The effects of an imperfect vaccine on cholera control  [PDF]

Abstract:

In this paper, we consider a SVIR-B cholera model with imperfect vaccination. By analyzing the corresponding characteristic equations, the local asymptotically stability of a disease-free equilibrium and an endemic equilibrium is established. We calculate the certain threshold known as the basic reproduction number Rv. If Rv < 1, we obtain sufficient conditions for the global asymptotically stability of the disease- free equilibrium, the diseases will be eliminated from the community. By comparison arguments, it is proved that if Rv > 1, the unique endemic equilibrium is local asymptotically stable. We perform sensitivity analysis of Rv on the parameters in order to determine their relative importance to disease control and show that an imperfect vaccine is always beneficial in reducing disease spread within the community.

Abstract: We consider a class of nonautonomous stochastic evolution equations in real separable Hilbert spaces. We establish a new composition theorem for square-mean almost automorphic functions under non-Lipschitz conditions. We apply this new composition theorem as well as intermediate space techniques, Krasnoselskii fixed point theorem, and Banach fixed point theorem to investigate the existence of square-mean almost automorphic mild solutions. Some known results are generalized and improved.

Abstract: In the cation of the title compound, C22H19N2+·NO3 , the N atom in the 3-position of the imidazole is protonated. The three pendant aromatic rings are twisted from the plane of the imadazolium ring by dihedral angles of 38.1 (1), 43.74 (9) and 20.4 (1)°. In the crystal structure, N—H...O and N—H...(O,O) hydrogen bonds link the molecules to form an infinite one-dimensional chain parallel to the c axis.

Abstract: In the title compound, C6H6N5+·NO3 , there are two different isomers of the cation within the asymmetric unit. The dihedral angles between the the pyridinium and tetrazole rings are 2.54 (15) and 13.36 (18)° in the two cations. In the crystal, the packing of ions is stabilized by N—H...O and N—H...(O,O) hydrogen bonds, forming clusters composed of four ion pairs.

Abstract: The title compound, [K(C6H4N5)(H2O)2]n, was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction of KOH with 4-(5-tetrazolio)pyridine. The K atom has a distorted octahedral coordination environment and is coordinated by two axial N atoms from the organic ligand and by four water molecules in the equatorial plane. The molecules as a whole are located on crystallographic mirror planes; the K atom is also located on an inversion center. Both the water molecules and the organic ligands act as bridges to link symmetrically the adjacent K atoms into polymeric chains parallel to the c axis. O—H...N hydrogen bonds involving the water O atoms and aromatic π–π interactions [centroid–centroid distance 3.80 (2) ] between the pyridine and tetrazole rings build up an infinite three-dimensional network.

Abstract: The title compound, C21H16N3O2+·Cl , contains two organic cations with similar conformation and two chloride ions in the asymmetric unit. The imidazole and benzene rings are twisted with respect to each other [dihedral angles of 24.05 (16), 24.31 (16) and 50.38 (13) in one cation and 27.70 (15), 25.07 (16) and 45.86 (14)° in the other]. The crystal packing is stabilized by N—H...Cl hydrogen bonds, forming an infinite one-dimensional chain parallel to the c axis.
Pathology of spleen in chickens fed on a diet deficient in methionine  [PDF]

Abstract: The purpose of this 42-day study was to investigate the effects of methionine deficiency on spleen by determining the relative weight, morphological changes of spleen, cell cycle and apoptosis of splenocytes, and oxidative markers of serum and spleen. One hundred and twenty one-day-old avian broilers were randomly divided into two groups and fed on a control diet (starter diet, methionine 0.50%; grower diet, methionine 0.40%) and methionine deficient diet (starter diet, methionine 0.26%; grower diet, methionine 0.28%) for 6 weeks. The relative weight of spleen was lighter in methionine deficiency than control group. Histopathologically, lymphopenia and congestion were observed. Ultrastructurally, there were more apoptosis lymphocytes in spleen and the mitochondria of lymphocytes were swelled in methionine deficiency. By flow cytometry, the G0/G1 phase of the cell cycle of the spleen was much higher (P < 0.01), and the S, G2+M phases and proliferating index were lower (P < 0.01) in methionine deficiency than in control group. And the percentage of apoptotic cells in the spleen was significantly increased in methionine deficiency (P < 0.01).The superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities, and abilities to inhibit hydroxyl radicals were greatly decreased while the malondialdehyde contents were markedly increased in methionine deficiency. It was concluded that methionine deficiency could restraine the development of the spleen by cell cycle arrest and increased apoptosis, cause splenic lesions and reduce splenic antioxidant function. The splenic function should be finally impaired and then the immune function could be impacted in chickens.

Abstract: The aims of this study were to clarify the effects of high vanadium on the renal cell cycle and apoptosis in broilers. 420 one-day-old avian broilers were divided into six groups and fed on a control diet (vanadium 0.073 mg/kg), and five high vanadium diets (vanadium 5 mg/kg, high vanadium group I; 15 mg/kg, high vanadium group II; 30 mg/kg, high vanadium group III; 45 mg/kg, high vanadium group IV; 60 mg/kg, high vanadium group V) throughout the experimental period of 42 days. As tested by flow cytometry, the percentage of apoptotic renal cells was increased in high vanadium group II, III, IV and V when compared with that of control group. The Proliferating index (PI) of renal cell and the ratio of S, G2 + M phase cells were markedly decreased and population of G0/G1 cells was increased in high vanadium group II, III, IV and V. The results showed that dietary vanadium in excess of 15 mg/kg was toxic to kidney by the renal cells cycle arrest and increased apoptosis, which caused the growth depression of the kidney in broilers.
