Synthesis of self-assembled needle-shaped calcium carbonate superstructures

Abstract: Novel self-assembled calcium carbonate (CaCO3) crystals exhibiting the morphology of well-defined needles were synthesized by a simple precipitation reaction in the presence of octadecyl dihydrogen phosphate (ODP) as a crystal additive. The CaCO3 obtained by this method is hydrophobic, making it likely to be used widely in industry. The resulting products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and contact angle experiments. The results indicated that ODP plays an important role in determining the structure, morphology and hydrophobicity of CaCO3 crystals.
Affecting Factors of the Competitive Sports’ Regional Differences in China  [PDF]

Abstract: National game is the highest level of comprehensive sports games in China which is competed by each province (city and autonomous region) as unitary units. As the imbalance of economy and population among different provinces (cities and autonomous regions), there are imbalance of competitive sports developments. Breaking through the traditional mode of regarding provinces (cities or autonomous regions) as the units for comparison and analysis, this research adopts the approach of comparing six regions in administrative districts and defining seven indicators as factors influencing Chinese regional competitive sports developments. Through the way of linear regression, this essay gradually chooses the factors which exert effects on Chinese competitive sports’ regional differences. It is found that competitive strength, economical strength, in-team player, reserve player and on-the-job coach are the principal factors affecting Chinese competitive sports’ regional differences. Meanwhile, the essay tends to provide references for balance development between regions on China by establishing regression equation MS = 1.601 + 1.159 × XS3 + 0.300 × XS1 + 0.2497 × XS4 + 0.189 × XS5 + 0.181 × XS6 of Chinese competitive sports’ regional differences.

Abstract: Keggin-type phenylimido-polyoxometalates α-[PM12O39NPh]3 (M = W and Mo) have been systematically investigated on the electronic structures, redox as well as nonlinear optical (NLO) properties by density functional theory (DFT). The strong M≡N bond confirmed by natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis comprises one s bond and two π bonds, the same as Mo≡N in [Mo6O18NPh]2 . Furthermore, phenylimido segment effectively modifies the electronic properties of α-[PM12O39NPh]3 . On one hand, when enlarging the inorganic cluster from {Mo6O18} to {PMo12O39}, the energy gap between HOMO and LUMO in α-[PMo12O39NPh]3 decreased, resulting in enormously anodic shift for the reduction potential, while the excitation energy is less and the total second-order polarizability β 0 is up to 438-3×10 30 esu, which is nearly 10 times larger than that of [Mo6O18NPh]2 . On the other hand, when metal W in α-[PM12O39NPh]3 is substituted by Mo, the interaction between Mo and N is enhanced and the redox ability becomes stronger. The β 0 value for α-[PMo12O39NPh]3 is more than 5 times higher than that of α-[PW12O39NPh]3 . It indicates that changing appropriate metal or enlarging the inorganic cluster will improve the redox properties and second-order nonlinear response. Moreover, the electron transition for three compounds mentioned above occurred mainly from organoimido segment (as the electron donor) to polyanion cluster (as the acceptor). As a result, α-[PMo12O39NPh]3 may be a promising candidate for oxidant and nonlinear optical material.

Circular Polymerase Extension Cloning of Complex Gene Libraries and Pathways

Abstract: High-throughput genomics and the emerging field of synthetic biology demand ever more convenient, economical, and efficient technologies to assemble and clone genes, gene libraries and synthetic pathways. Here, we describe the development of a novel and extremely simple cloning method, circular polymerase extension cloning (CPEC). This method uses a single polymerase to assemble and clone multiple inserts with any vector in a one-step reaction in vitro. No restriction digestion, ligation, or single-stranded homologous recombination is required. In this study, we elucidate the CPEC reaction mechanism and demonstrate its usage in demanding synthetic biology applications such as one-step assembly and cloning of complex combinatorial libraries and multi-component pathways.

Abstract: The biasing fluctuation model with a colored noise is presented to study the directional stepping motion of the molecular motor. The expression of probability current is obtained in the adiabatic approximation. The force-velocity relation and the stepping motion for motor are simulated by Monte-Carlo method.

Inner Product Similarity Search using Compositional Codes

Abstract: This paper addresses the nearest neighbor search problem under inner product similarity and introduces a compact code-based approach. The idea is to approximate a vector using the composition of several elements selected from a source dictionary and to represent this vector by a short code composed of the indices of the selected elements. The inner product between a query vector and a database vector is efficiently estimated from the query vector and the short code of the database vector. We show the superior performance of the proposed group $M$-selection algorithm that selects $M$ elements from $M$ source dictionaries for vector approximation in terms of search accuracy and efficiency for compact codes of the same length via theoretical and empirical analysis. Experimental results on large-scale datasets ($1M$ and $1B$ SIFT features, $1M$ linear models and Netflix) demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach.
A simplified method for analysis of polyunsaturated fatty acids

Abstract: We simplified the conventional method by combining the extraction and methylation into a single step (omitting the procedure of prior extraction). Various biological samples including cultured cells, animal tissues and human specimens have been tested using the new method. Statistical analysis indicates that the recovery of long chain fatty acids from tissue samples by the simplified method is significantly higher than that by the traditional method, but there is no difference in relative fatty acid composition between the two methods. This simplified method can significantly save time and materials, and reduce the potentials of sample loss and contamination.The lipid extraction procedure prior to methylation employed conventionally in lipid analysis can be omitted without affecting the recovery of long chain (≥ 18 C) fatty acids and their composition. The simplified method is rapid, easy-to-use, suitable for analysis of total long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid contents (e.g. n-6 and n-3 fatty acids) in various biological samples, especially when the number of samples to be analyzed is large and/or the specimen size is small.Fatty acid composition of cell membrane is an important determinant of cell function [1]. Manipulation of cellular fatty acid composition has been a widely used approach to modulating the biological responsiveness of different cell types. Recently, fatty acid profile, particularly the ratio of omega-6 (n-6) to omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids, of cells or tissues has become a biomarker for monitoring the outcome of dietary interventions (i.e., fatty acid supplementation) and for identifying the risk factors for lipid related diseases (e.g. cardiovascular disease) [2]. Abstract: 将CCD(电荷耦合器件)单元等效成一个变阻RC积分电路,使图像中的光照效应分解为对光电势的影响和对光敏电阻的影响。当tτ时认为光照强度只影响光电势。而对于不满足这一条件的光照强度进行调整,使非均匀照度图像中的低照度部分得以恢复,而正常照度部分和高光部分基本保持不变。将该模型应用于增强非均匀照度图像的常规算法之前,可收到较好的效果。
