A Case Report on Eosinophilic Meningitis Caused by Angiostrongylus cantonensis

Abstract: Angiostrongylus cantonensis is the most common cause of eosinophilic meningitis in humans. It is usually caused by ingestion of raw or inadequately cooked intermediate hosts or food contaminated with infective third-stage larvae. We describe a case of eosinophilic meningitis caused by A. cantonensis in a male Chinese patient. The patient had a history of eating raw fish and snail. We describe the clinical features of the patient, the diagnostic process and treatments. We also provide a brief update for physicians on the characteristics, diagnosis and treatment of eosinophilic meningitis caused by A. cantonensis, with particular emphasis on the update of prevalence and treatment of the disease in China.
Electron counting and a large family of two-dimensional semiconductors

Abstract: Comparing with the conventional semiconductors, the choice of the two dimensional semiconductor (2DSC) materials is very limited. Based on proper electron counting, we propose a large family of 2DSCs, all adopting the same structure and consisting of only main group elements. Using advanced density functional calculations, we demonstrate the attainability of these materials, and show that they cover a large range of lattice constants, band gaps and band edge states, therefore are good candidate materials for heterojunctions. This family of two dimensional materials may pave a way toward fabrication of 2DSC devices at the same thriving level as 3D semiconductors.

Abstract: Math6/atoh8, a bHLH transcription factor, is thought to be indispensable for early embryonic development and likely has important roles in vertebrate tissue-specific differentiation. However, the function of Atoh8 during early development is not clear because homozygous knockout causes embryonic lethality in mice. We have examined the effects of the atoh8 gene on the differentiation of retina and skeletal muscle during early development in zebrafish.
The Psychosocial Research of the Members in a Large Von Hippel-Lindau Family in China  [PDF]

Abstract: Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease is a rare, autosomal inherited tumor disorder caused by mutations or deletions of the VHL gene. Most of the previous research focused on the clinical features and molecular mechanisms of the disease, few concerned about the psychosocial impact on the patients and their family. We encountered a VHL family in the clinical work and attempted to assess the possible psychological effects of the disease on the members of the family. Three questionnaires including Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) and Revised Symptom Checklist (SCL-90-R) were used in the research. A total of 61 members participated in the investigation. The SAS and SDS tests showed that 13 members were affected by anxiety which was associated with age, and 19 members suffered from depression which was correlated with gender, marital status, age, being patients, occupation, education and close relative of the VHL patients. The SCL-90 results showed that the “total scores”, “interpersonal sensitivity”, “depression”, “anxiety” and “panic” scored higher in our study than Chinese average level. Meanwhile, the SCL-90 data revealed that: 1) age was associated with anxiety disorder; 2) marital status was related to higher prevalence of hostility; 3) Being VHL patients was related to bigoted symptoms; and 4) closer relationship with the VHL patients was associated with depressive and hostility symptoms in the family. The study revealed that susceptibility to psychiatric symptoms was correlated with certain sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. Depression and anxiety were the most prevalent psychiatric symptoms in the VHL family. This was the first study focusing on the psychological consequences of the VHL disease. An understanding of these factors would be helpful in providing appropriate mental health services to the VHL family.
Application of ICHD-II Criteria in a Headache Clinic of China

Abstract: Background China has the huge map and the largest population in the world. Previous studies on the prevalence and classification of headaches were conducted based on the general population, however, similar studies among the Chinese outpatient population are scarce. This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of 1843 headache patients enrolled in a North China headache clinic of the General Hospital for Chinese People's Liberation Army from October 2011 to May 2012, with the International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd Edition (ICHD-II). Methods and Results Personal interviews were carried out and a detailed questionnaire was used to collect medical records including age, sex and headache characteristics. Patients came from 28 regions of China with the median age of 40.9 (9–80) years and the female/male ratio of 1.67/1. The primary headaches (78.4%) were classified as the following: migraine (39.1%), tension-type headache (32.5%), trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias (5.3%) and other primary headache (1.5%). Among the rest patients, 12.9% were secondary headaches, 5.9% were cranial neuralgias and 2.5% were unspecified or not elsewhere classified. Fourteen point nine percent (275/1843) were given an additional diagnosis of chronic daily headache, including medication-overuse headache (MOH, 49.5%), chronic tension-type headache (CTTH, 32.7%) and chronic migraine (CM, 13.5%). The visual analogue scale (VAS) score of TTH with MOH was significantly higher than that of CTTH (6.8±2.0 vs 5.6±2.0, P<0.001). The similar result was also observed in VAS score between migraine with MOH and CM (8.0±1.5 vs 7.0±1.5, P = 0.004). The peak age at onset of TTH for male and female were both in the 3rd decade of life. However, the age distribution at onset of migraine shows an obvious sex difference, i.e. the 2nd decade for females and the 1st decade for males. Conclusions/Significance This study revealed the characteristics of the headache clinic outpatients in a tertiary hospital of North China that migraine is the most common diagnosis. Furthermore, most headaches in this patient population can be classified using ICHD-II criteria.

