and uniqueness of local solutions to the initial and boundary value problem of a class of parabolic system related to the p-Laplacian are studied. The regularization method is used to construct a sequence of approximation solutions, with the help of monotone iteration technique, then we get the existence of solution of a regularized system. By the use of a standard limiting process, the existence of the local solutions of the system is obtained. Finally, the uniqueness of the solution is also proven.
Governance, Corruption, and the Informal Economy  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper uses data from 23 Sub-Saharan countries to analyze the relationship between governance, corruption, and the size of the informal economy. The results show that corruption, the quality of governance, the quality of institutional settings, and the unemployment rates are major determinants of the size of the informal economy. More specifically, it is found that a high level of corruption and poor institutional settings favor an increase of the informal economy. The unemployment rate is negatively related to the size of the informal economy, and greater fiscal freedom and business freedom are associated with a larger informal economy, while monetary freedom reduces the size of the informal sector.
Effect of job satisfaction on burnout among physicians: A survey study in urban public medical institutions in Hubei province, China  [PDF]

Abstract: Objectives: Chinese physicians are being loaded with the enormous psychological pressure and so tend to be susceptible to burnout. Little is known on the relationship between job satisfaction and burnout for physicians from urban public medical institutions. We aim to describe the degree of burnout and evaluate the impact of job satisfaction on burnout. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in March 2010 in Hubei province, central China. The job satisfaction and burnout instruments were obtained by modifying the Chinese Physicians’ Job Satisfaction Questionnaire and the Chinese Maslach Burnout Inventory, respectively. Such statistical methods as one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and GLM-univariate were employed. Results: The observed mean and burnout incidence on emotional exhaustion (3.45 ± 0.75, 66.99%) and depersonalization (3.56 ± 0.76, 68.64%) were high, but reduced personal accomplishment (2.18 ± 0.56, 5.79%) was low. The distribution of the degree of overall burnout was: 3.2% (severe), 48.2% (moderate), 35.4% (mild) and 13.2% (zero). Less the development level of urban area and higher the grade of medical institution was, more severe physicians’ burnout was. Job-itself satisfaction (b1 = -0.166, b2 = -0.056), job rewards satisfaction (b1 = -0.084, b2 = -0.150) and medical practicing environment satisfaction (b1 = -0.096, b2 = -0.319) were identified as significant negative predictors of emotional exhaustion (R2 = 0.35) and also of depersonalization (R2 = 0.46). Only the job-itself satisfaction (b3 = -0.355) contributed to reduced personal accomplishment (R2 = 0.40). significantly Conclusions: Occupational burnout, especially emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, is common and serious among Chinese physicians. Several, but not all dimensions of job satisfaction, which prove to have predictive effects on burnout, should be paid more attention to in order to improve physicians’ psychological health.
Cytotoxic T-Lymphocyte Associated Antigen 4 Polymorphisms and Asthma Risk: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Background A number of studies assessed the association of cytotoxic T-lymphocyte associated antigen 4 (CTLA-4) gene polymorphisms with asthma in different populations. However, the results were contradictory. We performed a meta-analysis to examine the association between CTLA-4 polymorphisms and asthma susceptibility. Methods Pubmed, EMBASE, HuGE Navigator, and Wanfang Database were searched. Data were extracted independently by two reviewers. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the strength of associations. Results Seventeen studies involving 6378 cases and 8674 controls were included. Significant association between +49 A/G polymorphism and asthma was observed for AA vs. AG+GG (OR = 1.18, 95% CI 1.01–1.37, P = 0.04). There were no significant associations between ?318 C/T, ?1147 C/T, CT60 A/G, ?1722 C/T, or rs926169 polymorphisms and asthma risk. Conclusions This meta-analysis suggested that the +49 A/G polymorphism in CTLA-4 was a risk factor for asthma.
Solder Joints Detection Method Based on Surface Recovery

Abstract: Machine vision has been widely used in various industrial productions. However, the study for solder joints detection is not enough. This paper presents a solder joints detection method based on surface recovery. For a single gray-scale image, using shape-from-shading (SFS) technology, the surface of the solder joints is recovered. According to the shape distribution, the quality of solder joints is discriminated. In order to improve the accuracy of recovery for real images, hybrid illumination model is introduced and a reflection-component estimation method based on simulated annealing algorithm is designed. Then recovery process of the algorithm is improved. Compared to other detection methods based on two-dimensional images, this method provides more information about explicit physical meaning and make detailed quantitative analysis for solder joints easier. At the same time, even for defect that is difficult to detect, this method also has important research value.
