Extending Instrumental Variable Method for Effective Economic Modelling  [PDF]

Abstract: Economic modeling that yields practical value must cater for effects caused by exogenous variables. AutoRegressive eXogenous approach (ARX) has been widely used in regional economic studies. Instrumental Variable Method is regarded as a preferential method to parametric estimation in ARX modeling. However, traditional instrumental variable methods can only handle single variable which has limited its capability. This paper presents an extended instrumental variable method (EIVM) which is based on multiple variables. This provides the capability of taking into account of exogenous variables and reflects better the economic activities. A case study is conducted, which illustrates the application of the EIVM in modeling Northeastern economy in China.

Abstract: Objective: To explore the cognitive level and the mental status of the patients suffering from perimenopausal syndrome in Shanghai, and to identify the traditional Chinese medicine syndrome distribution feature of perimenopausal syndrome.Methods: The cognitive level of the perimenopausal women was evaluated by using general living problem questionnaire. The mental status of the perimenopausal women was evaluated by using self-rating depressive scale. The traditional Chinese medicine syndrome distribution feature of perimenopausal syndrome was identified by using traditional Chinese medical symptoms questionnaire.Results: A total of 634 perimenopausal women finished the investigation. There were 74.76% (474/634) patients who knew little about the perimenopausal syndrome; 77.29% (490/634) patients had a depressive tendency; 8.36% (53/634) patients had depressive disorder. There were 72.40% (459/634) patients who had the symptoms such as susceptibility to anger and restlessness, restless sleep at night, thirst with dry throat and bitter taste, and all these symptoms could be classified into hyperactivity of heart and liver fire syndrome.Conclusion: Patients suffering from perimenopausal syndrome know little about this disease and mostly have depressive tendency, and the major traditional Chinese medicine syndrome pattern is hyperactivity of heart and liver fire based on the chief clinical manifestations of the patients.
MEASURING SELF-ESTEEM OF DEAF/HARD OF HEARING COLLEGE STUDENTS

Abstract: This study examines Deaf/hard of hearing college students' implicit and explicit self-esteem, with thirty-six 18 to 21 year old (Age ± SD, 19.4±0.9) subjects. Following are the results of this study: Just as hearing students, Deaf/hard of hearing students also have significant implicit self-esteem effect; none of the observed correlations with explicit esteem is significant for either attributive IAT or the affective IAT; Implicit self-esteem of males is higher than that of females; No significant correlation exists between implicit self-esteem and the level of depression. Social comparisons and negative evaluations and attitudes of others always tend to damage explicit self-esteem of Deaf/hard of hearing students. However, positive self-attitude characterizations still exist in their self-schema.
Pseudo DNA Sequence Generation of Non-Coding Distributions Using Variant Maps on Cellular Automata  [PDF]

Abstract:

In a recent decade, many DNA sequencing projects are developed on cells, plants and animals over the world into huge DNA databases. Researchers notice that mammalian genomes encoding thousands of large noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), interact with chromatin regulatory complexes, and are thought to play a role in localizing these complexes to target loci across the genome. It is a challenge target using higher dimensional tools to organize various complex interactive properties as visual maps. In this paper, a Pseudo DNA Variant MapPDVM is proposed following Cellular Automata to represent multiple maps that use four Meta symbols as well as DNA or RNA representations. The system architecture of key components and the core mechanism on the PDVM are described. Key modules, equations and their I/O parameters are discussed. Applying the PDVM, two sets of real DNA sequences from both the sample human (noncoding DNA) and corn (coding DNA) genomes are collected in comparison with two sets of pseudo DNA sequences generated by a stream cipher HC-256 under different modes to show their intrinsic properties in higher levels of similar relationships among relevant DNA sequences on 2D maps. Sample 2D maps are listed and their characteristics are illustrated under a controllable environment. Various distributions can be observed on both noncoding and coding conditions from their symmetric properties on 2D maps.

Properties of glucoside 3-dehydrogenase and its potential applications

Abstract: Glucoside 3-dehydrogenase, one of the glucose redoxidases, is perhaps known for the vital role it plays in converting a series of sugars to their corresponding 3-ketoglucosides. Glucoside 3-dehydrogenase has attracted considerable attention in recent years due to broad substrate specificity and excellent regioselectivity. Glucoside 3-dehydrogenase is a FAD-enzyme, which is capable of oxidizing glucosides and galactosides to their corresponding 3-ketoglycosides, due to the enzyme’s site-selective oxidation of the C-3 hydroxyl group. These 3-ketoglucosides are useful as building blocks for chemicals such as detergents and polymers. The versatile glucoside 3-dehydrogenase has potential applications in different fields including sugar industry, clinical diagnosis and pharmaceutical intermediates synthesis. This review attempts to describe the glucoside 3-dehydrogenase concerning the sources, properties and applications in detail.
Modeling the Implied Volatility Surface-: A Study for S&P 500 Index Option

Abstract: The aim of this study is to demonstrate a framework to model the implied volatilities of S&P 500 index options and estimate the implied volatilities of stock prices using stochastic processes. In this paper, three models are established to estimate whether the implied volatilities are constant during the whole life of options. We mainly concentrate on the Black-Scholes and Dumas’ option models and make the empirical comparisons. By observing the daily-recorded data of S&P 500 index, we study the volatility model and volatility surface. Results from numerical experiments show that the stochastic volatilities are determined by moneyness rather than constant. Our research is of vital importance, especially for forecasting stock market shocks and crises, as one of the applications.
Stochastic Modeling and Estimation of Market Volatilities with Applications in Financial Forecasting

Abstract: This paper aims to provide a framework for modeling and estimating the implied volatilities of stock prices using stochastic processes. The CIR (Cox-Ingersoll-Ross) model is proposed to capture the mean reversion characteristic as shown in the movement of the daily implied volatilities of the S$&$P 500 Index and Nikkei 225 Index. The maximum likelihood procedure is applied to estimate the parameters appearing in the model, where both analytical and approximation techniques are sought to handle the difficulties arising from the corresponding optimization problem. The procedure is validated with varying sampling methods by setting different time horizons and observation intervals. Results from numerical experiments show that the stochastic volatility model proposed in this paper functions well in both the US and Japan markets. As one of the applications, our approach is tested to be effective in detecting jumps in likelihood ratios, hence useful for forecasting stock market shocks and crisis.

Abstract: By converting waste heat into electricity through the thermoelectric power of solids without producing greenhouse gas emissions, thermoelectric generators could be an important part of the solution to today's energy challenge. There has been a resurgence in the search for new materials for advanced thermoelectric energy conversion applications. In this paper, we will review recent efforts on improving thermoelectric efficiency. Particularly, several novel proof-of-principle approaches such as phonon disorder in phonon-glasselectron crystals, low dimensionality in nanostructured materials and charge-spin-orbital degeneracy in strongly correlated systems on thermoelectric performance will be discussed.

Abstract: Ontology as an important representation model of semantic web has valuable application. A new ontology model on the basis of Computer Graphics (CG) knowledge is proposed, called CG ontology model. The protégé is used to build this ontology model conveniently. The Jena API is applied to store CG owl documents in MySQL, set inference rule and achieve search queries on the ontology database. Finally, the Jena-based ontology model retrieval system is developed.