Abstract: Effects of 50mg·L-1 Zn2+ with increased on acidity Ceratophyllum demersum L were studied. The results showed that the contents of free proline, O2, MDA and permeability of cell membrane increased while chlorophyll contents decreased with decrease of pH value. POD was induced significantly by low pH value and CAT activity decreased evidently when pH value was less than 3.5. Accumulation of Zn by Ceratophyllum demersum L was the highest at pH5.5 and decreased with increase of acidity,indicating that the direct reason of increase Zn toxicity on Ceratophyllum demersum L was the Zn ionization's enhancement induced by acidity increase.

Abstract:

Objective: To discuss the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) by analyzing 4 cases of our center and 26 cases reported by others in our country. Methods: We analyzed the clinical feature, diagnosis and treatment of 4 CPM cases and then compared them with 26 CPM cases reported between 2000 and 2010. Results: The average age of our 4 cases (3 men and 1 woman) was 47.5 years old. All cases were diagnosed by MRI scan. The patients all had been diagnosed as liver cirrhosis and most of the CPM related symptoms were observed within 2 weeks after surgery, including neural and psychic symptoms and physical impairment. Rapid correction of hyponatremia during perioperative period and high blood concentration of FK506 may be the main causes. All cases received etiological and symptomatic combination treatment and were continued with neural function training after hospital discharge. A long-term follow-up (29.5 ± 15.0 months) showed an improvement of neural function to different degrees. Conclusion: CPM after liver transplantation is a severe complication, of which the etiology and pathogenesis were not clear. MRI scan is the main method for confirmative diagnosis. Etiological prevention and timely treatment may improve the prognosis.

Abstract: 摘要: 以花生壳为原材料,通过水热炭化法在200 ℃下以不同的水热裂解时间(1 h、5 h、10 h)制备出水热炭,开展去除水中Cr(Ⅵ)的实验研究。通过水热炭样品红外光谱FTIR表征、元素含量分析、扫描电镜SEM表征等对比分析,表明水热炭化法可以制备出多孔的碳材料,且随着水热裂解时间的增加,水热炭的产率逐渐降低、芳香性逐渐增强、极性官能团逐渐减少,这些性质的改变会影响其吸附能力。通过批实验进行水热炭对水中Cr(Ⅵ)的吸附研究,结果表明准二级动力学模型适用于该吸附过程,热力学Freundlich模型可以更好地描述吸附等温线。由热力学参数计算可知,水热炭吸附Cr(Ⅵ)属于优惠吸附(容易进行)和自发性、物理吸附,且为吸热过程。实验结果表明随着花生壳水热裂解时间的增加,水热炭吸附Cr(Ⅵ)的能力逐渐增强。因此,水热炭可以作为经济型吸附剂应用于水污染修复,相关成果对于综合利用农业废弃物具有重要实践价值。
Abstract: The agricultural wastes of peanut shells were used as carbonaceous material precursors, which were heated under the hydrothermal temperature of 200 ℃ and kept for the desired time duration of 1 h, 5 h or 10 h to prepare the hydrochars for the removal of Cr(Ⅵ) from aqueous solution. According to FTIR spectrum, elemental analysis and SEM characterization of hydrochar samples, the results showed that hydrothermal carbonization method is feasible for porous carbonbased hydrochars, and the aromaticity increases with hydrothermal time, while the yield and the polar functional groups decrease.These properties would affect the adsorption performance of hydrochars. The batch experiments showed that the adsorption kinetics of Cr(Ⅵ) on hydrochars followed the pseudosecondorder model and the Freundlich model well fitted the isothermal adsorption. According to thermodynamic study, such sorption behavior belongs to a preferential easy process, which is also a spontaneous, endothermic and physical adsorption. The adsorption capacity of Cr(Ⅵ) on hydrochars were enhanced with the hydrothermal time on biomass of peanut shells. Therefore, hydrochars could be applied as an economic adsorbent in water remediation. The present study could also provide an important practical value for the comprehensive utilization of agricultural wastes
Discovery of WTTS candidates in high-galactic latitude translucent molecular clouds

Abstract: The results of the survey of low-mass star formation in high-galactic latitude molecular clouds, especially those of the translucent category, based on the ROSAT All-Sky Survey are presented. Six new WTTS candidates have been discovered at high-galactic latitude, among which, two are found to be possibly associated with translucent molecular clouds MBM 19 and MBM 51 for projecting onto the vicinity or inner region of corresponding clouds. Further study on the 2 Li-rich X-ray active sources is needed to resolve the possibility of star formation in translucent molecular clouds.
